I am still in some shock right now but Adam Caplan is reporting that CB Josh Wilson has just been traded to the Baltimore Ravens for an undisclosed draft pick. I have to admit that I didn't see that coming.

(Update) The undisclosed draft pick is now a conditional 5th round draft pick in the 2011 draft. The Seahawks have also confirmed the move.

Liz Matthews of 710 ESPN stated on her Twitter page that Josh Wilson was just practicing (30 minutes ago) with the team in preparations for the Raiders game this Thursday.

I just saw this on the Trib website. Wow! I thought maybe Josh would be involved in a trade soon but was hoping for a decent RB in return. A conditional 5th isn't all bad and we must really have faith in the emergence of Walther Thurmond and Roy Lewis. They look promising but are not experienced and established like J Dubs. Oh well, I think the busy day today at Hawks HQ is a prelude of things to come this weekend!

Have to think that Carroll and Shneider know more about football than I do. My gut reaction is anger but I guess we are pretty deep there. Thurmond is more physical and Roy Lewis is too good just to cut. But why know babineux. Different position but dang. They should have thrown in McGahee

The first thing that comes to my mind is how open Carroll has been about wanting bigger CB's. I suspect this plays a huge role in their decision. Not to mention that he has also been very open about how high he is on Thurmond. I suspect he expects Thurmond to take over the starting position at some point this season, but the ACL concerns me. Jennings just can't be the guy. Hmm... still a bit dumbfounded by this move.
Shocking
written by Billy Showbiz, August 31, 2010
I have no idea why they would have done this. Josh has been one of the few bright spots for the Hawks over the past couple of seasons. Who knows, maybe he was more of a coverage liability than we knew but he sure seemed like a pretty good corner with a bright future to me.

I agree, Wilson was our returner. This move has to be because we need another draft pick to deal in trade. That said Wilson was either on a big play or really bad on his coverage, Usually he would average 5 really bad coverage plays and then make up for it by having 1 big play. Wilson was definantly not consistant so maybe that's what they were looking at.

He was too small for Carroll I dont think Jennings has any trade value so we are stuck with him. He probably wont see much action this season. Or maybe the coaches are happy with him who knows. They are the ones that have their names on the line right.
A 5th? Nice...

I like this move, Jennings obviously doesn't have trade value and it's nice to see we got a 5th rounder for him. Not bad at all...more draft picks gives a team huge trade advantages. Plus I love Thurmond...More positive moves Pete!

Babineaux is probably going to be cut.

Jennings will probably stick, to the dismay of many Seahawks fans.

I'm now at a point where I will just wait for the dust to settle, if ever, and see how this final 53 plus 7 PS guys shakes down. Still love the Polumbus trade of only a 2012 late rounder and the Leroy Hill salary reduction moves from earlier, even if I am not on board fully with the Wilson deal.

I'm really not a fan of the wilson deal. I didn't expect him to be our starter, but I sure as hell would rather see him than Jennings. I have to say that Jennings has always looked good on plays until the ball gets within 10 yards of him and a receiver and then he finds a way to fall down or suddenly get out of position. I just don't get it. I don't even care that Jennings has no trade value. He should have been cut two years ago!

Congrats on making the team, Lewis. You might even start.

Funny, I'd just written my brother this morning that Wilson was one of the 3 Seahawks most overrated by fans, along with Carlson and Hawthorne. Seahawk Steve has the reason correct - for every highlight reel play Wilson made, he also blew a coverage. Still better than Jennings, who doesn't blow coverage as much, but still gets beaten when he plays correct coverage.

It looks like the staff considered Jennings and Wilson both nickel backs in an ideal situation, and there was only room for one. On the other hand, where I was mentioning in a past post that someone like Rob Sims doesn't fit the OL so you might has well trade him and try to build chemistry with a new guy, I don't think chemistry applies as much to the secondary where you can just plug in a guy and run with it. So while Wilson may not be a good fit against the big WRs in the division, I don't see a compelling case to trade him *now*. Only exception is if the additional pick at their disposal frees up a pick to trade for someone else now as well...

