Sorry for the quiet blog the last week or so. Today we're going to focus on the lovely Senior Bowl that aired yesterday (I wasn't able to watch it live, so I've got more levity to pause, slo-mo, rewind, etc... and my wife is gone, so this could take a few hours!).

The Senior Bowl is the first major post-season step in the draft process. This is a key draft-stock-saver for a lot of guys (think BJ Raji), but it can also harm the stock dramatically (think Mays so far this year). The Lions are coaching the North, the Dolphins are coaching the South.

  • Dexter McCluster looks incredibly fast on field. He caught a little 2 yard screen pass before just exploding inside for a 12 yard play.
  • Tim Tebow has a terribly awkward release, other than McCluster, the first series was disappointing.
  • Tony Pike is the starting quarterback for the North; first play for the north is a reverse to Clemson WR Jacoby Ford. Pike is incredibly skinny.
  • Patrick Robinson makes a nice tackle. He's one of the quietly solid cornerbacks in the draft, should be a first round pick.
  • Mike Iupati just manhandled a linebacker, joysticking him back about 6 yards. Iupati has improved his draft stock considerably this week, with Mayock suggesting he might be a top 15 pick. I doubt that, as I don't think he'll be able to play LT at the next level, but in practice he's gotten considerable time in every role. He's best at left guard. One problem, which Mayock pointed out, is that he grabs rather than punches, which can easily lead to holding penalties; in the first drive, the North lost a touchdown due to a Iupati hold.
  • It would be difficult to overstate how enormous Terrence Cody is, but stacking him next to Dan Williams (Tennessee DT) is just a lot of fun to watch. Williams just explodes off the ball not unlike Mebane, though he doesn't look as strong as Meebs.
  • Georgia's Geno Atkins looks beastly early on; he was held by Iupati (tackled really) and still managed to second-effort-ground-leap to tackle the running back Bell.
  • Fun guy to watch: Michigan DE Brandon Graham. Graham had a phenomenal week in practice, and continued that in the Senior Bowl game. Graham had two sacks and was named the MVP, but going against pretty inferior talent in Selvish Capers (mid-round OT).
  • The North's defense is filled with starters at the next level: Graham looks to fit the piece, Penn State DT Jared Odrick will be a late first / early second pick, LB Sean Witherspoon and TCU OLB Darryl Washington are there too. David Hawthorne just got a big shoutout.
  • LSU OT Ciron Black showed good effort and surprising speed. USC Center Jeff Byers looked good too (he plays all three interior positions) -- snapping a ball, pulling wide and sprinting down field to be the lead blocker on a 30+ yard screen pass (Black was the other blocker). Byers looks like a mid-round pick. If he's there in the fourth or fifth he would offer good value as someone who could come in from, say, the fourth round and start immediately at Left Guard if Sims doesn't remain on the roster. He knows the system to a T.
  • Ryan Matthews from Fresno State is big and super-fast after the cut. If he's there at the top of the 2nd, it might be hard to pass on him. He gets to the edge very well, but is big enough to run between the tackles. Could be a good back to split carries with Forsett. Another possibility is LaGarrette Blount, but his name is very hard to spell, so screw that. Also, psychotic tendencies.
  • Danny O'Neil has a few kind words for Cal's Tyson Alualu and others. Check it out. One thing the Seahawks could definitely handle more of: Samoan linemen.

Ryan Matthews???
written by KJKnight, January 31, 2010
Intereting observations, but I'm not sure what you were smokin', as Ryan Matthews, the standout RB from Fresno State isn't playing in this game. I think you meant to say Lonyae Miller, Matthews running mate.

Pike is indeed skinny, but he played well and regardless if his stature, still held up just fine and showed a good grasp of the plays and throws. he moved the team well in the first series.

Mays once again showed why so many are fearful of taking him early. He was showing poorly, missing tackles and being generally ineffective, until he finally flashed in for the Int near the EZ.

Dan LeFevour took a while to warm up, but once he did, he looked like the best QB prospect on the field, conversely, Canfield and Tebow looked awful.

