The Seahawks have selected Golden Tate, WR from Notre Dame. He's a big time playmaker who is great after the catch, definitely fits the slot/Eddie Royal mold. I can't help but wonder if this means that the Seahawks might not be fond of Deon Butler... But I won't get ahead of myself. Tate won the Biletnikoff award last year for the best WR in College Football. We've learned that the award doesn't always amount to success, but it doesn't hurt his case.
This also might mean that the Seahawks are less concerned about the defensive end position than I am. Both Everson Griffen and Corey Wootton were available when we picked.
Update: this pick is being universally praised on Twitter. Schefter, LaCanfora, Peter King, Jerry Brewer, more have all come out in big support of it.

We needed to bolster our defensive line here. I was sure he was going to pick someone like Griffen.
Even with Thomas patroling the backffield, if we can't mount a pass rush, any NFL QB can just pick us apart. See last season. First mistake Carroll's made in my opinion.

I think Curry will be lined up outside quite a bit now...
written by JapanHawk, April 23, 2010
He will be great to fill in for Bobby Engram. he will help the Hawks move down the field, but maybe not so good in the endzone due to his lack of height. We have a ton of tall WR's to score us TD's when we are in the red zone.
We now have a playmaker on both sides of the ball and a vastly upgraded OL.

Never in a million years did I think we'd get him at 60. Im in shock. this is just awesome!
Ha! Billt got his LT, and the top rated one at that, I got a WR, and my favorite too! And we got the second best FS in about forever. All that with three picks?!
I dont think its hyperbole to say this is the best Seahawks draft EVER! I am even more thrilled than when we snagged Curry and Unger despite a trade down.

We still need a big strong fast WR, but Julio Jones next year anyone?!
We should be able to field three WR at a time that kick butt for any occasion now, between Housh, Branch, Butler, Tate, and The Williams Twins. Hass isnt going to make the team, Obo is done. I wish him luck but I never thought he'd last this long.
Tate will be productive, whether its at FL, the slot, or even at SE. He's fast enough to try out there anyway.
Did I say Whoohooo?! Whoooohoooo!

And how about having some faith in Carolls judgement like youre always harping on others to do?
There were some good defenders available, but none were as big a need as WR. Plus, Tate was talked about as a sure first rounder/upper second. Its amazing that someone with his talent and work ethic fell so far.
Im the last one to call for WR under 6' but this kid can really play.
He just may be the steal of the entire draft. And he should help immediately. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by his performance.
Besides that, the DT's available and the DE's would have taken a couple seasons to realy get onfield. DE is a position that often takes years even for first rounders to get it. And we have brought in several players to man the elephant position, so I don think Caroll and company see DE as big a need as many of us thought.
Anyway, brighten up. Tate should have gone higher, we needed him, and next year Im sure we take a DE/DT high. As well as Julio Jones.

There was no way we were gonna fix all the holes in one draft, but we're covering some serious ground!
I forgive them for Whitehurst now. I dont care if he totally busts, Im a happy Seahawks fan. If Butler ever pans out, discounting Ruskells crappy first rounders before Curry, this will make three straight years of excellent drafts.

