I was reading ESPN's NFC West blog this evening, figuring there would be some good articles and analysis on the Seahawks game and wow! What a revelation that was. Now don't get me wrong here, I love Sando and I realize that he attended the San Francisco/Cardinals game today, but the blog just ignored the Seahawks game like it was the most insignificant game played in the league today. Now I'm used to that kind of attitude from most East coast sports writers but not the NFC West blog. Here's a breakdown of the articles I did find on the NFC West blog from Sunday, September 13th:
There was the usual "Around the NFC" opener, which covers all 4 teams and points to articles mostly written by local sports writers for each team. There was an article detailing the week one inactive players from around the league. One additional article gave a link to live commentary and analysis from ESPN and ESPN.com staffers throughout the Sunday games. Then there were ten articles about the 49ers' match-up with the Cardinals and one article that was a wrap-up of the Seahawks and Rams game. One additional article talked about the replay review that helped Seattle and the one that helped the 49ers win today. End of day one in the NFC West on the ESPN NFC West blog. Even in the article entitled "NFC West race much tougher in 2009," it was essentially all about how the 49ers were going to make it tough for the Cardinals to repeat this year. Seattle wasn't mentioned. Somehow I though Seattle might have a voice in that one.
OK, we've already hashed the lack of respect situation over a bunch of times and I'm just letting it roll off my back this time too, but it just struck me as kind of odd that this is an NFC West blog and it all seems to be about the 49ers and Cardinals as if only they were in the running for the division title. I would put Seattle firmly in that race too, especially after their showing today. I didn't attend the Seattle game today but watched it on TV and was able to write a lengthy article about them and some things I noticed from the game. No one can attend more than one game on a given Sunday, but many writers do write-ups on a number of different games, not just the one they happened to attend. I would have thought there would have been more about the Seattle game on the blog today both before and after the game. It would be natural to have more information about the game you attended, but there are plenty of sources to get information about other games played in which you were not able to attend.
I don't expect other sites and publications to make much of us defeating the Rams at Qwest Field, but since there are only four teams to cover in the NFC West I would have hoped for a little more. You'd think in that situation even Seattle could get a little more face time than one article out of ten, but maybe not. At any rate, it's business as usual as far as accolades are concerned for today's victory. I do like flying low under the radar and operating from a black hole as far as our playbook goes, which I've noted before. Maybe we should actually be thanking the NFC West blog for helping us achieve that objective? Might be the 49ers are already asking "Who's that team we're playing next week? Who plays for them? Are they anyone we should be concerned with?". Great! Thanks ESPN.
It was disappointing, but like we all said before the only way to change that is to go out and win games. I'm just wondering what the headlines will be next weekend when we play the 49ers, especially if we win. Will they concede that we might have an impact on the title race then and be someone to be reckoned with in the division? Probably not.
Hasta,
Bill T
