The Seahawks have gotten down to two finalists for the GM job, and the reports coming out of Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network is that Floyd Reese is one of them (Brian McIntyre of sea.scout.com reports the second is Omar Khan).

One of those two men will be your next general manager, ladies and gentlemen.

Floyd Reese was quietly the front runner since Pete Carroll was named head coach. He has a ton of experience scouting and making personnel decisions, and worked with Carroll in the 1980s on the Vikings defense. Look for Pat Kirwan to still be brought on in some capacity. In the mean time: Go Floyd!

I don't see Khan making a lick of sense, as he is basically the contract guy. Only thing I can think of is that Idzik's job might also be somewhat up in the air. The Steelers have been very good with cap control and resigning key cogs without breaking the bank.

I think they hire both

assuming they can make everyone happy with their title.

The Seahawks haven't exactly been great with the cap and their free agent strategies in recent years. And while Floyd Reese is great talent evaluator, we all remember the CAP HELL that Ten had to escape, its how they got Vince Young. They had to cut everybody that year to clear it up. Kahn and Reese could work in concert to form a very strong front office. Its not clear what would happen with Webster and Idizk, but they could both stay as #2s. Pat Kirwan sounds as if he will be Carroll's adviser/confidant but have not real title. All of this could form a very strong group. I hope i am right. IF they want them both, Paul Allen is likely to make it happen. You can get anybody comfortable with their official title if their paycheck pays em like the one they wanted.

Maybe they bring Reese as GM and Kahn as Cap. Leiwike said he was going to have three spots. HC,GM and Cap. I know they have Idzik but not sure he is is their guy.

I like the idea of taking talent from both the Steelers and Patriots.

Just wish the Hawks could figure a way to take from the Vikings.

Source on Kahn? Brian McIntyre's latest article there lauds Schneider and Ross while dismissing Kahn as not making any sense.
GM

I am very impressed with the search for our next GM. I think either man will work out well, but if we actually land Floyd Reece, I believe we will have a net increase in talent evaluation(from Ruskell) in our GM and we will have a more defined direction with Carrol.

I still believe Mora was wronged by the Seahawks, but if we did it to get Floyd Reece and Pete Carrol... Sorry Jim.

When all of this started going down, I was very sceptical of how things were transpiring. I thought it was ass-backwards and was concerned about the number of titles PC would be obtaining. I am breathing a sigh of relief seeing that a proven commodity such as Reese would be joining to help make those decisions easier. I think he adds serious credibility, not to mention ability to draft and develop talent. I'm getting excited!

Kahn isnt going to leave Pitt without a promotion. Dont know why they would consider him GM unless Caroll doesnt really want a personnell-guru GM to mess with him.

Reese makes a hell of a lot more sense--you shouldnt pass up good personnell evaluaters.

Hiring both sounds good--but perhaps too many cooks spoiling the soup?
Who hates Leiweke now?
written by Billy Showbiz, January 14, 2010
Just 10 days ago or so there was so much talk about how Leiweke needed to go and that he was ruining the team. Where is all of that talk now? Would anyone rather have Holmgren at Mora at this point? I'm sure that there are some of you out there but I think that together Leiweke and Paul Allen have done a great job with this. Sure it did not go perfectly smooth as far as the process is concerned and Mora was the one who got the raw deal but it's not like we kept him on pins and needles for months, it was one week and they did not know if they were going to get the coach they wanted in Carroll.

I really like Carroll's role too. I think that the coach has to have a lot of say in what type of players he will get through the draft and F.A. For example, Pete says we need an explosive RB like CJ Spiller. Then the GM, presumably (hopefully) Reese can reply and say something like "I think we can get what you are looking for out of Jahvid Best or Joe McKnight for better value. Here's my scouting reports Pete, what do you think?" At that point they come to a decision together based off of the coaches need and the GM/Scout's evaluation of how to fulfill that need with a mediator in place if necessary. That sounds like a pretty good model to me.

Leiweke is still there because he and Paul Allen work well together and this in my opinion is evidence of that.

Easiest decision of the offseason. This guy is a proven commodity and has history with the HC. I will be very disappointed if he isnt the GM.

I'm sure Paul Allen was waiting until after Carroll was hired in order to get Pete's input and approval in hiring the GM. Reese had his heyday with the Titans but has done nothing impressive in recent years. A senior football advisor for the Patriots...what a laugh! All this search hype and this is the best Leiweke can do? As long as Reese keeps his mouth shut and does what boss Carroll tells him, it's another front office position occupied.

Signs pointing to Reese as GM in Seattle
Posted: January 14th, 2010 | Jason La Canfora | Tags: Floyd Reese, John Schneider, Marc Ross, Omar Khan, Paul Allen, Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks

There continue to be indications that Floyd Reese, the most experienced of the finalists for the general manager job in Seattle, is the favorite to land the position.

Reese has already had contact with owner Paul Allen, according to a source. Reese already has worked with new coach Pete Carroll in the past and has deep roots with him. The other candidates believe Reese will get the job.

The Seahawks have completed the interview process, which Carroll was a key part of. The other finalists — Omar Khan, Marc Ross and John Schneider — are younger and have not served as GMs before. Several had impressive interviews, according to sources, but there is a sense among that group that it very well will be Reese’s job.

Leonard Weaver
written by Joe in Kirkland, January 14, 2010
I know this is a post about the GM spot, but how about Leonard Weaver being chosen for the ALL PRO team today. The Hawks just let him walk away without any real effort to sign him, instead going with the "head banger" Owen Schmitt.
Nice job Ruskell. Is it any wonder you are unemployed?

I agree, Joe from Kirkland. All because he didn't fit into Greg Knapp's offense. What a waste
nobody "hates" Leiweke
written by TacomaHawk, January 14, 2010
Billy Showbiz, I can really only speak for myself, but criticism of Leiweke and calling for his removal are not the same. I did hate the whole "them joining us" thing. Still do. And I'm glad that he has done a complete 180 from that position. I hated that he hung Jim Mora over every prospective GM's head. Still do, and also glad he has pulled a complete 180 from THAT position. What has transpired so far with Pete Carroll is the complete opposite of everything Leiweke said in the weeks between Ruskell leaving and Pete's hire. Was all of this about Paul Allen putting a boot in his ass, or was Leiweke just trying to keep everything on the DL till he could raise the curtain? I have no idea. Either way, this is the Pete Carroll show, he is most certainly not "joining us."
I do agree that Carroll deserves input into personnel decisions. I also agree that cleaning house and making Carroll part of the process (if not the decider) is the best way to prevent future in-fighting and the dysfunction it brings.

I don't know, Farmer, that sounds like the same ol', same ol' we've been hearing... trade a big sack of crap for a Pro Bowler. He claims a "member of the Seattle media" as his source... the same Seattle media that had no clue the team was pursuing Carroll. I'll believe it when I see it.
