So says the word coming down from Renton, according to Danny O'Neil's Twitter.
But as far as the nature of this "announcement" from Pete Carroll and company is concerned, O'Neil says to expect a formal retirement of Big Walt. This is hardly surprising, given that the team just spent its No.6-overall draft pick on the man expected to fill his shoes: Russell Okung.
While it'll be nice to finally have some closure on the issue of Jones' retirement, he leaves unquestionably large shoes to fill on protecting the blind side of the quarterback. Okung said the very same thing after being drafted, however, so his humility and attitude cannot be overlooked so far. Fortunately, it seems there's a unanimous agreement out there that Okung has the work ethic of a Clydesdale, so if anyone is up to the challenge, it's him.
Make no mistake, however -- Walter Jones is arguably the best left tackle the game has ever seen, and his presence was severely missed last year on the field and in the locker room. If Okung is to be his successor, it will take a huge amount of work and development, but Alex Gibbs seems more than up to the task.
Either way, it goes without saying: We'll miss you, Walt.
