The Seahawks have placed the franchise tag designation on K Olindo Mare. Thanks to Tom for the heads up; here is the announcement on the official Seahawks Twitter feed, and a link that (I think) Steve found from Brian McIntyre's football blog here.

This is a great move by the Seahawks, and pretty much a no-brainer. None of the other UFAs could have even been under serious consideration for the tag, and $2.x million is not an unreasonable amount to pay for a stud kicker like Olindo Mare who has been lights out the past two seasons. I actually read somewhere that he put together the two best consecutive years by a Seahawks kicker in the team's history, but I'm not certain that's true. He'd be right up there.

This is also a nice move in that it locks up one of our strengths for another year, but without some silly contract that you don't want an aging kicker getting extended until he's 40+ years old. The Hawks locked up Pro Bowl alternate Punter Jon Ryan earlier in the offseason, so if we can get some even average coverage teams on the field (we were bottom-five bad last year), we should be okay for special teams, especially if there is an upgrade in the returner slots.

I hope so! Mare deserves it and he would be the only one I can see the Hawks applying the tag too!

This was the right move and not really a big surprise. Glad we have Mare for at least another year.

I'm happy with this move. It makes sense to me. He's been one of the few bright spots the last two years.

He outlasted Mora as well.

Wow I really didn't expect this move to happen, but I'm glad he is staying around regardless. He is top 3 at kickoffs and deadly accurate under 50 yards.

Special team coverage guys is a huge need this offseason. Hopefully we get a decent return man as well.

Great....now we get to continue hearing Dick Stockton call him Olindo Mar-AA!

Anyway, glad we are keeping him. Decent FG kicker and really like the depth on his kickoffs.

Remember, if the cap goes, we still have two transition tags we could use as the new rules for an uncapped year give each team an extra tag and the right to use all three so if we needed to do it, we could lock up a couple more players. All in all, a great move that still leaves the team with flexibility and two more tags should we need them. Kudos to the new regime so far.

With Ryan and Mare back again, at least we're going to KICK ass next season (or at least the football). smilies/cheesy.gif

Agreed. We are well positioned to do a lot of premium punting because we can't make enough first downs. And since we can't get it into the end zone after that rare takeaway, at least we'll come away with three points.

Or at least that how it was last year.

Let's hope Ryan is not as busy as he was last year. And here's hoping that Mare spends most of his time kicking off and putting through extra points.
