The Seahawks have today signed former 49er receiver Brandon Jones to an undisclosed one-year deal.

Jones becomes the second ex-49er in a week to be signed in Seattle; the first being 2008 first-round pick Kentwan Balmer. Much like Balmer, however, Jones will likely not have a huge role with the team -- at first, anyway. The team isn't as receiver-needy as it once was, given the emergence of Mike Williams and Deon Butler. (Sorry, Tate, step it up), so the acquisition of Jones could mean someone is about to be released. My first thought would be Deion Branch, but his chemistry with Matt Hasselbeck could be his saving grace at this point.

Jones caught 41 balls in 2008 with the Titans, but only hauled in a single reception as a 49er in 2009. That's concerning, though Pete Carroll would've passed on him had he not shown anything during his workout. It'll be interesting to see what happens this week, and how much playing time Jones gets next weekend in Minnesota.

hmmm, not really getting this move, but Pete is continuing to look at everythiing. I hope they are looking for OT's as well!

Damn, this team has alot of receivers.I am very curious what the 53 man roster will look like.Okung should be back for the opener.Sprained ankles take about 10-14 days to heel.I dont know much about Brandon Jones but i trust Pete and company know what they are doing.I wish Aaron Curry would stop wearing those goofy ass white socks he looks lost out there and that worries me a bit.I know he can crush guys but he needs to step up a bit.I dont know why Carroll is slow playing Tate.I hope they are just saving him for the season and keeping him under the radar as a receiver.

I agree. I just don't get this move. We have a bunch of receivers better than Jones. I also don't get why Tate is getting such a small window of opportunity in the games so far. I really hope he sees some time with the first team this week or next. Sounds like he's had. A great camp. I'd like to see him some more.

When I first heard of Jones visiting the Seahawks, I dismissed it as unlikely. I figured that even if he had spent all last year injured/benched, he had enough starting experience and untapped potential (enough so that I drafted him in fantasy one year - oops!) that he could find a better gig than competing for a 6th WR spot in Seattle.

Now he decides to sign in Seattle over Minnesota and Oakland. Assuming that Jones and his agent are rational, that means that he believes he has a better chance of beating out one of Housh/Branch/Williams/Butler/Tate/Obomanu than the Vikings group of Rice/Harvin/Berrian/Lewis/Taye Biddle/Ray Small or the Raiders group of Murphy/Heyward-Bey/Schilens/Higgins/Todd Watkins/Jacoby Ford. I really hope that this is a reflection of Carroll guaranteeing that he gets a fair shake, rather than an assessment of the Seahawks WR corps as being easier to break into than the other two.

He has been more productive than Obamanu during his career. He averages about 20 receptions and 300 yards.

Obomanu sticks around due to Special Teams ability, and the fact that he can competently (as a backup) man ALL three WR positions. Who knows why Jones signed with us? But you can bet Caroll gives him a shot.

As for Tate and his lack of playing time, I think its due to his struggles with the mental aspect of the game--running the wrong route occasionally--and his struggles with route-running. Its ok in practice, but in games a mistake like that is deadly.

Butler had an even harder time adjusting as a rookie last year. Tate looks to be the best rookie we've had since Darrel Jackson and Koren Robinson. I expect we'll see a lot of him against the Raiders.

For now, the best WR's are Housh, Williams, Butler, Branch, in that order. Branch has an edge on Butler due to experience and route-running. Tate will be worked in behind those guys to start the season, but he'll have the chance to move up as his understanding of the game improves. Especially if Housh or Branch are traded/cut.

For a change, we have depth at WR. Otherwise, Tate would be playing more. Now if only we could trade Branch for a decent aging RG, C, or RT....

Injuries
written by Patches Pal, August 23, 2010
Unlike the Broncos and Seahawks teams in the recent past we have so far avoided the major injury. Willis is out with a knee that needs orthoscopic surgery. He should only miss a few weeks. Okung looks like he will be back sooner rather than later. Pitts and Washington are coming off major injuries. The key to any teams success is keeping your guys on the field. PC seems to be doing a good job so far of lightening the workload in camp to keep guys from unnecessary injury.

Pitts and Hamilton give us veteran depth in the O Line. Vallos, Willis and Wrotto have all be around a while. Gibbs seems to be able to get the most from his talent so the offensive line may not be a big a problem as it seems to some who are basing their opinion on last years performance.

Something is going on here. We know the top 6 WRs are, in order, Housh, Williams, Branch, Butler, Tate and Ben O.

We know they will keep Tate and Williams. It's too early to give up on Butler. Housh has looked solid, Branch has had a great camp, Ben contributes in a lot of ways. So why bring in Brandon Jones?

Just to give him a look in case of injuries? That makes no sense, as soon as we cut him, MN or Oakland picks him up or some other team.

The only answer is that he will make the team .... which means one of the current top 6 won't.

In turn, we can all agree that Williams, Tate and Ben probably make the squad. So, options:

1. Cut Butler? Makes no sense, the kid has to have more potential than Jones.

2. Trade Branch? No value, likely only a 6th or 7th.

3. Cut Branch? Possible, I suppose but unlikely.

4. Trade Housh? This is my guess - trade Housh for defensive help. Trade for and sign Vincent Jackson, release Brandon Jones after Jackson's suspension is over.

Knowing AJ in SD to be a shrewd bastard, he probably only has interest in Housh (minimal), Butler and Tate. I dont want to lose Butler or Tate. Housh I could care less about as he isnt fast enough to cry over.

But our WR corps is in far better shape than our O-line. I cant believe Caroll and company are happy to go into the season with Ruskells retread nobody backups plus Chester Pitts. We seem to have a desperate need for some O-lineman, not another troubled WR.

Wouldnt it be great to trade Hill and Housh for Jackson? Even if it cost us a fourth rounder it would be ok. I like Housh, and Im not a fan of WR's who have yet to top 1200 yards and want $30 million guaranteed despite having multiple DUI's, but I could see the logic: Housh is old and waaay overpaid: Jackson will be young and waaay overpaid lol!

Jones had value just for knowing what the Whiners are up to on offense. He may just hang around through camp, just for the chance to get on tape for other teams to see. Im not sure how many teams wanted him. Hard to say, time will tell.

On a happy note, the Cardinals look pretty awful tonight, especially their offense. There is in fact a good chance they step back some this season and the Hawks can take advantage. I have to think Jones needs to thorough;y impress over these next 2 weeks or he is no more than competition and special teams addition.

41 catches for Tennessee is solid, and I will guarantee he can block with the best of them coming from Oklahoma and trying to keep ahead of Chris Johnson's 400 touches a year.

And there just ain't any Oline available on the market when everyone has 80 guys on their roster. Schneider might very well be stockpiling trade bait for a few of the undervalued ZBS-built linemen on the bubble for the power man-blocking teams. Who are an injury or 2 away from dumping future Hall of Famers in their prime for our scrubs.

Hey, it could happen, right, Timmay!?
