Are there any trade partners left? Who knows. The Seahawks are on the clock, and there are plenty of possibilities left:

  • Derrick Morgan
  • Jimmy Clausen
  • Dez Bryant
  • Earl Thomas* (he didn't get taken by the Eagles!)
There are way more of course, and a trade down is possible. Look for Green Bay or Houston to possibly play a part in any trade left... maybe the Patriots for Dez Bryant?

With the 14th Pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, YOUR Seattle Seahawks select...

Safety Earl Thomas, Texas. A phenomenal young player who can make plays. He is a true free safety with more playmaking ability than Berry, but definitely not as diverse in his skill set. Could be a superstar in this league, but I'm a bit concerned with the lack of attention to our defensive line. Still a chance we could be trading Thomas to someone (the Packers), but unlikely.

Mike Mayock has had Thomas ranked as his top safety all season, and I once said a similar thing. Again, we'll be covering things more completely at the end of the draft, but we just got two phenomenal players in our first round.

Amazing.

And amazing what other teams did. Taking Williams at 4? That seems studid to me. Trading up to 13 to take Graham and not Thomas? OMG. And Alualu at 10? Really?

Thank you, Phili, Jacksonville, Washington -- I really appreciate it!!!!!

Great draft

Two big needs filled with two of the best overall players available. This is a great day to be a 'Hawks fan. If we can score a third round pick somehow or move up in the second, we can address the D-Line rebuild and QB succession plan needs.
sweet!
written by Doug H, April 22, 2010
what a draft!
our two most important needs resolved with the arguably two best players at the position. Remember we were the 30th ranked pass defense. How many times did we get torched long? Thomas will cut that number in half because his instincts are the best!
FTW and can you DIG it!

Whooooohooooooooooooooo!!!

Remember this draft for years to come..YAAAAAYYY

Morgan looked too much like Lo Jack on film, Thomas is a Super Beast, the likes of which we have not had in the Secondary since Easley...if he's 80% of Easley, that will be solid indeed.

Oh...
written by Snake, April 22, 2010
And I still think releasing Deon Grant was a stupid move. Wish they could've restructured his deal and moved him to FS - he was better in coverage anyhow. Could you imagine our secondary next year with Thomas, Grant, Trufant and Wilson. Stupidass move.
...
written by BillT, April 22, 2010
Think about this. PC knows Clausen as well as anyone picking could having followed him from high school till now. He passed on him twice today (so far) and that should tell you something about how PC really feels about him. I'll guarantedd you he wouldn't have passed on him at #14 if he thought he was a sure fire franchise QB.

Okung and Thomas. Are you kidding me! IT'S LIKE WE TRADED UP!

Put it this way, would you rather have had Berry and Brown or Okung and Thomas as your LT, safety combination?
wow, now JPP and Morgan

What about DE?!?!?!
written by MikeL, April 22, 2010
Yes, we got a great cover S, but what about DE? No more Kerney (thank god), Tapp and Redding. All we have left is LoJack and Nick Reed? No depth, no rotation! I'd much rather have a good pass rush than good secondary. Good pass rush will make a mediocre secondary look good. We need to trade up and get a quality DE!
...
written by Evan C, April 22, 2010
Taylor who???? I love this pick also. I will wonder if Seattle makes a move for Lynch and/or Umenyiora. I think Seattle could look at George Selvie from USF in the 5th or 6th round, he was a top 10 talent last year, just had a bad sr season.
Smallest Secondary Ever!!
written by hawker, April 22, 2010
Not happy at all. Earl seems like a great guy and a good player, but the last thing the hawks secondary needs is another little man. He is 5-10!!! Fitz, V-Jack & Crabtree are gonna take a poo on our secondary
...
written by MikeL, April 22, 2010
We should have grabbed Morgan or JPP who were both available at #14, then traded up with our 2nd rd pick for Mays. That would be a dream draft!
...
written by Snake, April 22, 2010
Hawker - I am with you, dude! Deon Grant was 6'2" and w/o him they had no size. That move just baffled me. Clearly still does.
...
written by Evan C, April 22, 2010
Seattle's rush defense wasn't all that bad, our pass defense was 30th overall. You couldn't ignore the secondary, the D line will be better this year.

seattle will grab another safety later but love what we have done so far
...
written by BillT, April 22, 2010
Of course Springs was a CB. I meant to say DB (defensive back). I'm so elated I can't even think straight. smilies/smiley.gif We dodged the high risk picks of either Morgan or JPP and Spiller wasn't even an option. That was enough to make me happy. Then we got arguably the best safety and LT in the draft from the number 6 and 14 position. That's enough to make anyone a little rummy.

Clausen is dropping like a rock.
...
written by Mr Fish, April 22, 2010
I don't understand all the hatred for Clausen, but oh well.

