As expected, former Patriots TE Chris Baker has signed a 2-year, $4.75M deal with the Seahawks today.

The deal will pay Baker $2.75 during the 2010 season. Baker's role will likely be divided up between run blocking and receiving, given his skill set in both areas. Last season with the Patriots, Baker caught 14 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Not overwhelming stats by any standard, but Baker is a more solid backup tight end option than John Owens. John Carlson will not be in any danger of losing his starting job in Seattle.

Offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates and coach Carroll will want to use more two-tight end sets to help support the run game. Is a signing of Mike Bell in the near future?

This isn't a huge move for the Seahawks, but it has significance because it's their first free agent signing under the new regime of Pete Carroll and John Schneider. In any rebuild, even the small milestones count.
