This is also probably no surprise, but Pete Carroll has recruited Brian Schneider, his former special teams coach at USC, to do the same job with the Seattle Seahawks.

It appeared Bruce DeHaven's fate was sealed the minute Jim Mora was fired, but many were calling for his head well before the end of this season. To be fair, special teams wasn't an area of huge concern in this otherwise dismal season, but Carroll is running the show now, and he was going to get his guy.

I'm unfamiliar with Schneider's credentials, other than that he helmed USC's special teams under Carroll. A comment left on this forum in the provided link, however, leaves a less than favorable impression:

Seriously though, Pete is leaving to compete and win up there in Seattle, so I thought. What is he doing taking these crappy assistants with him. Bates was terrible. Schneider was terrible. Is this the best he can do?

If nothing else, the new coaching staff has definitely worked together before. Then again, so did Jim Mora and Greg Knapp.

Lechler went to the Pro Bowl every year, and his kick/punt returners scored 2 or 3 times a year in the return game. Many of SCs problems in special teams last year were due to the fact that they lost Beuhler who had a huge leg. The current kicker has a noodle leg

Improvement
written by IdahoSeahawksFan, January 13, 2010
Anything at this point is an improvement for Seattle in the special teams category. Too many years now we have stunk that up. Thank God we have an awesome punter otherwise if we would have stuck with Fudgeameyer we would have been beaten out by special teams plays every game.

Which is worthless on the open market... You can quickly judge a teams talent level by looking at special teams play. I believe the depth chart represents not only how much future talent there is, but also how much 1st and 2nd string talent there is.

It's funny to hear comments about al the talent on the Seahawks and depth, yet our special teams play is horrible. I'm unsure you can put all the blame on the ST coach, especially if they have demonstrated success in the past. It is more likely a problem w/ your scouting and drafting department.

I'm hoping Carroll begins his rebuild by stocking special teams players. Field position will help a novice offense immensly. Plus you get the developement started on many a young players to hopefully become starters.

Bills special teams were one of the only things that worked for them last season. With April caught up in the staff purge in Buffalo, I'm sad that the Seahawks didn't go after him.

I would not give any consideration to anything USC fans say about Carroll's assistants. All I read from USC fans after we hired Sarkisian was about how horrible he was and how happy they were to get rid of him and how he was holding the team back and UW did them a big favor by hiring the guy. Turns out he was a bit better than they advertised.

Also, I've read a number of USC fan complaints about Sark's replacement, Bates. They complain that he's way to conservative in the passing game. The team is starting a freshman QB, and they don't understand why he might be conservative?

At least I havn't read anyone dumb enough to try and bad mouth Ken Norton Jr, but I'm sure they're out there if you look around.

I dont understand the comment about Jeremy Bates from Mike Parker:

"Seriously though, Pete is leaving to compete and win up there in Seattle, so I thought. What is he doing taking these crappy assistants with him. Bates was terrible. Schneider was terrible. Is this the best he can do?"

Mike, how do you figure that they are crappy? Jeremy was awesome with Jay Cutler and the Broncos when he was their offensive coordinator. Take a little bit of time and look at the Broncos offensive stats before he went to the Broncos, while he was at the Broncos and now since he left. He really made Cutler look like a superstar. That is why the Bears wanted him so badly.

Mr. Carroll
written by LouieLouie, January 13, 2010
This is interesting; Coach Carroll not only brings the experience he gained rebuilding the USC program into a , he's bringing the entire program.

The Hawks hired him because he has more than a vision about how to build a dynasty; he's done it. He has control over staff hiring He brougt the best and brightest from USC.

He is decisive and deliberate, and the new face of the Seahawks. These new guys will hit the ground running long before the 2010 draft.

I'm excited. Let's get a GM, and get on with it.