written by Hawksince77, April 23, 2010
After the first round, there was no reason to reach at any position. BPA and maximizing the talent level was critical, and still is.
Yes, Seattle could have gone the entire draft without adding a WR (or a RB, TE, CB). Now they can get a strong safety in the 4th or 5th, a couple more o-linemen, a late round RB (Blount, Stafon Johnson) and they will be set to start the 2010 season.
More holes/upgrades can take place next draft or in FA.
written by Lenny James, April 23, 2010
He can play RB, WR, and return kicks. Tate at 60 was the steal of the draft. If Carroll passed on his former players, they might suck. D end is still a slight need but not so much if Curry can play the elephant role in the 3-4- hybrid Caroll is introducing. The Hawks will adress the D Line and a power RB in rd 4 and 5
written by whsie, April 23, 2010
I was actually hoping for Brown, but apparently he has some sort of medical issue that made him drop to the last pick of the 2nd round. As the reporters say, there is NO WAY he should have dropped that far.
written by BillT, April 23, 2010
I'm ok with Tate but I was so hoping we'd concentrate on fixing the foundations of the offense and defense first and then bring in the playmakers to function behind a solid base. I didn't think we were in such dire need of a WR or RB right now this year since it's pretty obvious we're not going to be in position for a serious title run this year with new systems on both offense and defense to implement and the massive turnover of personnel and with a lot of rookies starting.
I thought if we'd fixed our offensive line (in which we've now got an excellant start), the defesnive backfield and pass rush, we'd have a year for those components to gel and then we'd be ready to add the skill players when we can protect them and open up holes for them and give our QB's time to let the plays develop.
Having said that and after letting my dissapointment subside when we passed on a chance to get a much more sure pick at DE than we'll be able to get now, I'm liking that we got another player who apparently fell to us and who should have been drafted higher. I guess I should look at it like if we don't leave some glaring holes left, we might have a much better season next year and we'll play ourselves right out of the franchise QB sweepstakes with a 6 - 10 or 7 - 9 record.
I am happy that most of us got the prime player they were wanting. I'm still pinching myself that we actually landed Okung. Thomas was a huge bonus. I can almost wonder if we'd somehow acquired Cleveland's first pick that we'd have drafted Okung and Thomas at #6 and #7. To get that pair at #6 and #14 is just flat out amazing.
So, here's to you getting your boy too Slave.
Congrats!
written by S.TTBM, April 23, 2010
And next year, a big fast WR like Julio Jones, a monster DT or DE, and and and
I cant think. We have Okung, Thomas, and TATE! And all three are Ruskell-character guys to boot.
And Jimmy Claussen sucks not because he cant throw or read, but because he istn a leader. Thank you Gruden!
Im now rooting for Colt McCoy. The guy lost $30 million bucks because he came back for his senior season. How do you EVER get over that? Life is most definitely not fair. And I tell you what, McCoy is a true leader. Whatever other fualts he may have, he is a field general.
Somebody needs to draft Griffen soon.
I still want us to get Myron Rolle for SS, and a G in the fourth. If we do, Im going to freak out. Seriously, if it happens Im buying some freaking lottery tickets!

At least they have drafted 3 starters. If we get two more starters in this draft, then it could go down as one of the best in franchise history.

I know youre in love with the idea (as many are) of hometown boy Locker being Seattle's pick next year, but that would mean we go 1-15. Do you really think a Pete Carrol team would finish 4-12 or worse even if he kept last years team compeltely intact and refused to draft a single players?
No halfway decent coach EVER passes on BPA at a position of need in fear of winning too many games. OTherwise they wouldnt be the type of personality to lead an NFL team to greatness. Even Mora couldnt have done that.
So yeah, Caroll might go 9-7 or 10-6 next year. And you bemoan that and predict a decade of mediocrity since we wont suck and get one of the top 2 qb's in next years draft?! Thats why guys like you and me arent NFL coaches.
Again, what happened to having respect for Caroll and Schneiders professional judgement? One pick--a late second rounder--that wasnt spent on a position you crave, and now you are bailing on Caroll and comapany and fearing mediocrity for years?!
man, I sure hope youre being sarcastic. Otherwise your posts of the last few months seem pretty hypocritical, in my opinion.
written by GnarlyHawk, April 23, 2010
I know Pete now, and I spilled the coolaid all over my shirt after the last two days. Pleae be our Bill Walsh, you are so much like him already.
Heres to the rest of the draft - Go Hawks!
written by S.TTBM, April 23, 2010
That kind of desperation has led to picks like Dan McGwire, Rick Mirer, Kelly Stouffer, etc by us, and picks like Trent DIlfer, Heath Shuler, Jeff George, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Andre Ware, David Klingler, David Carr, Scott Mitchell, Ryan LEaf, etc etc by other teams.
Its obvious Caroll and company didnt like the qb's after Bradford enogh to take them. I bet they know a little about qb's. So we wait. Waiting, even with guys I dont like, such as Catholic Jesus Charlie, is preferable to whiffing on a guy you spend franchise qb picks and money on who busts compeltely.
And who's to say we dont find the next great qb in the next 4-5 years? Meanwhile, Caroll and company have to win a few games to keep thier jobs, which is no doubt in thier minds fairly often as they make decisions.
To me, they are making far better decisions than Holmgren did his first few years hear. And everyone knows Im a Holmgren fan. So Im excited.
And considering how excited you were over the team of Ruskell/Mora/Knapp heading into last year, it absolutely offends me that you arent excited about Caroll's regime. I dont get it. It boggles what passes for my mind.

just give him and pete a chance before you start cutting them down
written by Hawkdude, April 23, 2010
We still have a bunch of picks and I'm sure they have a good plan of attack. We pick 6th tomorrow. There is so much talent left to be had.
Great off season so far.
On a side note, McShay picked Seattle as the most improved after the first two days on the network. You should've seen Mora Jr.'s face when that was mentioned. Of course Mora had nothing to say other than he had a man crush on Taylor Mays.
So looking forward to the PC and JS era.

