Just as improbable as Earl Thomas dropping to the Seahawks at No.14 overall Friday night, former Notre Dame WR Golden Tate didn't hear his name called until No.60 earlier tonight.
And Pete Carroll and John Schneider couldn't have been happier about it, but the chance didn't come without a fleeting moment of doubt.
Just before the Seahawks were on the clock, none other than Mike Holmgren traded picks to jump one spot in front of his former team in his first year as president of the Cleveland Browns, presumably to grab Tate. The Seahawks staff were soon breathing a sigh of relief, however, when Holmgren opted for QB Colt McCoy RB Montarrio Hardesty [ed. oops, he switched the picks up] instead.
"We were holding our breath for a minute," Seahawks scout Jason Barnes said afterward.
And rightfully so. The Browns have been in serious need of depth at wide receiver since losing Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets last year. The needs at quarterback outweighed those at wideout, however, with only Seneca Wallace, Jake Delhomme and Brett Ratliff currently on the roster. Not exactly a Pro Bowl trio of signal callers.
So the Seahawks were thrilled when they found Golden Tate available at No.60 overall. Tate had a huge season as a junior in 2009, catching 93 passes for 1,496 yards and 15 touchdowns. Many critics of QB Jimmy Clausen cited Tate as the reason for Clausen's seemingly-inflated stats, and judging by the fact that Clausen could've very well been chosen later than Tate, it would appear most teams listened to the critique.
But Tate should be an automatic difference-maker in a Seattle receiving corps that lost Nate Burleson in free agency and needs drastic improvement in consistency. Tate may also end up being a weapon in punt or kick returns, depending on what Pete Carroll decides. Tate also gives a great interview on how excited he is to be a Seahawk here.
As my old buddy Cousin Tam said earlier today: This could be the draft that we remember as saving the franchise.

I like Blount as a RB, Griffen at DE, it looks like there is some good CB still available too. What do you think?

Now to football. I think it might even be worth it to trade up from the 6th pick with the Lamb to take Griffen. He was rated as late 1st round talent.

He seems to be a very competitive guy so you know hes gonna be motivated about proving all those teams wrong. I can see him going on a Steve Smith type of rampage.

Seriously all you do is whine Hawkfan, it doesn't matter what the topic is all you do is complain about our all pro QB. We talk about the stadium and you come in to whine about Matt. We talk about our jerseys and you whine about Matt. We talk about our new coaching staff and you whine about Matt. You don't contribute to intelligent conversations in anyway.

Radem

He hits nearly as hard as Berry, is just as good if not better at being a ballhawk, and he even played well at cb against slot recievers.
He is widely considered the second best safety prospect since Ed Reed and Polamalu. Behind Eric Berry. And if he isnt great at FS, he has the speed, talent, and work ethic to be a fine starting cb, and he's taller and bigger and stronger than our own Josh Wilson.
Claussen sucks!
