For the second straight mini-camp (aka, 100% of all Pete Carroll-led mini-camps), the Seahawks and Pete Carroll have told LB Leroy Hill to stay home for the camp. Coming off a disappointing season (11 games, 1 sack, 37 tackles) and an even more disappointing off-season (arrest for domestic assault and repercussions from last year's mid-intersection stoner snooze), Hill's position on this team with this regime is anything but solid.
With both David Hawthorne and Will Herring stepping up in huge ways in 2009, Hill's $6 million / year contract is not overly burdensome and with his expected four game suspension ($1.5MM off that), I wouldn't see a backup linebacker making $4.5 million as too much to bench if the other guys are playing better. Of course, they would probably try to trade him, but I wouldn't see a reason to cut him outright as the whole salary is guaranteed.
The structure of his contract is such that the Seahawks basically have four options to keep him after this year, with no guaranteed money coming (or, next to none) after 2010. That structure could make him solid tradebait if, say, another 4-3 OLB goes down with an injury. Either way, when your brand new coach isn't even interested in seeing your face at camp, having you learn the new systems... well, that's certainly not a good sign for your future with the team.