LaGarrette Blount looked like a an NFL player, and a man against boys at times, despite his psychotic temperament.

Ben Tate, RB Auburn was decent.

Parrish Cox, Terrell Skinner and Kyle Wilson all looked good and made plays on he ball at the Cb position.
Later round gems
written by Hawksmack, January 31, 2010
I have talked alot about Pete Carrol finding some gems in the later rounds.I recorded all of the practices and watched the game. Here are a few names that are off the radar that could help the Hawks.Matt Tennant C Boston College could be a great Guard and shined all week at practice while all the attention was on Iupati.Chris Cook FS Virginia also shined all week at practice and could be converted to CB at thenext level. He is 6'2 204 and could be a steal in the later rounds.Ohio WR Taylor Price started out the week as the best WR out there but droped a few balls as the week went on and kind of vanished. He is 6'1 and runs like a 4'3 forty. He would be a steal in the later rounds if available and reminds me alot of Miles Austin.Donald Butler UW also had a great week at practice and was quite during the game.He would be great on special teams and a solid backup to play all three linebacker positions.

I do like LaGarrette Blount, regardless of his tendency to punch people.

But for real, IDK how much that punching incident hurt his stock, IDK where he was projected to go and IDK where he will land now. If he does slide to the middle of the third I wouldn't mind trading up again into the third to get him.

If Pete is as good as we all hear he is at reaching out to troubled youth, and I wouldn't even call Blount troubled, this shouldn't be an issue. You have to take risks to win in this league and Blount is a risk that could have huge payoff.

Its nice know that we at least possibly will take Blount. With Ruskell there was zero percent chance. I think he will be as good of pro as Corey Dillon was. Before this season he was a projected first round pick after only one year of college ball(JC Transfer). I watched him in the Civil War, Rose Bowl, and Senior Bowl. He has what it takes to make it in the NFL.

MY DREAM DRAFT SCENARIO:

-We trade our 1st(6) pick and Deion Branch to Denver for their 1st(11) and Brandon Marshall. This is the equivalent of giving Branch and an 2nd for Marshall.
-Brian Price at 11.
-We trade back from 14 to 17-18 and get back a 3rd round pick.
- Iupati at 17-18
- Charles Brown at 40
- Blount in 3rd
-Myron Rolle in 4th

Notice how I want us to take a lot of West Coast guys. Vince Wolfork said that if he doesn't resign with NE he wants to play for TB or Miami because he played at the U and loves it down south.
I think part of the reason Hutch left was because he went to school at Michigan, and liked it there, so he wanted to play for a team in the upper midwest.

Myron Rolle is a beast, I would love him on this team. I doubt that Charles Brown slides to #40 though. If Jordan Gross went in the top 10 Brown will definitly be a first round pick.

Ryan Matthews is a junior, he wasn't in Mobile. He's over rated for me. Just 'meh' really. Takes what he's given, no great speed or power. When I watched him for Fresno State, I thought late third rounder at best. If anyone takes him in round 2, it'll be a big reach for me. Not a good draft at RB.

The more and more I hear, read, and watch anything that has to do with this guy it becomes clear that Iupati should be in a Seahawks uniform next season.

Blount will fall
written by Hawksmack, January 31, 2010
Blount cant stay out of trouble. He had problems staying focused this week and scouts know all about his character issues. One decent game in the senior bowl will not help this kid and I dont see him getting drafted before Mathews,Best and Dwyer.Blount will probably get drafted in the third round and could fall even more with the combine interviews.Blount will not be a Seahawk. He needs to do a better job of catching the ball and is blocking is crap.As for Iupati he will be a first round pick but is limited to playing only left guard and had trouble playing on the right side in the senior bowl. This kid is a beast but there is a chance he could fall to the second round due to the fact he doesnt punch off the line and has the tendency to grab alot.It will be intersting how well he performs at the combime. He will probably get picked in the first though.I am looking forward to seeing him matched up with Suh.There should be a good shake up come Feb 25th when they all get together again.Does anyone know if there is a certain date players can be traded.I want to see the Hawks unload some junk for a few more picks.

