Wow! I haven't read the blog since I decided to take some time off and I was catching up on some of the comments yesterday and read the responses to the announcement I was leaving the blog. I have to tell you Addicts it brought a tiny tear to my eye (which I quickly wiped away before anyone noticed). I didn't know so many readers really cared about what I had to say. After reading all the appeals to continue writing, I did a lot of soul searching and decided I would continue to write occasionally.
I think everyone knows the issues over which I decided to retire or at the least, take some time off. I'd like to run something by you Addicts concerning unwarranted personal remarks. I asked about suspending privileges for those who continued personal attacks or insults. Chris said that the only thing we could do at the administrative level was to shut off comments unless we hired a censor and put a delay on publishing comments until they were reviewed. He's considered shutting off comments a few times this past year but to me that would really kill what we've built here. I can't imagine Seahawk Addicts without input from all of you guys who make up our blogging community. I would rather leave the blog than have comments shut off so I resigned.
[Chris' note: This blog would never exist without the comments, and I didn't offer to shut the comments off, just mentioned the only way to 100% control for rude/inappopriate comments was to shut them off. The community is the reason the blog exists. Also: Welcome Back Bill!]
I really thought there would only be three or four posters who would care and post anything about it. I was touched by the amount of support I saw and it felt genuine so I've decided to continue to write sparingly but I'm not going to put up with being insulted and neither should anyone else. Press "Read more..." to continue.
I do have delete authority but unfortunately when I start deleting remarks that are out of line, accusations are made that comments are being deleted because someone disagreed with me which is really far off base. I never delete a comment unless the poster gets personal or worse makes racial slurs and remarks, however, it can be a real catch 22 situation. Readers don't like to see personal attacks or racially oriented posts but no one likes a censor either and people get suspicious when something gets deleted.I'd like to appeal to everyone who posts here to help police the blog themselves and let anyone who steps out of line know it's not only unacceptable to management, it's unacceptable to other posters as well. Seahawk Addicts posters should stand together for anyone who writes an article or posts a comment here at SA. We should make everyone feel welcome and safe posting here as long as they respect our rules and stay on topic. None of us should have to suffer a personal attack because we endorsed an idea or player/coach connected with the Seahawks. Attack the posters position, his ideas and proclamations, or the accuracy of his data but don't get personal. Instead of saying "You're an idiot to suggest.....", say something like "I don't agree with your suggestion to ......". Instead of saying "WTF. Don't you know anything about football with your stupid idea to..... ", say something like "I'm not sure your idea makes good football sense to....". You guys all know what I'm talking about. Don't attack the man, attack what he has to say. Debate the issue and don't bicker trading derogatory personal remarks.
If a poster crosses the line, everyon needs to let him know like many of you did last Summer when a poster was including racial remarks in his comments. Many of you Addicts let him know his comments weren't welcome and if he didn't clean it up, neither was he. You should do the same for any poster bringing personal attacks into play against anyone who posts or writes for the blog. If the violator sees that other posters object to his comment, he'll either realize that he was out of line and apologize or understand no one is going to read or respond to his comments or endorse anything he has to say. We can effectively ban him by not communicating with him beyond criticizing his personal attack.
I give any poster a chance to stop his insults but the second time and beyond, he'll be censored in some way. I'll either delete his comment or delete the offending material from it (or I have an idea that could even be fun). I hope everyone observes what material does get censored and notes that nothing is getting touched just because someone disagreed with me. Anyone with a complaint of that nature, can make their case and I will respond.
I've been asked by a few of you to write about Ruskell's resignation and Mora's firing. I had a couple of articles about Ruskell and Carroll in work when I retired so I'll finish them up and publish by Friday. They are typical BillT articles and go around 2000 words each so be forewarned. The articles are as true to my real feelings and opinions as possible. I expect disagreement, concurrence, and maybe even some indifference but I don't expect to have to read insults directed at me because of the subject or my opinion on that subject. I realize that Ruskell is still a painful topic for some but don't shoot the messenger, however, say whatever you want about the article. Remember, if you want to strongly disagree, the article is stupid, not me. I also have a number of observations about the new regime that will be a follow up article probably on Saturday.
Thanks to everyone who gave me support either in a comment or in your own hearts. As Gene Autry used to sing, "I'm back in the saddle again. Back where a friend is a friend.". Watch for my Ruskell reaction Friday. I'm sure it will annoy some of you if for no other reason, it's long.
Hasta,
BillT

I too have seen (by reading the posts) this blog go in a different direction. I think the writers of the blog set an example in their articles.
Really would like to read your take on the last few weeks of hawkville. Also it would be great to hear from Steffes since he used to go out to the USC pro days and knows the USC teams very well. Any updates on Steffes in general? He seemed to drop off the face of the earth since his marriage.

