We had a bit of a weird news day yesterday with the Seahawks appearing on TMZ, of all places, in the midst of Golden Tate-related donut scandals (TateGate?) By now, everyone's proabably seen Tate's apology to the team, Top Pot and the entire Seahawks organization, but it's worth a reprint here anyway:
"I'm very embarrassed to even have my name a part of this," he said. "Before now, I've never had some trouble in any type of school or anything. I'd rather learn on this than have something a few months or years down the road that's a lot bigger and me being arrested or cited for something. So this is definitely a lesson learned for me, and next time, I'm just going to have my buddy go in and buy them instead."
Since Tate escaped this situation with only a wounded pride, it's easy to laugh about it. If the cops had found any evidence of drug use or forced entry into the donut shop, we'd all be banging our heads against the nearest wall in agonized frustration. The worst punishment Tate will be getting is relentless rookie hazing during training camp. Maybe Red Bryant will dress like a giant maple bar at 3 a.m. and beat him with a bar of soap stuffed inside a gym sock.
I have to hand it to Pete Carroll, though, whose reaction to the entire incident is quotebook-worthy:
"Well, I do understand the allure of the maple bars."
Talk about a coach who can relate to his players.
- Beyond late-night donut runs, the Seahawks have been active on the practice field. DT Kevin Vickerson, acquired with LenDale White from the Titans on the final day of April's draft, donned a helmet Tuesday and hit the field for the first time with his new team. Vickerson had been out with a sore hamstring; previously reported as a sore groin.
- RB Leon Washington, though still not practicing while recovering from his broken leg, is now wearing No.33, FB Justin Griffith's old number. This squashes any sign of the veteran fullback returning to the Seahawks this season. Let's hope for a better show from Owen Schmitt in Jeremy Bates' offense.
- The Hawks have agreed to terms with a defensive end named WIll Tukuafu out of Oregon, bringing the total number of Pac 10 players on the Seahawks to somewhere around 92.
- Leroy Hill has a court appearance scheduled for Friday, and a resolution regarding the "embattled" linebacker could be following shortly. Carroll admitted that Hill's off-field troubles have cost him gravely. I think we can safely assume Hill is done being a Seahawk.
- And finally, Carroll was asked by Danny O'Neil if there is now a hole that needs to be filled by a short-yardage back with the release of LenDale White.
"Not necessarily, no," Carroll said. "He had a chance to fit and be part of a role, but it didn't work out. We're looking for guys with unique [skills]. Guys that bring something special and something unique to them and try to give us a good spread of talent and style at the running back spot."
