The NFL's supplemental draft is today and the Seattle Seahawks are expected to be in contention for the big prize du jour, BYU running back Harvey Unga. Why is Unga available in the supplemental draft? Reportedly, he violated BYU's honor code by having pre-marital sex with his fiance. Scandalous! Who is Unga? Well, Wes Bunting has a great write-up of him over at the NFP. Here are some highlights:
He’s built like a fullback, but he strikes me more as a single-back type runner in the NFL. Isn’t real dynamic and isn’t a guy who I want starting for me as an every-down type runner in the NFL. But as a physical No. 2 guy who can win in short yardage and goal line sets and wear down opposing front sevens, he’s your man.
And his measurables, Mr. Bunting:
RB Harvey Unga: BYU (6-1, 244)
2009 stats: 208 carries, 1,087 yards, 5.2 yards per carry, 11 touchdowns
Career stats: 696 carries, 3,455 yards, 4.96 yards per carry, 36 touchdowns
40-time: 4.65
Short shuttle: 4.51
Three-cone drill: 7.41
Vertical: 35 inches
Broad jump: 9 feet, 6 inches
Bunting goes on to list the Seahawks as one of two potential landing spots, but anyone could make a move for him. There were 20 teams interested enough to watch his workout, and of those teams probably half will make some bid. The way the supplemental draft works is that you basically make an offer for how high the pick you'd be willing to give up for this guy is, and you surrender that pick in next year's draft. The Seahawks need a back to replace the role Lendale White was anticipated to play, but if the pick is higher than 5th or 6th round, it'll be hard to say we didn't overpay -- at least, until he turns into a stud.
Stay posted, the supplemental draft takes place at 10am PST.
[UPDATE: The Seahawks took a pass on Unga, as did most of the rest of the league -- he was finally drafted by Chicago in the seventh round. -Ed.]

Hawkdude, players who are not eligible for their college teams this upcoming season and fit the requirements to be NFL eligible are in today's supplemental draft. Only four guys entered it and only two are talked about getting picked. These are guys who were kicked off their college teams recently for violations, injured all last year and could not enter the NFL draft in time, etc. Jake Locker is eligible this year for UW and is going to be a top prospect in the 2011 draft in the spring.
