In the shadow of the Brian Russell cut is a sister-rumor that Lawyer Milloy is on the verge of signing a contract with the Seahawks.
Lawyer Milloy is an excellent strong safety. In the last four years, he started 63 of 64 games and judging by his statistics, has not lost much despite his age (he'll be 36 in November). Last year, Milloy recorded 93 tackles, an interception and five pass defenses. (Deon Grant, our very good strong safety, has never reached 80 tackles, though he does plenty of other things.)
Currently, Deon Grant is our strong safety, but he has played free safety in the past and is actually probably better at that position. Grant is a ball-hawk and has better sense of coverage than Brian Russell ever did. A move of Grant to free safety improves the secondary, even without a cut-and-sign move. Bringing in an established, talented safety like Milloy to play SS is potentially a great move.
The fact that we have our first two games against poor passing teams is going to help give him time to catch up, if he is indeed going to be signed.
[Update: He is signed!]
