In potential Seahawk player news, Chester Pitts will be working out for NFL teams tomorrow, which presumably means he's now fully recovered from his knee injury.  Seattle is still being touted as the team most likely to sign Pitts, but that means nothing if the team doesn't send anyone to attend the workout.  More on this as it develops.

*  *  *

On Saturday, former Seahawks Curt Warner, Grant Wistrom, Gino Torretta, and Gordon Hudson were inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.  Anyone who remembers watching the Seahawks play in the 80s knows who Curt Warner is and what he did for Seattle as the team's star running back -- here's a nice compilation of some of his plays spliced together from old film clips (the video is a bit degraded in places, but still watchable).  Defensive end Grant Wistrom played his first six seasons in St. Louis, where he helped the Rams go to two Super Bowls in '99 and '01, then joined the Seahawks toward the end of his career and helped them go to their first Super Bowl in '05.

The other two names are a bit more obscure.  Tight end Gordon Hudson was a local product, being born and raised in Everett, Washington.  After playing his college ball at BYU, he spent two seasons with the Los Angeles Express in the USFL before joining the Seahawks after the USFL folded for his first and only NFL season in '86.

Gino Torretta won the Heisman trophy while playing quarterback for Miami in '92, then spent five seasons in the NFL as a backup QB, two of those with the Seahawks in '96 and '97 (well, one and a half -- he spent the last part of '97 on the Colts' roster).  Torretta got his one and only chance to actually play in a game when he came off the bench to relieve Stan Gelbaugh in the Seahawks' season closer against Oakland in '96.  He was sacked three times and only completed five passes, but one of those passes was a touchdown pass to Joey Galloway in the third quarter that put the Seahawks in the lead for the first time that game.  The Seahawks eventually won, 28-21.

Who would Pitts replace? We went out and signed Hamilton for our LG and I would rather see Unger starting then riding the bench. IMO he would be expensive depth unless we got him on the cheap...
O/T: E.J. Wilson?

How come he isn't listed in the right-hand bar showing our 2010 draft picks? We spent a fourth rounder on the guy.

Gump-

Pitts can play both guard and tackle, so he could be valuable to Seattle as veteran depth for the line, plus he's already familiar with Gibbs' zone blocking scheme. If the Seahawks sign him and he plays backup, I like it; if he gets signed and starts ahead of Unger (robbing him of valuable playing time and stifling his development), then I don't.

diggitus-

You know, I'd never noticed that. I just forwarded the problem on to Chris. Thank you for pointing it out.

Matthew Huett-- I just thought it was funny because I came here searching for news about him. He may be our quietest pick of the draft.
Warner

Statistics and awards can lie. But sometimes when you watch a player, you see what he's worth.
Warner played behind a weak offensive line. Chuck Knox once described the strategy with Warner as "pitch it to him deep in the backfield" and then "let him pick his holes." (We can't give you good blocking, so make 4 yards on a spectacular broken field run. Okay?"
Stat's, awards and records aside, I think he's one of the all time great running backs. (Really.)

DSA, be glad you don't remember!

On the Pitts front, remember that Gibbs likes his young linemen to sit for a couple years to learn the system...subbing Pitts for Unger may actually HELP Unger's development...I'm a big Unger fan, but I trust Gibbs to know what he's doing....

An additional thought...Hamilton is nearing the end of his career, I seriously doubt we'll get more than two years out of him, and likely not more than one. Getting Pitts would give Unger a pressure free year to learn the ropes, then when Hamilton retires, Pitts slides over and helps mentor Okung for another couple years, and by the time Pitts retires (I'm guessing in 3 years), Unger will be able to slide over and between him and Okung, (assuming all goes well) we'll have a pretty damn good left side of the line again. Not really seeing a downside to this scenario...(also gives us 3 yrs to find and groom a RG to take over for Unger...)

I was a huge fan of Warner growing up and its still weird for me to see someone else in that #28 jersey.

I only saw him on TV as a kid but right after college, I decided to buy a car and went to Honda of Seattle in downtown to kick some tires after work..guess who was working there, Curt Warner! He wasn't a sales guy but I guess he was there learning the car business. Does anyone know what he is doing now? Is he still in the area?

Slumpshady--Warner ran his own Car Dealership for years and years. He was probably learning the ropes when you ran into him.

Not sure what he's up to these days, but I heard he got out of the car business...and before that, he'd dropped out of day-to-day operations and just left his name attached to the dealership.

I too think Warner was a great back. He was a surefire HOF'er until his knee injury. Back then knee surgery was terrible--even the worst hack now can do better, it was butchering back in the early 80's. Wihtout that injury, Warner would have been one of the top-5 backs of all time, IMO. Due to the injury and Knox's habit of over-using Warner, added to the Nordstrom/Skinner corps and then Behrings tight pockets leading to sub-par talent around him, Warner burnt out too early to make it in the HOF.

But for 6 seasons, Warner was always among the NFL's elite backs, despite littel surrounding talent after 1986.

We're left with a what might have been.

And unlike Alexander, Warner always got the tough yards and fought for every inch. He never layed down in fear...But I suppose you could make a good comparison that each was a fantastic 6-year back...

Alexander ran behind the best O-line in the league, especially the left side.
Wonder how he'd have done behind an average one.
Caution ! ! ! !

Let's remember Pitts is trying to come back from microfracture knee surgery, the same operation that ended Walter Jones's career and many NBA players as well. So depth might be the best things for him if gotten at vet. minimum.

As for Warner, He was a Monster! I remember Coach Knox trading away are whole draft to get the Penn Stater. People thought he was nuts, but Warner took us to the playoffs and a AFC Championship Game. To bad we lost, I miss being in that Division. Nice to see us play them in real games this year instead of just preseason.

Pete and John Schneider keep saying "thanks, but no thanks" to some older FA's with baggage as they have rebuffed the TO rumors (thank you) and were not present at Chester Pitt's workout today (surprising and kind of disappointing). This according the NFL.com