I agree with the ban on personal attacks. I will watch my wording more carefully when I am annoyed by someone's opinion so that I am not guilty of the same thing.
I would caution you that "labeling" someone is very personal, and the same thing as an insult. If I hear myself or anyone else who disagree's with your interpretation labeled "negative" I would consider that a personal attack and an insult, as I am sure many others would as well.
Though I have disagreed with you both often and mightily, I have never thought you lacked intelligence; Lacking logic at times, but that is simply my opinion and I attempt to back it up/explain my position.
So welcome back! And I am looking forward to discussing your take on Ruskell/Mora. Dont forget the text message and Mora's under-the-breath Caroll comment! (Im dying to know if this affected how you view the Ruskell Years).

I am still having a hard time with some of the negative comments I have read that were directed to you. The stupidest so far, is the "Bill's articles are to long." Seriously people if you don't like the length of an article then don't read it. I personally love the depth of experession you use to explain your self. There is a lack of great blogs and info on the Seahawks. We need you Bill. I wish I had more time to contribute to the comments section of this blog. working full time with small kids, as well as working on my masters degree forces me to focus my priorities. Thanks Bill! I am glad you are back at the blog. Keep up the good work.

Unfortunately the internet is a wonderful place for people to anonymously say what they cannot say in public.
But by reacting to it I think we only feed the trolls and make them win.
Compared to what people leave behind in the PI and mynorthwest.com forums, this is nothing. Go through those comments someday, and the mean people here will look like saints.
Anyway, putting moderation in place is not a bad idea - you can approve comments every hour or so?

I say feel free to censor the obnoxious, personal attack and racial comments from the blog. Let people be able to report the bad to a special email address or do it yours selves if you see it.
That way you and other site contributors don't have to be baby sitting watching for a problem 24-7.
I don't enjoy the attacks regardless of who is being attacked. Make your opionion known but don't be insulting to your fellow reader and those running this site.

Compared to other sites, the class of comments on Seahawk Addicts is actually quite high. That is one of the things that keeps me reading and posting here.
I can emphasize with Bill being exasperated about that garbage being aimed at him. But at the same time, I don't let a couple of idiots spoil my enjoyment of the site.
Whatever SA does to keep those idiots posting to a minimum, I think that you guys do a pretty good job. But I hope Bill T, and others can keep it in perspective, and not let a few malcontents spoil everything. If that happens, the "terrorists" win.

I look forward to reading your pieces tomorrow!

You guys should get a hold of Dave Cameron over at the Mariners blog http://ussmariner.com/ and talk to them about moderating this site. They are pretty diligent and can be over the top with deleting comments. But in all, it's a free of a lot of spammers and trolls.

Welcome back!
Although I don’t always agree with your point of view, and at times other writers, I completely agree that personal attacks HAVE NO PLACE here. I for one, truly appreciate the insight that you, Chris, and the other writers put forth here. If someone does not like your work – the answer is simple – don’t read it!
Keep this in the back of your mind next time someone feels the need to take a personal swing at you or any other writer here - they must have penis envy and are closet 49er fans!
Glad to have you back and looking forward to your future articles!

The a-holes are banned when possible, but it's an IP ban so if they have dynamic IP addresses it's a bust. We request people register, but don't block people from commenting if unregistered. The reason for that is that too many of our favorite voices on here don't want to register. Steve S. has been one of my favorite commenters, largely because he never agrees with me (ha!) and always adds a lot to the discussion. He dropped off the site before when we required registration.
Basically, we're trying to strike a balance. It's tough, but Dave Cameron does do a pretty good job. The main thing is that we don't want to quash voices just because they disagree with us or have one off-handed remark. Still working on it.

No doubt, I understand this blog thing can be a full time job that doesn't pay a dime. Over at USSMariner, I believe they have several trusted members that have moderator rights. But it's people they trust and know and they don't abuse their privilege as a moderator.
Trust me though, I totally understand how frustrating these trools are. No take me the wrong way, I absoleutely love your site here.

