The NFL Scouting Combine begins in earnest on Saturday, and there's a whole lot of people the Seahawks need to be looking at. I thought I'd give a brief look at give of those guys today, and maybe keep the trend going through this week. Let's start with the secondary:

  1. Taylor Mays - Obviously; while there isn't a whole lot for Carroll to scout with Mays, you should be watching how he performs at the Combine. If he doesn't live up to expectations, he could really free fall since few people think he could cover a barbecue with a tarp let alone an NFL receiver. Mays could jump back into the first round this week, or he could plummet to the third.
  2. Javier Arenas - Coming from Alabama, Arenas is pretty much a known quantity. He's a solid cornerback and an above average kick returner, two things that the Seahawks need. Unfortunately, he's tiny -- only 5'9" -- so it's unlikely that he could be looked at too hard by the Seahawks unless they view him as superior to Josh Wilson, which he isn't. Still, he'll be fun to watch.
  3. Morgan Burnett - A safety out of Georgia Tech, Burnett would profile as a solid strong safety for the Seahawks. He needs to run in the 4.5s on his 40-yard dash to prove that he can really cover tight ends and the occasional slot receiver or his draft stock is in trouble. We all look at Mays and of course Eric Berry, but they both profile more as free safeties because of their speed. Burnett could be worth looking at.
  4. Joshua Moore - A cornerback from Kansas State listed on Chad Reuters "who will rise" article, Moore could sneak into the earlier rounds despite coming from a small school that no one watches since Josh Freeman left. He's fast and fluid, and could climb up draft boards. More importantly, he's 5'11".
  5. Eric Berry / Joe Haden - the consensus best safety and consensus best corner, both of them can only hurt their draft stock. If they put up good numbers, good interviews, and don't get injured, they'll be fine. Both should be fun to watch, especially Berry who is surprisingly fluid for a safety.
Who are you watching?

I really want to see how Myron Rolle does especially considering his year off from football. He was considered a first round talent before he was awarded the Rhodes scholarship and took a year off to study at Oxford. He would be an absolute steal in round 3 or 4 if we were to land him. Combine Rolle with Haden, Donovan Warren or Brandon Ghee and our secondary has the potential to be something special. We need secondary help, espcially in the NFC West.

We all know Mays will blow up the combine, I see him as being this years Vernon Davis or Vernon Gholston. I personally think that no matter what he does in the combine will matter to most teams since he is such a limited player. I personally think he will be moved to weakside linebacker by some team. You can't teach natural insticts and he is sadly lacking there. If only you can put Eric Berry brain in Mays body...
Out of those...

... Six guys, I will be watching Berry for sure. If only to see if he has stayed in shape and with focus.

Of the Potential picks up there that I am interested in seeing at the combine... Well, I would like to see how Burnett does out of GT. Interesting guy to look forward to...

Charlie Brown

If Brown from USC doesn 't improve himself at the combine, it may be worth keeping our powder dry for our OT untill pick #40.

We could then take a QB at #6; BPA at 14; then Brown at #40. We can't expect to pick up an OT later then #40, but those 3 picks would make for a solid initial draft for Carroll and Co.

If the later rounds get us at least couple of players that contribute, then we've done well.

Football-tiny guy who played WR and then RB for the past two years. For small, very fast, an intriguing prospect.
Another Option.

We could get our OT at 6 or 14, BPA at the other first round position, then take a guy like QB LeFloure at #40.

Then it would be time to release Seneca Wallace and let the two young QB prospects compete to see who will eventually replace Matt Hasselbeck. We have yet to see Teel in action; suppose he is the real deal? We have seen Wallace in action, and last season it wasn't pretty.

I keep asking, why don't we hear about Teel?
...

Montana, because he hasn't played (other than practice) since the pre season, where he looked pretty good against scrubs. My guess would be that if we don't draft a QB early, they think Teel may be the guy...I haven't seen enough of him to say. but if they think he's the guy, I'm ok with that until Teel proves otherwise...Remember Hass's first run at QB? (yikes)
Personally, I want to look at that S out of Texas (forget his name)

It's hard to narrow it down to 5. Here are players I'm interested in watching at the combine. I think they all fit Seahawks' needs or are interesting players because they can develop into great players.

