These reports are continuing to pour out of the cracks, and thanks to reader RecordBlender, we've got another one coming in.
A fellow named Eric Balkman at CraftyBalky Sports Blog says he keeps hearing locker room rumors that Brandon Marshall is all but on his way to becoming a Seahawk, and that the Hawks would deal Deion Branch back to Josh McDaniels to the Denver Broncos in exchange. Obviously, the Hawks would almost certainly have to throw something else in to equal Marshall's value, and what that might be remains to be seen. (But from what it sounds like over the past season in Denver, the Broncos might take Branch and a $100 Starbucks gift card just to get Marshall somewhere else.)
And sure, there's been plenty of negativity surrounding Marshall and his "embattled" behavior, namely at the beginning of this season. But if Pete Carroll can seemingly get through to inner-city gang members in Los Angeles, maybe he can work his magic on Marshall. It's just a thought.
This situation also comes with a massively catastrophic downside, of course. TJ Houshmandzadeh proved that his ego can barely fit inside the front door of the VMAC this season, and he really didn't do a whole lot to back up the "give me the ball" attitude. Granted, the offensive line couldn't protect Hasselbeck long enough for him to even pull a Seneca-style frantic backwards run for a 10-yard loss, but the offseason should change that. It really should. If the offensive line isn't seriously repaired and re-organized in the next few months, the 12th Man has a right to mutiny. You heard it here first.
Anyway, I digress. The prospect of Brandon Marshall in a Seahawk uniform makes me all giddy inside, so long as we can keep Denver's first-round pick and Marshall doesn't try to punch Pete Carroll in the face during training camp. Is that too much to ask?!

Classic line.
I hope it happens, as long as the guy can be tamed.

We have a good QB for now who probably has a couple of years left in him. Get some protection around him. Maybe even trade for a guy like Derek Anderson to back him up - who knows, he might even turn out to be the guy. He wsn't so bad a couple of years ago and from what I saw, he's got potential. In the right scheme and with some good coaching, I think this guy could be something special. His stock is low right now, so perhaps we can get him for cheap?

Written by the "sports editor of... the campus newspaper of University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh." This is not a reliable source for anything, let alone Denver Broncos locker room news.
We'll see how the new regime looks at Brandon Marshall, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. The only "rumor" is that Brandon Marshall's old playcaller is now our new playcaller, and it seems like Denver wants to trade him.
Considering what they got for their last overrated player (two firsts, starting QB, and then some), not certain we'd be willing or wise to cover the costs for a legit talent who is a complete and total headcase. I'm not saying it won't happen, and I'm not saying he isn't a very talented WR, but there are probably a dozen teams out there who would kill for him.
written by Seahawk Addicts, January 13, 2010
umervil, Buckhalter, Orton, etc). To believe that Deion Branch would be a significant part of a trade just doesn't make sense. Even if he does have talent, he is not perceived to by just about anyone. The price for Marshall would be at least a first, probably more. The idea that we could just unload our dead weight and get a superstar is a fan's dream. We traded dead weight last year (Peterson) and got about the same in return (Redding). Again, I'm not saying this couldn't happen, but the price would be huge.

That being said it almost makes too much sense, especially given that we would probably be trading their OWN pick right back to them. I would still do the deal, but dang I hope this legs to it.

1. Brandon Marshall and Elvis Dumervil are free agents.
2. If you were Josh Mcdaniels who would you franchise? The sack leader of the league in Elvis Dumervil or a wide reciever you have had problems with who is talented but a total pain in your neck. This is a no brainer....Dumervil.
3. If you had the choice of getting nothing for Brandon Marshall or trading him away to get a former Super Bowl MVP who was successful in your system and a 4th round pick before he hits the free agent market, which would you do?
4. If you were Brandon Marshall and liked the system you were once in, wouldn't you be interested in playing for your old OC?
All I'm saying is if the shoe fits...it may be possible. That's not to say that a team like Chicago won't be interested as well. However, I think they would be a little more cuatious considering they already used a first for a quarterback that hasn't done much for them.

(1) Shouldn't we get a GM on board before we start making deals like this? Or is this an admission that it's just a figurehead position after all?
(2) Whether I'd be revolted by this deal depends on what price we would have to pay for a known malcontent like Marshall. Me, I'd give them Branch and Kelly Jennings, but only because I'm feeling generous.
(3) So now we think Hasselbeck has the arm to get the ball deep to Marshall?

This has to be the flimsiest of rumors. Even flimsier than the ones about Norm Chow and DeWayne Walker joining Carroll's staff.
But isn't it interesting that people in other parts of the country are spreading rumors about the Seahawks now?
written by MattPeaty, January 13, 2010
My point is that the Broncos want Dummerville back, he had a huge year and a contract could be difficult meaning he most likely gets the Tag.
If he gets the tag, then the Broncos can't tag Marshall (unless the the expiration of the CBA goes into effect in which case teams would have 2) They then could franchise both. It should be interesting to see what happens.
written by scottM, January 13, 2010
The bottom line is we still have to negotiate with him, and he has HUGE personality Issues
We need ALL of our early picks, remember we do not have a 3rd round pick

Aside from all of this I wouldn't mind having Brandon Marshall on our team, he will no doubt be an explosive playmaker for this team, he makes plays happen which is exactly what we need on this team. I'm tired of this sissy team Ruskell build when even our own (former) coach Mora says he need dirtbags on this team to toughen us up.

