You're pretty bright. I'm not here to patronize you. You know as well as anyone else how important the week one game vs. San Francisco is. You know how important week one is for every NFL team. You know how crucial every divisional game is this year. You know, you know, you know. So, I won't dwell on a lot of those things.
But the Week One match-up versus San Francisco? Whoa. That's a big game.

Football is a game of war (George Carlin bit, so NSFW language). Coming out strong is huge, winning every battle is ideal but winning the first battle is crucial. More importantly, if the lowly Seahawks can come out and defeat the media favorite 49ers it sets us up for a potential to get some serious momentum going early on in the season. With momentum and "stolen wins" (since we won't be favored in that game), a mediocre team can become more than that. This team had no confidence last year, but when would they have gotten it? They really had one good win -- a Jaguar blowout -- followed immediately by laying an egg against the Cardinals and essentially ending any chances of making the playoffs.
But this year's schedule is different. Imagine if the Seahawks beat the 49ers. They are 1-0. They then travel to play an injury-ridden Denver team, where they should have a good chance to win. 2-0. Next, we travel home to take on the Chargers, which is an unlikely victory, but it is possible with a young RB in Ryan Mathews and a team missing their top WR in Vincent Jackson (who will be suspended if he's on the team, or off the team if he's traded). The Chargers typically start off fairly slow, to boot. An away game against the Rams should be a win. There is, with a victory against the 49ers, a good chance that we enter the Bye week 3-1 or even 4-0.
Oh, and we'd almost certainly be at the top of the NFC West. The 49ers would have a Loss vs us, then they play New Orleans at home, Kansas City away, Atlanta away, Eagles at home. They could legitimately be 1-4 at that point. The Cardinals don't have it too much easier. They should beat the Rams, then play ATL away, Oakland at home, San Diego away, New Orleans at home. They could very well be 2-3 or 3-2 there. So, this division is not out of reach. Must. Win. Week. One!
