ESPN is reporting that last year's trade acquisition Cory Redding has moved on to greener pastures, signing with the stout Baltimore defense where he will likely play defensive end. It's a two year deal in Baltimore.

So far, the three people I remember Carroll stating he was excited about were Darryl Tapp, Cory Redding, and Matt Hasselbeck (and Aaron Curry, but we can be sure he won't be traded). Two of those three are now members of other NFL squads, and Hasselbeck has a heated competition on his hands come July. The new regime will continue pulling the bandaids off as quickly as they can, folks.

The fact is, the Hawks are a team that is "rebuilding."

I sure hope they field a full roster this year. They currently have what... 20 players under contract? I would fully expect to see more trades between now and the draft to stockpile picks, and then to see multiple trade-downs to get more picks during the draft. I don't think Carroll & Schieder are just altering the roster, they are turning it upside down.

Carroll wants to go young, and Redding is old (for a football player). Obviously Redding does not fit into the team's new vision, whatever that is.

Can't wait for the draft.

...bout nuthin,..none of these guys were so incredible that we just couldnt live without them. Outside of Unger and our kickers,...I cant name a single other player that stepped up last year. If they didnt step up im glad to be seeing them, " STEP OUT ". That said, he ( Redding ) seemed like a good guy and I wish him the best in the AFC. CLEAN HOUSE!

Redding wasn't given a tender. Spencer, Sims, Tapp, Obamanu and Hawthorne were the only players given tenders. So, we didn't get anything for Redding. Bummer. We've got some serious holes to fill!

Redding was an unrestricted free agent, so he couldn't be tendered. Only restricted free agents can be tendered.

I don't mind rebuilding in the nfc west. Our whole division is. Sometimes you bring in a free agent just to build momentum and entice other players to go there too. Thanks for the answer guys, i wasn't sure if he was restricted or not.

Well, Peterson might not make the Lions this year either - same issue with being overpaid relative to production and not willing to take a pay cut.

If we'd resigned Redding, it would have to be to start, since there should have been some leaguewide interest in him to starter, especially for a 3-4 team looking for a stopgap. And it wouldn't make sense to keep him then if he was going to take developmental time away from Jackson. I think many of those who wanted to keep him wanted to move him back to DT, but there must be some reason he hasn't played there for years.

Or maybe we're trying to stockpile compensatory picks for next year?

I don't think they are going to trade down and lose on the number of picks we have. We need more picks, not less. At the rate we are losing people...even role players....I hope they have a plan to get a bunch more. T.J. has a good question...how many do we have under contract as of today?

Whats up with you guys thinking we have lost so many players.
Remember we have lost Tapp (Jacksons backup under two regimes), Burleson (starter), Redding (Rotation), and we lost Laury a special team player. Wallace was an average backup
That is 5 players that we so far have lost out of a 53 man roster and only one was a starter. 2 others were in rotation and the other was only in about 10 plays a game. The last played 1-2 plays accept the games hass was injured

We have signed a LB to take Laury's spot. We aquired a Role playing DE/LB when we lost Tapp. We signed a RB for competition, We signed a Big WR likely 4th or 5th option but will be on the team. We signed a QB that could be better than Wallace. And we got a TE that will be in over half of our offensive snaps.

We have lost 5 and aquired 6. And one that we aquired may be our future starting QB.
...
written by Jon B, March 22, 2010
out of our 53 man roster 17 were originally FA whether that be RFA or UFA including Grant. So we started this FA period with 36 Players under contract plus whoever we signed from our practice squad so that no one else could take them. Since then we have signed 6 players to our team. this makes at least 42 players under contract. 12 free agents that were on our team last year that have not signed with any team.
This makes a potential of up to 54 players if we only resign those who were on our team last year. After that we have 8 picks in this years draft. That makes 62 players and last year we signed something like 14 undrafted free agents to compete for jobs.
This means that by the time of our Training camp we could easily have 75-80 players on the team and that is without even streching anything.
The FO knows what they are doing, just calm down.

Ya i was over at FieldGulls to see what their Brass was saying about the move and it was like we lost a Pro Bowl Caliber Player. The funny thing about these players guys is we are losing starters in Burly, Tapp, Redding to teams who are using them as their backups. Does this make sense as to what the league views are players as? The only one who is going to hurt is Burly. Him with Calvin Johnson will be a very nice 1-2 punch

...
written by Jon B, March 22, 2010
Burly will hurt, only if we don't pick up Marshal or a top 5 WR in this draft class. 5 WR's in this draft who would pick up were Burly left off or better are as follows.
Dez Bryant, Golden Tate, Brandon Lafell, Arelious Benn, and Damian Williams. They all have more up side than Burly as he is going to be like 29. And they would be about equal to him this year IMO.