You franchise Marshall to ensure you can trade and get something of value for him. He may be a pain in the ass, but he is a commodity and you certainly don't give those away if you can help it.
They wouldn't franchise him with the intent to keep him, but rather franchise him so they can trade and get something, anything for him. Any draft pick is better than no draft pick and Marshall is a pro bowler. I would think Denver would want to get something back, but like I said he only gets franchised if the new CBA goes into effect this offseason allowing teams to have 2 tags. I believe Dummerville will get their franchise tag if they only have 1, which is why his contract status plays a huge role in what the Broncos decide to do with Marshall.
written by MattPeaty, January 14, 2010
We added Housh last offseason and it's difficult to think that we would add Marshall unless Branch AND Burlesons contracts are moved.
written by TacomaHawk, January 14, 2010
ha ha ha, just kidding, man. I remember Sando writing about this and figured it was some variation of his article.
That guy's been stirring up a lot of stinkies lately....
written by TheRealist, January 14, 2010
Roy Williams was traded for a 1st and a 3rd round pick. I doubt there is anyone out there who thinks Roy Williams is better than Brandon Marshall. If we want Marshall, it will cost one of our first round picks absolutely. The Broncos are not going to just give away top tier talent.

For the love of all that's holy, quit your crying about T.J. He's confident, he's not an egotist and his comments are no way harming this team. Fact is, he SHOULD get the ball more. We wasted his talent this year, and in the instances when he did mess up, he admitted it. He only called for the ball more when we were losing, because he felt he could've made a difference. He never called for it when we won.
God forbid a Seahawk player should actually believe he can make a difference...and want to.
written by CWEH, January 14, 2010
2- Move is not worth our 1st round or 2nd round picks. Unless, they want Dion and our 4th.
3- I see everyone talking about TJ.. so are we done with Nate B or is he moving to number 3 (which, I think he would be a star).
written by S.TTBM, January 14, 2010
Also, Housh has to be sick about this last year. Anything that might ease pressure on the qb and himself would have to be considered a good thing. Having Marshall on the team would mean many more opportunities for Housh, and less pressure from DB's. Who would ever double-cover Housh with Marshall on the opposite side?
The problem is Branch probably wouldnt even bring a fourth round pick. Even NE and Denver cant want him that bad, and despite what Branch said, I dont see him taking a pay cut to stay unless he hears neither Denver nor NE want him. Otherwise, I expect him to refuse a pay cut, get cut, then sign with either of those teams.
Marshall is a punk, but again, if we win and he likes Caroll, maybe it will work out. Marshall isnt Chad Johnson. Look at Randy Moss is NE--it took till now for him to start acting up.
I dont think Burleson has anything to do with this. If we can score a WR of Marshall talent--or even just someone slightly more consistent that Nate, his ass is either relegated to number 3 status (where he belongs) or unemployed.
Another concern is the huge ammount of money Marshall would want. Teams like the Redskins (with his old coach) and Bears (with his old qb) would just about sign a blank check to get him. How can Seattle compete with that without trashing the cap? Plus, Marshall is such a talent, whats to stop a bidding war caused by jealous teams ensuring whatever team gets him pays too much?
I say we only have a 15% chance of landing him. And thats supposing Caroll wants him.

Marshall is not a Restricted Free Agent. His contract is up and will be able to test the market assuming he isn't tagged.

I'm not complaining about TJ, but I'm saying he does have a big ego. Does it hurt this team? No. But did he back up the talk by walking the walk this year? No. And that's not his fault. I made sure to cite the fact that Matt had horrible protection and couldn't get the ball out more often than not this year.
Better pass protection + another deep threat = a respectable offense in the air for the Hawks.
written by Bellevue, January 14, 2010
TJ mentions he spoke to Marshall about new OC Jeremy Bates, and apparenly Marshall had only good things to say. A little foreshadowing? I hope so.

So yeah, it appears Marshall will be a restricted free agent. Costly to land him anyway you slice it, via trade or in free agency as he would cost draft picks aplenty.

I really don't see this happening with us, we just have too many needs (OT,OG,RB,CB,S,QB of the future)
I expect Marshall to land in Baltimore or maybe Miami. Both have young talented QBs who are starving for some help at reciver, and both seem to be set playoff contenders for several years so they can also afford to give up more than we can.
written by omar little, January 14, 2010
I love his swagger, its something this team has lacked in a long time. I'm glad to get some competitive spirit on this team, maybe if we had more guys like TJ and Matt we would have finished above .500. These two seem to be the only ones who care about winning I hate to say...
written by elroy, January 14, 2010
Deon Branch is worth nothing to me but hopefully the value him as a 4th round pick. We would basically be giving up a lower 2nd round pick and a 6th for Brandon Marshall.
