Per Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, the Detroit Lions are strongly considering trading the Seahawks for guard Rob Sims. Earlier in the week we heard that Chicago was in the mix. This goes to prove that Sims is a great interior guard and that a 4th round pick is a great deal for teams needing that interior lineman. Alex Gibbs' zone blocking scheme just isn't a fit for Sims.

How does Detroit and Chicago being interested in Sims mean he is a great guard available for a great deal?
Sims has ben proven
written by Steve from Seahawk Addicts, March 31, 2010
Adi, Sims proved himself over the years with the Hawks. Yeah he has had multiple injuries but he is a great guard. He just isn't a fit for Alex Gibbs' zone blocking scheme. When teams select a 4th round guard, that guard may not be ready to play right away. Sims would be traded to a team for a 4th round pick and that team who selected him would know 100% that he is ready to play on day 1.

Watching Sims whiff on so many plays even last year, his best in Seattle, I think calling him "great" is quite a stretch. Still, a fourth round pick for a solid five-year veteran seems to be a bargain.

Seattle made the mistake of tendering him at the level they felt teams would be readily willing to pay for Sims. The problem with that is that in the NFL, teams are notoriously cheap and unwilling to trade value for value-everyone wants a steal. And so since the Hawks are asking for a fourth, everyone is offering lesser players or fifth round picks on down.

Kind of like selling a used vehicle. Studies prove the best way to sell a car is to ask at least $500 more than you want for the car. The studies show that people feel like they got a good deal (even if they didnt) when they talked the price down that much. Funny thing is, people didnt feel like they had gotten as good a deal (even if they had) if the seller asked a lower price, but refused to negotiate.

That same psychology may have something to do with the trading practices in the NFL. Personally, I think its obvious that Schneider and Caroll have a lot to learn about trading and negotiating in the NFL. Their track record thus far isnt too hot. They are bumbling, giving players up for less than fair compensation, while paying too much salary and giving up more than they have to for players they want.

Whether or not Sims fits their scheme, he's a decent G at this point, with still more potential in a power/man blocking scheme, and as such should be a steal for any team for a fourth rounder. I hope Seattle hasnt tipped thier hand too much as I'd hate to lose Sims for anything less.

Get rid of that mother and pick up Smilie

I wonder what would happen if a team ended up signing Sims to a offer sheet. Say the Lions do and that means we would get at least pick #100 for him.
If another team really wants him but they were waiting to see if they could drive the price down because of a lack of interest then we now have the upper hand. If the Browns were that team and they are one of them, they may end up giving us #92 which is one of the 3 3rd round picks that the Browns have.
Then we tell the Lions that they need to up the anti or we will sign and trade to the Browns. I know this is only 8 places in the middle of the draft but the options from their get interesting.

1) The Lions could offer this years third to beat out any hope for the Browns to take him. This gives us Pick #66.

2) The Lions offer the fourth that they were going to give us and next years 3rd or fourth.

3) The Lions do not accept any other trade options and we end up with the #92 pick from the browns.

Sims and our #6 for Detroit's #2
Our choice - Suh or McCoy

Spiller at #14
...
written by Jon B, March 31, 2010
Wow mek,
that is how you get let down (Don't dream to big). It would be insane if that did happen but that would just be rediculous. That is like 1000 points on the trade chart. I really doubt that happens that is like saying that Sims is a mid first round level talent.

Just looking at what we could do if it did happen though since it was brought up.

1) We could take our choice of Suh or Mccoy.

2) We could act as though we are going to draft Clausen forcing a team to trade up, maybe the Redskins. If they did bite we would get a 2nd round pick for it and we would still be in position to take Suh or Mccoy. (whoever falls past the Bucs.)

nope not gonna happen but good thought.

The difference between #2 & 6 is equivallent to three rounds?
...
written by CDAseahawk, March 31, 2010
Based on his previous performance, contrary to most opinions out there, a 5th round for Sims would be a good deal for seattle. Sims sucks, injury prone and even when healthy was not good. They need to take whatever they can get but interest from multiple teams could allow them some room to work.

Sims for Smiley!
...
written by S.TTBM, March 31, 2010
Yeah, I wonder what the heck happened with John Smiley being traded here? Are the Dolphins trying to trade for Sims as well, or are they trying for a draft pick or two? Maybe Miami wants more than a fourth for Smiley, and Seattle is trying to get what Miami wants in trade for Sims.