And remember neither Tapp or Redding are our starters. I would have liked Tapp versus Kerney, but Jackson beat out Tapp for the Starting position year one under Holmy, and then again started the majority of the games under Mora last year. Redding only started like 2 games this season.

Burly is the only one that we have lost this Off season that was #1 at his position in the depth chart last year.
Dont forget the DE kid

from the canadian league. We also lost grant as a starter.

Agree, none of these losses, are really losses. Consider the point above, our starters are going to other teams as BU players. ha

Re: FieldGulls, I read something there about the Holmgren drafts and Ruskell drafts and how holmgren netted few too many starters, while many Ruskell players made starters, hence Ruskell>Holmgren on draft success.

Whoa, I won't debate Ruskell vs. Holmgren's draft. But I would debate considering how many starters are made from a draft solely on that is extremely flawed. When you net a bunch of starters, who are below average on a team who can't break .500 2 years running; your drafting and players suck!

the seahawks run d was in the top half last year, I think that was one of the reasons they kept bradly, but I am wondering why some folks are content with loosing some decent players( with more holes to fill now)and not enough draft picks and no options in fa, means 2 more, or 3 more years in the "rebuilding"mode which SUCKS. Having some older players in fa is better than waiting until the bottom of the barrel cuts that teams will make towards thhe begining of the season.I dont understand some of these moves.

Teams loose players in FA every year what is the big deal. The run D was in the top half, and guess who the starters were in that D. Jackson, Cole, Mebane, and Kerney.

Redding and Tapp were not starters. I don't like loosing them either, but get over it and stop treating them like starters when they were not. I
I truly do with we still had Tapp over Kerney because of potential and future. But we don't.
Redding had a big 20 tackles and 2 sacks in 15 games played. Wow big loss. We can't improve if our FO covets backups.

They don't have to be starters to be valuable. Defensive linemen rotate in and out constantly. Further, I would much rather have some of these guys as depth than a 7th round draft pick or a undrafted free agent. At least bring a guy like Redding back to compete for a roster spot. I just think that if we have serviceable guys, we shouldn't let them walk without a back-up plan, which the FO may have...I just can't see it yet. I'm not freaking out. I'm just concerned. Hopefully we see everthing come together on April 22nd-24th.

I realize some people are "concerned" but why be concerned about this? We've gained some good back ups that are younger and ready to compete for the starting position or the back up role. Let all the dust settle before you become concerned. Theres a month to go before the draft, lots of moves could be made. Not to mention the draft itself. What if we move down and pick up more picks?

Buy making these very same type moves. Special teams was their biggest turn around that year. Both in players and progress/success on the field.

This FO knows what they are doing and have a good plan, I think. Expect to see more change and don't be suprised if they are bigger names.
Balanced Attack?
written by Hawkstrap, March 22, 2010
A good NFL team has balance. Unfortunately for the Hawks they seems be trying find balance by reducing their defensive roster to match the offense's lack of play makers. If we're rebuilding, how come we're emptying our defensive roster without picking anybody up? It's not like we have that many draft picks.

Look guys this is crazy. You are treating Redding like he is a beast. Well here you go.
Nick Reed is good! He had 17 tackles and 1 Sack in very limited play time.
Redding had 20 tackles and two sacks as a main part of the dl rotation. This is not a huge loss, and definitely is not something that is irreplaceable.
Tapp is different, 50+ tackles and like 20 QB hits. That is great but a QB hit is not a real stat for a reason. He is a loss, but can be replaced. For those who don't think so he was chosen at #63 in a lesser draft than this year. We currently have 3 picks before #63.

Next years FA class will be very good because of the after effects of all the extra restricted free agents (many of them will only sign for 1 year and be unrestricted next year) from this year.

Losing Redding isnt a disaster, but it isnt good either. I would have liked to see what he could do at DT, especially on passing downs. He had potential. That said, he wasnt great last year and I bet he got more money from Baltimore than we were willing to pay him. He had his shot here, he didnt stand out, now he's gone. At least for his sake, he now gets to play on a team that will go to the playoffs. A long ways from the Lions two years ago...

I wish we had kept him. Oh well. And this isnt a very good year for defensive ends in the draft either. Lets all hope Reed is a beast, Kerney can get some of his speed back, and that Canadian dude Ricky Whatever plays well too. Jackson is fine versus the run, and he had flashes rushing the passer too.
