Rumors out today suggest that Brian Russell has been cut (streamers and confetti drop from the Sullivan household ceilings). It has also been reported that the entire 2009 draft class will be "safe." Since no GM can guarantee someone will clear waivers to be "safe," that suggests that every draftee will be on the final 53.
So, what does this all mean? Well, for one, everyone who attempted to predict the Final 53 just got made to look like a boob by Ruskell. Thanks a lot, dude.
Beyond that, it means that the Seahawks safety situation has just been thrown for a loop. It's clear that Brian Russell was not doing much on the field, but is Jordan Babineaux the 70-snap-a-game answer? I'm dubious. The same link states that Lawyer Milloy will be signed. Jim Mora also signed Milloy in Atlanta.
If that does NOT happen, I would estimate our depth as: Deon Grant - Jordan Babineaux - Jamar Adams - CJ Wallace - Courtney Greene. I wouldn't actually expect Greene to make the team if not for the Ruskell quote earlier. Do we really keep 5 safeties? Babs adds flexibility to this unit as he can play cornerback and was thought of, up to now, as our dime back, but now what?
It is possible that the Seahawks have acquired a safety either in a trade or signing. There are a few decent guys out there, but most of them are older blokes who might not have the speed we're hoping for out of this defense. It will be interesting. Ideally, we sign a solid vet to a one-year contract and then draft Berry or Mays with Denver's pick.
Outside of the safeties though, this suggests that Mike Teel is indeed our 3rd QB (no shock, but John David Booty and Brian Brohm are both cut / expected to be cut, two guys the Hawks have had their eyes on). It also suggests that Cameron Morrah will make the team, though it is clear that he did not outplay Joe Newton. Newton just doesn't have the lower body strength to play TE in the NFL.