Smiley is a definite upgrade to Sims, IF he can stay healthy. Sims was healthy last year for the first time in years.
Is Detroit becoming Seattle East?

1.Chuck Darby
2.Will Heller
3.Julian Petersen
4.Mo Morris
5.Nate Burleson
6.Rob Sims?

Why?
what about keeping Sims?
written by TheRealist, March 31, 2010
I think you could make the case he was the best player on the OL last year, and when he has played well, he has shown to be pretty talented.

The "he doesnt fit the scheme" argument is ok, but i feel like that is why leonard weaver is an eagle now. The NFL network now refers to weaver as the best fullback in the NFL. Makes me sick every time. I think we all wish we still had weaver. OL is different from fullback i know, but i do feel like sims is a pretty good player

Funny how almost no one noticed Weaver as a Hawk, but he spends one year on the East Coast, and suddenly he's the best FB in the NFL. While he is, he was that two years ago in Seattle.

I thought Sims was at worst our second best lineman last year, and as such deserved to be kept. Its that idiot Spencer whom I wish would just retire or leave. I cannot beleive my worst nightmare (other than the return of Ruskell/Mora) may be coming true: Sims traded, Spencer at C, Unger back at RG. Ugh!

Penn State--Because those Hawks are far better than the players they replaced, thats why. And most of them (excluding Nate) are bargain-priced.

You beat me to it Penn State Hawk. I also find it funny that Detroit is getting a bunch of ex-hawks.
Smiley
written by IdahoSeahawksFan, March 31, 2010
I have been looking around for some more news on Smiley and can't find anything. I wonder if Carroll would rather get a young OL for the 4th round instead of getting someone like Smiley who is getting older and has had injury problems.

It really makes me angry that we lost Weaver due to Ruskells bitterness towards Holmgren (and what did he have to be bitter about--he got his way and gave Holmy the bums rush!? He didnt have to dump EVERY Holmgrenite), and Knapps retarded antiquated offensive scheme. We lost a Pro Bowl FB with amazing athletic ability, as well as perhaps the nicest guy on the team. All for one year of the worst NFL offense since Tom Flores. Way to go, Timmay! and Jimmay!

Well, at least we can watch Church Van in the playoffs...I sure hope he stops referring to himself as "The Weave" though, thats barftastic.

written by Omar Little, March 31, 2010
I don't get why everyone is making such a big deal about Weaver. Hes a fullback! Its not like he was going to take us to the SB or even win more games for us.

I liked him a lot too, but lets be realistic here.
Both picks OL
written by Jrock, March 31, 2010
Am I the only one that wouldn't mind seeing us use both first rounders on the OL, unless we can get one of the big 2 DT's somehow (proll not). I would much rather see pick 14 go Trent Williams rather than Spiller. We don't need Spiller. maybe I'm blind but i thought Justin Forsett averaged 5.4 yards per carry with an almost non existant line and a mediocre passing game. Give the kid a chance, He has never done anything but kill it and people still won't give him props

rating the trades
written by howaboutthat, March 31, 2010
im not going to go into the details of most of the trades but to hear so many people just go off on the fo for most of them is prompting me too respond
there are several aspects to any and every trade and every season has different dynamics.its disapointing that some long time posters cant grasp some of these aspects in play.
the first thing is we were a 4 and 12 team and a 5 and 11 seasons team.that means that the majority of players sucked.castigate the coaching or the previous regimes but the talent level on this team is piss-poor.so expecting great returns is a little myopic,no?
because this is an uncapped year its very poor in quality while everyone thought teams would spend wildly they arent, possibly cause of the economy?and trades have never been That prolific in the nfl and to think that teams will suddenly start thowing draft picks away is again not looking at the bigger picture.
lastly the whitehurts trade.it was brilliant.they traded a second round pick to gamble on a guy they think is more ready and availablr then a rookie and then they traded next years 3 rd rounder for this years 2nd,excuse me but thats beautifull.
some people need to get a clue

howaboutthat,
That was an amazing way of putting it. You just won this argument and it never even started. how about that!!
I have said that I like almost everything that has happened this off season though nothing has really been exciting.
As I said earlier I would love a 4th if our FO felt that was worth it for Sims. But if competition drives up the price and we end up with something in the third that would be awesome.

Totally off topic, but what do you guys think we could get for Spencer. I really think he is worth a 2nd rounder but we will never like him because he makes us mad that he never lived up to his first round responsibility. He is still an above average center in the NFL.