S - Myron Rolle
RB - Ryan Mathews/Montario Hardesty
OT - Selvish Capers/Jared Veldheer
DE - Jason Pierre Paul/Carlos Dunlap
WR - Jordan Shipley/Carlton Mitchell

Is it just me or does this strike anyone as a weak DE class? Every DE has huge question marks surrounding them and there really is no clear cut leader of the pack.

Morgan is my favorite, but is very inconsistant.

JPP had 1 mediorce NCAA season, and hes being talked of as a top 10 pick. Not to mention he played opposite an all american DE, yet still failed to produce. Really?

Dunlap is a moron (got a DUI) and a classic underacheiver, on a talented defense no less.

Hardy has an injury history and possibly some conditioning issues.

I think DE is an area we need a huge upgrade in, but I just don't see it happining this year. This class of DEs is not a very good one IMO.

Detroit is shopping the 2nd pick, according to NFL.com. Perhaps if the Rams pass on Clausen for Bradford, we may move up to take him before Washington drafts. Maybe this is where Burleson and/or Branch can finally have some value for a trade

Carroll will want to make his mark on the team, and I'm sure QB is at the top of his list as this franchise moves foward. I'm sure he views Clausen as the one that got away, since he tried to recruit him out of high school to attend USC.

With Taylor Mays, the issue isnt how fast he runs a 40, or anything else (excepting the psych tests) at the Combine: Its whether or not he's really a future great NFL football player, or just another work-out wonder like Mike Mamula or Vernon Gholston. Everyone knows what a physical freak specimen he is. So who cares what he does at the combine?! The question of whether or not he has the instincts to play S in the NFL wont be answered at the Combine.

And there's simply no way he plays FS in the NFL despite his straight-line speed: He isnt enough of a ball-Hawk, he isnt agile enough, and he gets beat too often for anyone to want him as thier last defense. He's a SS.

I will be shocked if Seattle drafts him even at 14 or 40. And disgusted.

Arenas?! Are you kidding me?! Ruskell has left the building people! Lil' Javier is 5'-9" tall! 'Nuff said!

As for Burnett and Moore--I will be watching Myron Rolle more than them. And I wouldnt be surprised to see Seattle take Haden or Berry if they are there. Not sure how I feel about Berry since Thomas will be available later, but I wouldnt mind having Haden opposite Tru with Wilson as nickel back.

I hope we get Pierre Paul at 6, best OL at 14, and maybe Mathews or Best at 40. Since Leonard Weaver went to the pro bowl as a UFA, I wonder if we will get a decent compensatory pick for him? I pretty sure that is one of the criteria for those selections.

Yes, Mays is a SS without question.

Stils-

I'm also interested in watching Veldheer and Capers, along with Fox and Wang. I still think we take 2 LT prospects this year with one being in the mid-rounds and these are the guys I think have promise.

Slave-

I agree, no Arenas. I'm done with the midget DB's and no matter how good they are (i.e. Wilson), they just don't cut it against the likes of Fitz, Boldin, Crabtree, etc. and that's the trend of WR's in the NFL, especially in the NFC West. Tiny DB's like this are becoming a dying breed more and more.

Omar-

We won't trade up to get a QB for 2 reasons: 1) Schneider tries to trade back to maximize picks, not lose them and, 2) at #6 we have too many options at great players in positions of need to have to trade up.

I toatally agree about the DE class. All 1st round prospects have too many question marks for me. Morgan is inconsistant and fades into the background against top end LT's, Dunlap's a thug and obviously makes poor decisions at the worst time, and JPP is just too small... period. In my opinion, Reed is the same type of guy JPP is, maybe a couple inches taller and 10 lbs heavier, but Reed was a stud at UofO and his size made him an UFA. It seems to me that the 2-4 round guys are where the value is unless someone falls later in the 1st.

CTS,

Yea I know, I'm not really expecting a trade up and I know its very unprobable. Just speculation, nothing more.

Anyone know what Myron Rolle's 40 time is? I've seen it listed as low as a 4.43 to as high as a 4.80. If anyone has heard anything from a reliable source I'd be glad to hear it.

One place had him listed at a 4.75 another showed 4.59. Not too sure how accurate those are, but either aren't impressive and about a .1 of a second behind where he needs to be at least.

If you want to buy a car, you will have to get the personal loans. Moreover, my brother always uses a car loan, which supposes to be really useful.
