As Steve Middleton just reported, Chester Pitts is now a Seahawk (he also beat me to the punch on posting the news -- I guess we know who'd win in a speed-writing contest). To make room on the roster for Pitts and recent draft signee Golden Tate, the team released defensive end Robert Henderson and linebacker Anthony Heygood. Henderson was in a four-way battle with Red Bryant, Lawrence Jacskon, and fourth-rounder E.J. Wilson to man the 5-tech position, so his release was likely due to numbers as much as play on the field.
Heygood's release, however, is a bit of a surprise considering the praise he garnered throughout the team's minicamps. Back in June, LB coach Ken Norton, Jr. had the following to say about him:
Anthony Heygood is young, fast, very athletic, and he's emulating everything that Curry does. Sometimes when you see Heygood play, you think it's Curry.
It's hard to tell what happened between Heygood's public lauding in mid-June and his release today. I can only hope that this means the team feels the seven linebackers remaining on the roster (Aaron Curry, Lofa Tatupu, David Hawthorne, Will Herring, Leroy Hill, Matt McCoy, and Joe Pawelek) are superior talents.

But to avoid confusion, I've made a slight edit to the relevant sentence.

This is a HUGE line improvement over last year, it might not be the best, but it will be a good line that will allow the offense to function, and if OKung is pretty good, then many good things will happen. As has been pointed out over the last few days, everything revolves aroung the O-Line, and with it's improvement, so shall the team improve in every department, due to the reasons we have just laid out from BillT's extra long post, (which basically said the same thing I said last year)
So, This is GREAT. mmmmm koooolaid!

I also suspect Coach Norton was building him up to compete, maybe increase any trade value or his chances of catching on somewhere else. I have often wondered why more NFL teams don't bring in a lot of extra players in the offseason to prevent wear and tear on the frontline guys and evaluate extra depth for the inevitable midseason injury replacement signings.