I agree with you Omar Little on Blount. These are the kinds of players we can take a chance on with Pete Carroll. Pete has the ability to bring out the best in troubled youth.

Besides, I used to play ice hockey and there were times I wanted to do what Blount did and punch one of the players that pissed me off after the game. It's not like Blount stomped on his face, raped a girl, or drove his car through a nursing home (Jeremy Stevens). I new about stevens before he even went to UW. He had criminal problems before he even got out of high school.

Blount punched a player talking $h!t. Was it deserved? Probably. Should he have hit the guy? Probably not. He's a competitor he wants to win! I can't fault the guy for that.

I like Blount. He was a guy I had my eye on this year, or I should say wanted to have my eye on, but I'm hesitant with his speed and lack of open field agility. He didn't seem too aweful elusive in the open field and his speed attributed to that.

I wouldn't be upset at all by drafting him, but Stafon Johnson seems like a better prospect to me than Blount. The kid was impressive from what I saw of him and if he didn't get his throat crushed he would be the 2nd rounder (possibly a 1st) and McKnight would have been the compliment and probably returning for his senior year.

Either way, I'm more for beefing up the trenches in the mid rounds as opposed to taking skills positions. I personally think that this is a very poor RB class and outside Spiller, Best, Matthews and Dwyer there is not much value. Karim might be a great stab at a project pick in the later rounds. A one year wonder in a mid major, but has the size, speed and athleticism to back his phenomenal season.

Exactly my point recordblender, its not like he has character issues like say a Pac Man Jones or Matt Jones. He lost his temper, nothing more. Is it troubling that he did it? Yes. Is it a question mark? Yes. Should it be a red flag, disqualifing factor? No.

If this guy is on the board in round 4, which he probably will be from what sources keep saying we should not hesitate. He is the perfect back to split carries with Forsett. That may give us one of the better power/speed combos in the NFL, up there with Rice/McGahee and hopefully Williams/Stewart.

Like I said, you have to take risks to win in this league.

I am pretty sure we will draft a RB with one of our first 3 picks. We need to draft a CB that is over 6ft tall in the fourth.Quit wasting your time on Blount.

I vote no Blount. You can overlook his thuggish actions if you like...he's still doesn't have a burst and doesn't really have much in the way of moves. A RB that takes too long to get up to speed is no better than one that doesn't have speed at all. If you want a bruiser RB without moves take Gearhart.

I keep saying on here that I feel there is only value in 4 backs (Spiller, Best, Dwyer and Matthews) but the more I think about it and research it, Spiller and Dwyer are really the only ones I'd be truely happy with. I like Best, but his size is a big issue for me and I would only be happy with Matthews in the 3rd. Even then I'd be iffy about it as we'd have to trade back in to get it. Still think Karim (from what I've scouted so far) would be a good 6th or 7th.

I don't know how people can be concerned with Jahvid Best's size, but not CJ Spillers. They weigh exactly the same and Jahvid is just one inch shorter. This is one of the reasons I really don't like either of them. We have a GOOD elusive back. His name is Justin Forsett.

As far as Dwyer goes. He was suppose to be the best back in the draft at the beginning of this year. I don't see it at all. GT's program was designed to run the ball, and he still didn't have a great year. He would be an absolute waste of a pick in the 2nd.

There are going to be a bunch of late round pounders. To be honest I would be happy with anyone of these three, Gerhart, Blount, Scott (LSU). I really think one of them will be around in the fourth and would complement Forsett well. Why waste an early pick on something we can get late. We need O-line and secondary help.