I also see BillT repeating what I said earlier today before the draft began about Pete Carroll probably knowing Clausen better than anyone. Again, oh well. Anyway, as I said then, if Carroll decides not to go for Jimmy, I'll be OK with it

It looks like we're drafting for immediate need this year.

Baluga is falling like one of Big Ben's first dates.
If there had been an elite pass rusher...
written by Hawksince77, April 22, 2010
...that rated as high as Thomas, then that would have been the pick.

Taking a mediocre pass rusher (Morgan) or a high-risk one (JPP) would have been a mistake when an elite safety was there (Thomas). That's what it is about -- getting value with the pick.

Now it doesn't matter in later rounds...
written by Hawksince77, April 22, 2010
...as the best player can be taken, at any position.

I would like to see another safety (perhaps a thumper like Kam Chancellor in the 4th) and someone like Tate or Houston at 60, and another guard or tackle in later rounds.

Way too cool. Don't have to reach for an LT (one of my fears) or take a luxury pick on Bryant or Spiller.

Way too effing cool...
1st round

So glad they didnt draft Morgan. When was the last time a DE made an immediate impact. It takes 2 years for the best guys.Add in Seattle hasnt had best of luck drafting DL in 1st round ( L.Jackson M.Tubbs).Very happy with 2 picks I wouldnt of been upset if they took the OL from Iowa or Idaho!!

Belaga just got picked. Man, he sure looks the part of a lineman in the NFL. That big square face and huge head/neck. Wow!

Will Belaga be this years Oher? Falling into the twenties in the first round after being touted as a top ten pick. Could be a great value pick.
...
written by BillT, April 22, 2010
Now, somehow we have to play bad enough to get a shot at Locker next season. Figure we'll pickup some talent in the middle rounds to fill out our offensive line and then after having a year to gel, time to bring your franchise QB with a young and upcoming young offensive line to protect him and a couple of play makers (WR, RB) to put the cherry on top. The plan is on track so far.

I know it's all been said already... but Okung & Thomas are a phenominal first day!!
...
written by Irish4life, April 22, 2010
I like the 6th pick, but once again we go defense in the first round. That's 4 years in a row we have drafted defense. We will still struggle because we did not have a touchdown maker. The league is about offense and last time I checked we still have no play makers. If Forsett is still our biggest threat then we got problems.
YES!!!
written by Don Millard, April 22, 2010
This is one of our very best 1st rounds ever! We could have used help at other areas and there were other fantastic options available but we really had NO LT or SS and we got the best players at each of those positions!!! So far so good for the new FO crew.

Perfect picks. Okung reminds me of Ryan Clady (I'm a Boise State grad, so I've seen A LOT of him). Thomas is that hybrid S/CB with serious speed and ballhawking ability. Things fell very well for us and I can't wait to see these guys develop.

Okung is huge.He is way better than Trent Williams.Dont know to much about Thomas.I have heard he is a ballhawk.Derek Morgan would have been nice but the ways things look this year Dunlap could be there in the fourth.Just kidding but he may be there at 60 though.Denver what were you thinking.wow.And what about Jacksonville that pick was a reach.Raiders actually made a great pick this year.

Awesome! Best combo possible.

Claussen fell for a reason folks--despite his guady stats and potential, he has enough warning flags to make him far from a sure bet. And his buthheaded lack of leadership on the Gruden show obviously scared many teams away from him. Imagine, being passed over for Tebow!

Thomas is perhaps the best cover safety in years and years, despite being only 5'-10 1/2" tall--but remember, he is 208 lbs. He's also ripped and has no fat at all. He's a fantastic athlete who also runs 4.3-4.4 40's, AND he hits harder than Wilson.

He is actually better in coverage than Eric Berry. And as I said, he's a hitter too. AND he can play nickel back one on one with slot WR's too. Pretty good deal at 14.

Hawks said they were considering Claussen at 14 (yuck), and if Philly had taken Thomas they would have traded down (again probably to take Claussen). Im so relieved we got Thomas!

Ive been calling for him since the mocks began listing him as a possibility at 40. Boy did he climb!

Also, both Okung and Thomas have hard times in thier past, and both intend to buy houses for thier parent(s). Thomas' family is living in one room as thier house was destroyed in a hurricane in 2005. Thomas came out of college TWO YEARS EARLY to buy them a house. Pretty cool story. And remember, he's only 20, which means he could conceivably lock down the FS position for a decade, then finish at SS for another few years.

How can anyone be unhappy with this haul?!

I still cant believe the stinking Cowturds got thier man in Dez Bryant. They are really gonna love him down there. Yuck! I really wish he'd gone somewhere I didnt hate!