It's frustrated me for a long time that many more than "one person" have attacked you personally because you were an optimistic fan. The fact that you wanted to look at the bright side of things and believe the best of your football team that you were a fan of drove some "negative" people nuts. Because you tempered their criticism of Ruskell, which let's face it grew way past the point of being logical to someplace where he had never done a single good deed in his life or ever made an even remotely mediocre draft or fa move and was most likely Dick Cheney and Lucifer's love child.
I often grew frustrated because you seemed to be the target of people being pissed off the Hawks had two bad years and you dared to still be hopeful and be a FAN. People can be whatever kind of fan they like, but I personally appreciate and would imagine players would appreciate when lots of crap went wrong that you are still rooting for THEM. Same for the coaches. And maybe even the front office.
There's a time to part ways and to trade players, fire coaches, gm, etc. And as fans who invest in a team we have a right to bitch and moan when we think things could be done better.
But to continue to take things so personally just because someone is optimistic and wants to give someone the benefit of the doubt more or to not ignore what successes they've had, particularly when BillT probably agreed with some of what was being said, just not to the full extent, and then to attack him personally because of it on a fan site...
This speaks much more to the people attacking him then to BillT. The fact that he grew more defensive over time (a long time of it) is completely understandable. I've seen the comments on SA grow more personal and negative in general over the last year, maybe because it was such a shitty year on the field. But it has turned me off some and while I still appreciate the Hawk news and most of the fans here, I've avoided the comments section for the most part. Life's too short to listen to someone criticize something that you are really excited about too much. Especially, in Bill's case, when that criticism extends to you.
This comment was extra long in honor of BillT. Welcome back.

Second, I agree with your attempt to decrease personal attacks. Personal attacks have no place in good discussions.
Third. It's unlikely that it's only personal attacks that are upsetting you if you are a human being like the rest of us. We all love to be right and hate to be wrong about our favorite things. When someone does a good job of showing us to be wrong about something we love, we tend to not handle it well. It causes anger, denial, fights, and, well, personal attacks. This we should deal with ourselves. We have to realize that accurate criticism is a gift and if we get angry when it happens, we are in the wrong, not the person that gave the criticism.
I'm not singling you out for this third thing, other than the fact that by doing this blog you will be wrong sometimes and you will sometimes get criticism that is devastating to your arguments. And it will hurt unless you are much more of a perfect human being than most of us.
written by BW, January 14, 2010
So if I get the gist from your third point, though you say you're not singling BillT out on this, you are saying by posting this here and now while addressing him that it was BillT who was doling out the "anger, denial, fights, and, well, personal attacks." All because he was proved wrong.
God forbid that two football fans can have differing opinions, neither right nor wrong, or maybe even both wrong, or both partly right, many over a hypothetical that can never be proven.
I don't think BillT minded people disagreeing with him at all. He might write you a novel in response, but rarely did I see bad will attached.
written by BillT, January 14, 2010
Someone criticizing your thoughts and ideas is one thing. Leaving comments that attack the poster themsleves not the content of his "offending idea" or worse not even bothering to respond to the topic serve no purpose.
My problem is that I have friends and family who read this blog. Would you want to have your children, spouse, and good friends reading the blog and have guys referencing you sucking a certain part of someone's anatomy (except spelled out plainly and graphically)? Be honest.
My daughter was ashamed to have me writing for a place where no one stood up for me and where posters got away with degrading me personally. Would ESPN expect Sando to take that kind of abuse and allow posters to level vulgar comments directly at him? You never see disrespectful comments directed at Sando on the NFC West blog so I assume that answer to be "no".
At least he gets paid to write his blog. I get to be abused for free. The issue is about disrespect not simply disagreeing with the content of my writings. That comes with the territory especially if you write thought provoking material like I do. Having personal abuse heaped on doesn't though.
Thanks for your vote of confidence and to all others who posted. We're all in this together so we all need to remain vigilant and let posters who attack our regular members and guests know their conduct is unacceptable behavior.

I have always enjoyed your articles and though I don't always agree, I do appreciate your perspective. This site is about our mutual addiction to our Seahawks. The more I know or learn about the Seahawks through the multiple perspectives that this site presents, the more I am able to appreciate the different intricacise of the Seahawks and football.
I am glad that you are back.

Thanks for coming back! I can't say I love the contests but your (and Chris', and everyone else's) love of OUR Seahawks should mean that we all keep it together...
I've watched this team as long as I can remember (literally, I'm 36), and everything that goes with it (ground Chuck, Flores, Erickson and Saint Mike) I typically fly in, read the updates and go on with my busy life. I just finished reading about your "return" and it made me want to take a minute to finally register and share with you how much I appreciate your contributions.
Thanks and keep your head up! You are very much appreciated,
Roger

My third point above is about what I've also seen here and elsewhere, where you (and others) seem to feel hurt and personally attacked when you haven't been, when instead you have had strong criticisms of one of your ideas.
Field Gulls is a good example of a place where people are systematically censured and banned for lack of respect for the ideas of John Morgan. It's the only way he can maintain his aura of expertise, because he's not an expert at all. It makes that site largely a joke. It's the last place anyone should go for the truth about what's going on with the Seahawks. Go there for entertainment if you have to, not truth.
I'm not singling you out as someone who is particularly sensitive, you're not. I just don't want this place to turn into a joke like Field Gulls with suck-up discussions and people with effective criticism being banned because they make some of the poster's ideas look silly.
