ESPN's Mike Sando checked in with Seahawks coach Pete Carroll during today's OTAs at Renton, and the brief exchange offered some interesting insight into how things are developing at the VMAC. A few key points:

  • DE Chris Clemons has excelled in pass rush drills so far, making his acquisition in the Daryl Tapp trade appear favorable. Carroll seems very high on the former Eagle so far: "Chris Clemons has really improved a lot. I think that was a very good move for us. Chris has shown terrific speed. He is really into what we are doing. He is a disciplined football player. I really like him at the spot we are playing him. So far, that has gone well. We are hoping Aaron Curry on the other side will give us two guys who can go into Qwest (Field) and light it up on the edge. There won't be many teams faster than those two guys off the edge."
  • It's beginning to seem like Deon Butler could emerge as a viable Deion "I Have Glass Knees" Branch replacement. Grossly misused last year on simple breakaway routes, Butler has been wowing the coaching staff. Carroll:
"Deon Butler has probably made more progress than anybody since we've got off the film that we looked at last year. He is more disciplined about his route running. We know he is really fast. He has been a consistent catcher. He needs to be physical. As a smaller guy, he needs to stay on his feet and not get knocked around by defensive backs. But he is in it, running a lot with the first groups, so we're getting a very good look at him right now."
  • Surprisingly, JP Losman has been "throwing with authority," according to Sando. He's clearly more developed than Mike Teel, but the upside argument could easily be made in that comparison. In fact, it's probably not even fair to compare them at this stage, since Losman has a few years of experience under his belt; some of which as a starter. Teel has yet to throw an NFL pass. But however you slice it, Losman looks impressive for a third-string QB so far.
OTAs have gone very smoothly for the Hawks so far, but I'd have liked to hear more on how Whitehurst is throwing, and how Okung and Hamilton have been working together on improving the offensive line. We'll see how that story unfolds in the coming months.