Of course I'm being sarcastic. Can't you tell with all the smiley faces, winks, and stuff?
I was being serious when I said that Carroll may field a .500 team next season so I do think that we could be relying on Whitehurst to man the QB position for the next few years while we try to find a young franchise type QB to properly relieve him. That's not necessarily a bad thing unless Whitehurst stinks.
Drafting in the second half of the first round will have us going through a few Colt McCoys or Jimmy Clausens until we find one that has the goods in the middle rounds or as second tier QB's on draft day. That could be next year or it could be in 4 more years. Whitehurst should be looked at as the interim QB until the QB of the future is identified. If he can perform that function well even if he's not a truly great QB, then it was still worth everything we gave for him because it will let us find the next guy without panic and desperation driving the decision. Priceless!
I never thought we'd have a chance at Locker next year by the way and for your information, I'm not one of the "have to have Locker" guys. I don't follow college football as a rule (although I try to watch a couple of Husky games every year) and Locker doesn't mean much more to me than any other top notch college QB as a Seahawk prospect. You must have me confused with someone else.
Like I said after reflection, I'm ok with the Golden Tate pick. I'm also still firmly behind coach Carroll and Schneider as GM. What I said before the draft was that if they ignored a LT until the middle rounds counting on Gibbs to find one there (as some guys were suggesting), I'd lose a lot of respect for their prowess as football rebuilders. However, they proved to be exactly on the same page with their picks so I'm still aboard 100% and do believe they know what they're doing.
I did say I thought Carroll made a mistake in not picking up a DE with the #60 pick but that was because a good DE is harder to find in later rounds than a good WR so I felt he would have gotten better value out of a DE. I do believe Tate was a good pickup because he slipped out of his projected range down to us.
To the argument that a good DE takes two or three years to develop and Tate would help the team right away I say that that's even a better reason to have drafted a DE this season so he could go through the learning curve and be an effective player in a couple of years when the rest of the team has gelled and they are ready to be competative. If we wait till next season, then we're another year away from him being ready to become an effective player for us. Water under the bridge now.
Many of us just blurt out our feelings at the time something happens and then reflect later that maybe we didn't see things as clearly as we first thought. Sound familiar Slave? I remember your first tirade after Carroll was hired. I could go back and find it on SA if you don't remember but I'm sure you do. Then I remember your acceptance of the hiring later followed by your climbing aboard the PC bandwagon and sipping a long tall koolaid.
Hey, I'm entitled to an opinion and a discouraging word here and there too you know.
You've had enough discouraging words over the last three years so you of all people should understand the concept.
In case you missed it before (go back and look, it's there), congrats on getting your boy drafted. That should have set things straight.
written by S.TTBM, April 24, 2010
Im glad youre not a Locker Homer. SOrry to assume you were. As for be blurting out my feelings, you bet, guilty as charged! I musunderstood your reasoning and opinion, now I get it. I was thrown by your flip-flopping on the Brandon Marshall situation, and the uproar over whether or not Seattle would take a LT high.
Ive had short comments utterly misudnerstood too, and had folks tell me to cut my fingers off so I couldnt type "retarded" opinions anymore. Thats why I asked if you were being sarcastic. Sorry I misunderstood your position.
You can repost my reaction to the Caroll hiring if you like. I was rather upset at our treatment of Holmgren, which I still feel was wrong on several levels. Im still leary of Caroll, but little by little they are earining my respect by thier personnell decisions.
Ive been critical of thier trades (except this one, though missing out on Wooten/McKnight for LenWhale White is odd to say the least), as I feel they were selling low and buying high and not worried about it. SD may have taken a straight trade down this year for Whitehurst, no one will ever know as Seattle didnt even try to bargain. Im still upset about that.
I realize he's a time-buyer to find the next great qb, and Im ok with that--I think thats a smart move. I just dont like the no-bargain thing.
If you remember, I loved Ruskells last couple drafts, with the exception of LoJack, as well. It was the horrible coaching and Ruskells dumping of Holmgrenites for lesser players who cost more that alienated my from that regime.
So I wouldnt say Im drinking any Koolaid. Caroll and company now have what appears to be one of, if not THE, best offseason in the NFL. But they havent played a game yet. As long as the coordinators are an upgrade over Knapp/Mora-Bradley last year (how could they not be?) then we should have a fun season. But of course, if Caroll and company start doing things I think are stupid, I will bash them like I did Ruskell.
Well, tell you what. At this point, I AM drinking the Koolaid. I wasnt predraft, but I guess I am now. Im excited, and if Im excited pretty much everyone else should be too, as Im careful not to get my hopes up--usually.