This might be a sign of Scot McCloughan making his mark on the team. He's always been a guy who's more about size and speed - not to the extreme that Al Davis is, but definitely on the opposite side of the spectrum from Ruskell.
This is ridiculous

You build a team by developing players and stockpiling picks. Wilson, at 5-9 is too short for PC. I don't like short CB's either. We have depth at the position so why not get someone back rather than cut one of our guys. Lewis and Thurmond are keepers and can fill in for Wilson. We will get an extra 4th out of this as he should play alot for the Ravens. That will take the sting out of the 3rd we lost for Whitehurst. This time of year with so many guys being cut it is hard to get much more.

written by MonroeCoug, August 31, 2010
doesn't like short corners, Thurmond and Lewis are playing well and Josh is a UFA at the end of the year. If you can get value now I don't have a huge issue with it.

On that note - if all of the currently hurt OL are back in a week or two there is a huge log jam. If they really like Polumbus and he is not just a body to get through a week or two I would expect to see a trade of Locklear. Just a hunch.

Jennings to start...... (sigh)
Not sure I get it, but.......
written by Ozmo07, August 31, 2010
...at this point I feel like I need to allow for more than one off-season and a few pre-season games before I start to second guess decisions made by guys who are closer to the field and far smarter than me when it comes to NFL personnel decisions.

That stated, I've never really understood the Kelly Jennings issue. My thoughts have evolved (absent something better to consider) to include the idea that perhaps we've kept Jennings on as a move to ensure we can provide press coverage should Vern Troyer ever decide to take up a second career as a WR.

But despite my cynicism regarding Jennings, the Kool-Aid still tastes appropriately sweet, and so with that, I'll have another glass. The Seahawks have been a bad team for a few years now; perhaps I should give the guys taking over a chance to make the changes they feel necessary to make things right.

With this and Hill's pay cut another thing to consider is that they are creating cap space for a big name player. I know it's an upcapped year, but you have to plan ahead too.

I heard Huard talking about Housh and he didn't say he thought he'd would get cut, he said he wouldn't be surprised if it did. When asked about the comment by Huard, Clayton stated that he wouldn't be totally surprised, but that it was unlikely.

I just don't see the value in cutting Housh. He has trade value still in him. He did have 79 receptions for 911 yards on a horrible offense. SD may be interested with the emergence of Floyd.

Hard to tell with this new staff. I'll be crossing my fingers that the planets will align and we make a play for Revis. Wilson gone, clearing up cap space, NY could have some interest in Hill. How about Hill and our 1st for Revis and a fat contract. I can dream...

Wilson has been the best thing about out D backfield the last couple years. His overall performance has been solid. He was an asset. We did not get compensated high enough for him. So I guess Pete Carroll and Shneider know how to buy the right thing at the right price. The trick to selling anything is to get more than what its worth. Not less. Ravens are hurtin in D backfield. Fair Market Value
written by JoeinKirkland, August 31, 2010
I've been generally optimistic about the moves that Schnieder and Pete have made. However, I don't get this one. Isn't his value likely to go up after the first game of the season when teams that are hurting in the secondary but view themselves as contenders get toasted. Heck, maybe they even have another injury to make them even more desperate?
When Schneider used Randy Moss and the 4th rounder NE gave up for him as an example of fair market value, I wanted to puke. Moss was a malcontent and a trouble maker and it was his behavior and NE really not knowing which Randy Moss they were going to get that lowered his value. We gave up the equivalent of two 3rd round picks for Charlie Whitehurst. Is he worth more than two Randy Moss's? Of course not. It is all about supply and demand. I would have loved to get a 3rd round pick in next year's draft to replace what we gave up for Charlie. Couldn't they have at least gotten a 4th that could turn into a 3rd?
I will miss Wilson...but
written by Davis Hsu, August 31, 2010
Josh is an exciting player and I met him a few times- a really nice guy. That being said- the front office obviously made a decision that after this year they would not resign him as he would be an UFA.

Josh believes that he is a STARTING corner in the NFL and he is- on bad teams or teams thin at CB. In reality he is a GOOD nickle corner and we were not going to pay him top dollar. He was going to walk.

