Unfortunately, the best name in the draft (P Zoltan Mesko) is gone, so hopefully we take the best available player here...  Hawks on the clock baby!

With the 185th overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, your Seattle Seahawks select TE Anthony McCoy from USC! I had a feeling he might be the pick (really, ask Parker). McCoy could have easily been gnoe in the 2nd or 3rd round, and he's someone that Coach Carroll knows intimately. Not a huge pass catch threat, but much better than John Owens. This guy is the real McCoy! ...sorry.

Great value here. His stock fell because he smoked weed. Wah wah. Isn't that sort of required if you live in Southern California? Maybe he had a cold. Anyway, I love the pick. He was a 2nd or 3rd round pick according to Draft Countdown. Here's what they say:

Strengths: Good height with a large frame and long arms --- Very athletic --- Soft, reliable hands --- Excellent ball skills and body control --- A fine route runner --- Great strength --- Runs hard after the catch --- Shows the ability to stretch the field vertically --- Is extremely tough --- A superb all-around blocker --- Competitive --- A hard worker --- Still  has upside.

Weaknesses: Could stand to add some more weight --- Lacks explosiveness --- Just average speed and quickness --- Isn't elusive --- Not overly physical or powerful --- Wasn't  incredibly productive --- Durability may be an issue.

What do you think?

[Update - This was the best player available, for sure. Had he been gone, it would have likely been a tackle like Selvish Capers or Tony Washington. Look for us to grab a boatload of UFA linemen.]

[Update 2 - McShay just called McCoy the steal of the draft as far as tight ends go]

Interesting pick. Gives us two TE's that are receiving threats. McCoy is a better blocker than Carlson, however.
maybe dline

is addressed, and some of us arent seeing it yet.

We have the DT?DE from UNC, and we got Vicerson or whatever from Tennessee. He's a big dude, good against the run. Plus we have LoJack, Reed, Clemons, Red Bryant, Terrill, Mebane, Cole and a couple other DT's on the roster. One things for sure, we have bodies at the D-line position.

But yeah, given McCoy isnt considered a pass threat, its weird to take him. Plus, we have Baker, and Morrah, who has crazy potential but looked awful in preseason last year. Very confusing pick but you can reach or draft away from need here and it wont kill you. So its cool...
I think we had some greater needs than TE
written by TheRealist, April 24, 2010
Does this mean Cameron Morrah is gone? I was really hoping for another OL, like selvish capers. Maybe he will be available in the 7th though.

I would get it if we hadn't picked up baker

this is good value. I know we have a couple of picks left but PC/JS next time to shine will be with the undrafted FA's
value pick
written by Hojo, April 24, 2010
I think the Hawks had him rated as their BPA and took him based on their rankings vs. their need (something they can afford to do at this point in the draft).

Carroll would know best, and I don't feel like he's just picking him cause he's from usc. he passed up alot of those guys and he must like the kid
If I heard

Matt H's last interview on 710 correctly, they are going to run a ton of 2 TE sets. So They could keep 4 on the roster.
4th round
written by Louis Phan, April 24, 2010
i really hoped we would have traded up in the 4th round and got Bruce Campbell (OT)

he was considered a top 15 pick in the FIRST ROUND! so for a talent like that to fall into the 4th round is crazy.

Imagine...with a 4th round pick, we could have gotten him and our line would include Okung, Campbell, Unger, and 2 others, maybe Locklear at guard if he can play it, i dunno...

But to draft a potential LT in the 4th round, or RT in this case since we have Okung...it just seems to good to be true...

I think we are down into the BPA range now when you just try to grab the guy you rate as the best player and bring him in to compete in camp. I never expect a 6th or 7th rounder to even make the active roster, so it doesn't matter too much from here out. McCoy does sound like a guy who has a lot of potential to contribute once he gets up to NFL speed, however, so this may end up being a better pick than it seems now.
Great Draft

I for one will not play Mr. Noitall Armchair GM with this one. Our new leaders have proven already they know what they are doing, obviously there inst any DL help worth the pick, but I am sure some of you guys know better than those in the War Room

Teams will always keep 3 TEs on their roster. This enables us to play all three at any time. Cameron Morrah could make the team too, but he was very unimpressive in 2009.

very true, but I have a feeling at least 5 of them will. I am not sure about the punter or the FB making it. That and I hope that Mike Williams makes it. I think he is ready to play for his former coach.

I agree, on another note just watched Mora say something good about the Seahawks on nfl.com, he actually named them his #1 successful team in this draft. wow

Capers wqas a slug at the Senior Bowl. Love this pick, too. Allows for passing out of 2 TE sets, especially with Forsett on the field.

Yeah, and did you notice that Mora was also giving props to Ruskell for getting a first round pick from Denver last year, making it possible for us to take Thomas?

(He's right about that.)
...
written by Seahawksfan78, April 24, 2010
I am still not thrilled with this pick, but I still give an A for the overall draft for the Seahawks. I hope this convinces some of the PCJS haters that they are the right people for the job.
Mora
written by TexasHawk, April 24, 2010
Yeah I noticed that, was actually impressed with his segment, still glad he's gone though. lol
...
written by Mr Fish, April 24, 2010
It must pain Mora to admit that the Seahawks have had a good offseason.

He's right about that pick from Denver, but he neglected to mention all the things Ruskell did that hurt this team.

In some ways, however, Carroll reminds me of Mora. Both of them talk a good game, and what they say is usually a bunch of coach-speak clichés.

It's too early to say whether Pete's going to handle adversity better than Mora did, but he's already fixed Mora's worst mistakes by replacing the offensive coordinator and by finally addressing the obvious need to find a new left tackle.

Drafting another TE...
written by Hawksince77, April 24, 2010
...looks like another piece of PC's commitment to competition at every position. Look at the RBs and WRs -- along with QB and pretty much every other position except LB (don't see a lot of potential competition there) and safety (there's like, 4 of them, right?). We even have someone to challenge Trufant/Wilson/Jennings at CB.

Now Carlson can't be too complacent - with Baker and McCoy on the roster. Very cool.
...
written by CDHawk, April 28, 2010
Drafting McCoy allows us to have depth at blocking TE. Many run plays died at the hands of Carlson last year. This allows us to split him out, put him in motion, and take advantages his pass catching ability and speed. With depth at blocking TE (and McCoy can catch the ball too) we can use Carlson more like Dallas Clark, etc and improve our run blocking. The hawks are smart, they are building offensive packages and exploiting weapons they have.