ben tate looked like a beast in the few games that i watched him, he is 5'11'' and 220 pounds, he has great size for those short yardage plays and he also breaks tackles like crazy, he fights for every yard and doesnt just fall when hit, if hes availible in the fourth or if we get a third and hes there i deffinately think we should take him... i feel we should get a d-lineman, a o-lineman and a big corner or safety that could be changed to a corner... i also like the idea of trading for matt moore, he has great potential.... i am absolutely a huge fan of forsett and think we should either get ben tate in the draft or get a power back in free agency to go with forsett... we shouldnt forget about teel, hes been almost forgoten in all of the convos about a new QB, let hass start for a year then throw in teel after hes been tought the game by the great hasslebeck.. obviously jim mora wasnt very good at evaluating talent after starting jones instead of forsett and even letting ken lucas look at the field... what if teel was one of those tom brady type late round draft picks???? i cant wait for carroll to re-evaluate our team, also with our fith we should deffinately get a big reciever or even a lineman that could surprise every one?? what are your thoughts?
...
written by omar little, February 01, 2010
You can never draft too many linemen IMO. If we can trade back to around pick 20 I'd be all for taking Iupati, if our staff feels he can fit the ZBS. 14 is way too hard for a guard, especially one who is only average in pass protection.
...

Ben Tate is not a bad prospect. Although I don't know if I would take him in the fourth round. A few key reasons.

1. Tate put up nice numbers this year, but when you look at his averages he is a little inconsistent. Many games averaging less than 5 yards a carry. Compare that with Lagerrete Blount who only had three games with Oregon where he had less than an average of 5 yards a carry. Two of those games he had less than 10 carries and the other was the infamous Boise St game.

2. I don't like Ben Tates touchdown to carries ratio. Even if you take his best year his average is a touchdown for every 26.3 carries. Blounts for his entire carrier is 1 for every 8.4 carries.

He's not a bad pick. I just think maybe for a 5th or 6th rounder if we haven't picked up a back by then.
...
written by cts, February 01, 2010
You can't look at that ratio because it depends on how they were utilized. Let's not forget what Blounts role was a year ago. He was more of the Duckett to Jones role. Of course his TD's will be inflated. And if there was ever an every down RB who truely had a TD every 8 times he touched the ball he would be the best player EVER.

Best is 5'9" and change, he's almost 2 inches shorter than Spiller and let's be honest, Spiller is on another level than ANY of the other RB's. On the field, he looks so much quicker/faster than any RB this year. And just because he weighs the same doesn't make him a better prospect. And traditionally, smaller backs like Best cannot become everydown backs due to their size. Most small RB's will NEVER be a Napoleon Kaufman type back and that raises a red flag for me.

What psychotic tendencies did you observe in Blount? Like stalking movie stars, or collecting weapons, or talking to himself about world domination? Or are you just taking a cheap shot at a college kid?
To: CTS
written by recordblender, February 01, 2010
If what your saying is true about Blount being used primarily as a third down back, then his average per carry is even more impressive, because he got that average in situations where the other teams knew he would be running the ball. That totally throws that notion out of the water.

As far as CJ Spiller goes, I think he is the best back in the draft. My argument is that if you are going to throw Jahvid Best under the bus for his size, then it is only suiting you do the same for Spiller. I myself think that height is not a big deal at the running back spot. In fact, many linebackers in the league will tell you it is more difficult to track a shorter back coming through the line. So, I really don't think an inch or as you say an inch and a half are a big deal. If this was a corner or a widereciever I would agree with you that height is a concern.
...
written by omar little, February 01, 2010
Spiller plays a lot bigger than a guy his size. He is way more physical than Best in every aspect of the game. He is also a great option to use in passing situation, while Best struggles pass catching and blocking.

I like Best's mesurables but to me he is not worth a second round pick. I'd much rather take a guy like Dwyer or even Matthews (who I find very overrated) in round 2 than Best, if we even go RB at all.
...
written by cts, February 02, 2010
Size matters because shorter guys typically have a harder time dealing with bigger guys. It's about angles and leverage. Smaller guys are forced to play bigger. Either way, Spiller is on a different level than Best.

As for the Blount thing, I was pointing out that he would be getting more of the goal line touches due to his size. That is what inflates his stats.
This ratio should not be being looked at in the first place because it's somewhat irrelevant. My biggest argument against Blount (which I have stated that I like him over the other big backs minus Dwyer) is his speed. You can get away with 4.6 in college i.e. Dayne, Gerhart, etc., but it doesn't translate well to the NFL. That's my only knock against the guy.