The players they will need to resign after 2010 will likely be: Mike Williams and/or Brandon Mebane. I believe they are both unrestricted. (Leon Washington and Matt too, but I think Mebane and BMW more valuable and younger.

A lot of freakin' out tonight. I like Wilson but and I am not sure he is really worth the amount of freaking out that is going on. In most teams he would be a back up, he doesn't meet the CB prototype we want especially in NFC west, we have other good return specialists, we have good young CB's, he was on the last year of his contract, we got at least a 5th round draft choice, probably a 4th round, we are rebuilding a team. For all the hate against Jennings (he had one bad year) I think him and Wilson are similar: decent backups, who were probably drafted higher then there worth in the first place. Give it up lets move on. Go Thurmond! Go HAWKS.

Comparing this trade to the Moss trade is dumb. You can't really equate a trade that had a huge salary as the Moss contract in the salary cap era to a guy not making a lot of money in the non-salary cap era. The Raiders needed cap room and the Pats needed that one player to get them to a super bowl. This is neither of those situations.
Absolutely terrible.
written by Sourhawk, September 01, 2010
There is no justification for this trade. If the FO liked Thurmond so much, then start him at CB2 and keep Wilson at Nickel. He is a lethal pick 6 threat and a good tackler.

If you want to complain about Wilson being 5'9, then tell me why Jennings is still on this team. He's the same size as Wilson, only much slower, and actually terrible.

This is worse than the Tapp trade. Our FO loves to undervalue our own players. It makes me sick.

Moss established the market value? Hardly. How about trading a 1st for Branch? Morons.

Wow. My issue with the trade is that I didn't see it as needing to be made – if we really wanted to, we could find a way to keep 5 cornerbacks this year. And it does hurt us this year, but I don't think it's a difference that'll cost us a playoff spot.

I don't think getting a 4th/5th back for Wilson is a ripoff. Wilson is a starter when you don't have a great group of CB's, but we would rather he be the nickel back. He's pretty decent, we like the way he plays, but he has flaws. Carroll/Schneider aren't the only ones thinking this. Ruskell wouldn't have brought in Ken Lucas last year and immediately inserted him as starter if he felt Wilson was a sure thing.

You've got to realize that DB's don't get traded for much. Here's a list from the last 2 years:
-2-time Pro Bowler Lito Sheppard was traded for a 2009 5th rounder and a conditional 2010 pick that was never realized.
-Ellis Hobbs, regular starter and good kick returner, was traded in 2009 for 2 2009 5th rounders.
-Last year's Pro Bowl alternate Sheldon Brown and part-time LB starter Chris Gocong were traded for a 4th and 5th rounder in 2010 and special teamer LB Alex Hall.
-Regular starter Chris Houston was traded for a 2010 6th rounder and conditional 2011 7th.
-Former All Pro Antonio Cromartie was traded for a 2010 3rd round pick.
-Former All Pro Kerry Rhodes was traded for a 2009 4th round pick and a 2010 7th.

Josh Wilson is less accomplished than all of those guys at the time of trade, maybe with the exception of Houston. If you tell an objective observer (non-Seahawks, non-Ravens fan) that Wilson should've commands a 3rd rounder given those other data points, you'll get laughed at.

And it's hard to argue that you could've gotten more because Baltimore was desperate at the position. GM's generally don't make rash decisions like that, and if they do, they might get fired. It's a pity one example is our previous GM.

I love how Hawk fans always think our players require such high market value! How about people realize that Josh Wilson isn't a starting cornerback, his inconsistencies and height did play a factor...period. Ask yourself if you had a team today would you draft Josh Wilson as your starting CB? If you say yes, then I guess there is a reason why you are just another sour person sitting on your couch and not in the front office of a pro sports franchise. I'm glad there are some rational voices out there. I like JW, but he's an average at best CB when compared to the corners playing around the league. Only Seahawk fans are aware of the guy. Ask anyone else that follows the NFL who JW is and they would not have a clue. Fans overvalue their team's players all the time. You've got to think rationally. The guy was average at best and would have been gone in a year anyway. Glad we got something for him now.
