The Seahawks will sign former Ball State QB Nate Davis to their "futures" 2011 active squad according to Matt Maiocco of Comcast Sportsnet SF. Most recently, Davis was a favorite of 49ers fans who looked at him as the answer to Alex Smith's stinkdom. That never panned out around the Bay, but who knows what will happen in Seattle.
Here is the link.
[In an article written last July, Maiocco spoke to Dave Razzano, a former scout for the 49ers, Rams, and Cardinals. The bulk of the article is about Alex Smith (Razzano was fired from the Rams for rating Smith as a "non-starting" caliber draft prospect -- turns out he was ever so slightly right about that), but Razzano also lavishes praise on Nate Davis:
"When I evaluated him, I thought he was the same guy as Mark Sanchez," Razzano said. "I thought they were very similar. But you have to put a guy on the field and let him play. There's a reason Ball State was, like, 12-1 or 13-1 for the first time ever. And now they're back to winning two games. That guy was a heck of a quarterback.
"They might say, 'He doesn't learn this or that.' If they just handed him the keys, that's their answer. He'll make mistakes, but he won't make the same mistake twice. This kid made every throw imaginable. It wasn't a short-passing game (at Ball State). There would be guys in his face and he'd roll out, man, he hit guys on a 30-yard freakin' strike between defenders. The kid was unbelievable. I knew he'd fall (in the draft) because in the spring all that garbage comes in."
If Razzano's evaluation is reliable, then Seattle may very well have just found themselves a legitimate franchise QB prospect to compete with Whitehurst to be Hasselbeck's heir apparent. --Ed.]
Sluggo- Thanks! Glad to see not everyone was scared off by change!
MatthewHuett--Thanks for the awesome and timely reply to my comment. I bet there was a little more to Razzano being canned than simply making a negative assessment of someone his team didnt even draft. He sounds a little confrontational. But maybe the Hawks should give the guy a look if he agrees with McCloughan on stuff..
S_TTBM - Nope, I mean the Rams canned him. From the article:
He got fired after more than a decade as a Rams scout four years ago in large part because of his defense of a critical pre-draft evaluation of quarterback Alex Smith, Razzano told Comcast SportsNet.
"I had him rated as a non-starting player," Razzano said of Smith, whom the 49ers selected with the top overall pick in the 2005 draft.
Even as Smith enters his sixth professional season, 49ers followers are divided on Smith's ability to be a successful NFL quarterback. Smith has said he realizes he will not be able to win over all of his naysayers. And when it comes to those critics, Razzano is at the front of the line.
"I thought he was way over-drafted and way overrated," Razzano said. "I don't think I've been proven wrong. The guy hasn't done it, and he'll get another opportunity. He's getting a little better with the touchdown throws to Vernon Davis. But, boy, the guy I saw at Utah, I was shocked people had him rated that high."
Razzano said then-Rams general manager Charlie Armey asked him to change his grade on Smith to conform with the higher grades others in the Rams' draft room had assigned Smith. The scene escalated into an ugly shouting match. Razzano said he refused to alter his evaluation of Smith. It was the beginning of the end with the Rams for Razzano, he said. He was fired after the 2006 draft (Armey did not immediately respond to CSNBayArea.com's call.
A great pickup. Doesnt mean we wont draft a qb, but it means we have someone with more upside than Losman. And he's young, which is good. Heck, it doesnt even mean Seattle wont bring in a vet--like Kolb or VY--just that they are making sure they have a young, developable qb on the roster next year.
Why would the Rams fire the scout for downgrading Alex Smith?! Do you mean the Niners canned him?
Check out the link where he throws the 65 yard bomb to
Ted Ginn. They have Singletary MIC'd. I can see why some
players did not 'Buy in' to his system. He kinna sounds like
a jerkoff in the clip.
Collinsworth's quote is friggen hillarious though.
Great point Ross, and right on point. Who knows what this kid can offer? He has insane physical tools, but can he learn the NFL game?
Was his main problem Singletardy?
Kentwan Balmer has been a solid player that didn't work out for the 49ers. Perhaps this kid can too.
Whether or not he does, the fact that the F.O. picked him up is just anoth example of the relentless nature of the work ethic that the front office adheres to. If there is a talent available out there, I think we can rest assured that he will be assessed by our guys, and who knows?
It is so nice to be a fan of a team whose front office doesn't rest. This is the type of move that good organizations make. Who knows how this will work out but no stone is left unturned in pursuit of talent.
The reason he is dumb as a box of rocks is because
he's got a learning disability......... All the dude needs
is a little direction. He's 23 for EFFs sake.
I think this is a perfect project for PC. All of the talent
and a need for a little direction.
I wasn't all that impressed with Nate Davis, he looked good on a couple longballs. Maybe Carrol is bringing him in to push CW or Losman. Anyways he looks like a cheap project. CW was looking pretty good at times with the longball too. How old is he? the new kid i mean.
Housh like always needs to shut his mouth and perform on the field. I can't believe that there was a time I was excited about him coming to the Seahawks. Now, he is one of my least respected players in the league.
You would think he would actually stop bitching until he actually proved something on the field of play!
great pickup. Since it does not look like we will use our 31st pick on a QB, I wanna see pete go after Vince Young.
This guy isn't a Seneca Wallace type. Wallace couldn't toss
the ball 65 yards down the field with no effort. Davis is a starting
QB type. I've been checking in on this guy since he came out of
the draft. This is a great addition.
All I got is preseason but I see a TON of upside.
If he's taking the place of Losman, I guess active. But was Losman even active? If it comes down to the 3rd string QB we're screwed anyway but maybe he can end up in the backfield or split wide for a trick play or 2 a la Seneca Wallace
