A few thoughts on the retirement of Sean Morey and what it means for the Seahawks... I'll put it in terms we can all understand:

  • The Good: Sean Morey was, somewhat counter-intuitively, going to affect the compensatory selection the Seahawks would receive in the 2011 Draft. Because Morey is a wide receiver and was a signed unrestricted free agent, he would have significantly offset (in the league's calculus) the Seahawks losing WR Nate Burleson in free agency. We were anticipated to get a 7th round pick for him. Well, as pointed out by John Clayton this morning, his retirement nullifies that affect and there's a good chance that the Seahawks will be rewarded with a 4th round selection for losing Burly. Not bad, eh?
  • The Bad: Morey was a special teams ace and could have seriously improved the awful special teams coverage. We've added a lot of components who should be just fine in those aspects, but let there be no doubt: the special teams unit took a legitimate hit today. That sucks. One more good thing, though, is that Morey will not take up a valuable WR roster spot...
  • The Ugly: Besides being a horrible Stealer for much of his career, the other ugly thing here is the reason for leaving: concussion risk. Morey has had concussion issues in the past and is on the NFL's concussion committee. Along with Lofa Tatupu, Morey has also volunteered to have his brain donated to science after his death. It is not a good sign for the NFL when people are retiring out of fear of concussion threat.
