Well, these are always fun. Nothing like putting your boneheaded thoughts out for criticism and likely-wrongness. But hey, isn't that what being a football fan is all about? Here's how I see the 53-man Roster breaking down [Read More]

Offense

Quarterback (3)
Roster: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Mike Teel
Cut: Jeff Rowe
Comments: This one is a no-brainer. Rowe has looked bad and has gotten few reps of late. Teel makes the team unless the Seahawks prefer a waiver pickup.

Running Back (3)
Roster: - Julius Jones, Edgerrin James, Justin Forsett
Cut: Devin Moore
Comments: Another no-brainer. Moore has done nothing to differentiate himself, Forsett has, and Edge was brought in with a roster spot all but promised to him judging by Mora allowing him to skip preseason games. Moore will be on the practice squad (1).

Fullback (2)
Roster: Justin Griffith, Owen Schmitt
Cut: David Kirtman
Comments: Kirtman has never been able to prove he belongs on this squad. While Schmitt has disappointed in the preseason, Kirtman hasn't done enough to push the 2008 fifth round pick out of a roster spot. I believe Justin Griffith has done enough to push Schmitt out of the starting spot, but perhaps not as early as week one.

Tight End (3)
Roster: John Carlson, John Owens, Joe Newton
Cut: Cameron Morrah
Comments: Cameron Morrah has blown what looked like a surefire roster spot. He'll wind up the same place Joe Newton has the last couple of years: on the practice squad (2). Newton offers the same thing Morrah does -- a second receiving threat -- and has the same basic weakness -- mediocre blocking. The difference is that Newton finally played fairly well and Morrah really, really did not.

Wide Receiver (5)
Roster: TJ Houshmandzadeh, Nate Burleson, Deion Branch, Deon Butler, Courtney Taylor
Cut: Ben Obamanu, Jordan Kent, Michael Bumpus, Mike Hass, Logan Payne
Comments: There is a very good chance that the Seahawks keep six WRs, and if so Obo gets that spot most likely, as he can play all three WR positions effectively. This was hyped as a huge competition, but Taylor set himself apart in preseason Week 1, and has not looked back. Logan Payne or Michael Bumpus (#3) wind up on the Practice Squad (most likely Payne).

Offensive Linemen (10)
Roster: Walter Jones, Sean Locklear, Chris Spencer, Rob Sims, Ray Willis, Max Unger, Steve Vallos, Mansfield Wrotto, Kyle Williams
Cut: William Robinson, Na'Shan Goddard, Andre Ramsay, Brian De La Puente, Cory Withrow
Comments: I do not believe Walter Jones will be put on the IR. If he is, that's where the sixth WR spot comes from, as none of the four getting cut here are going wiggle their way in. This is still a questionable line-up, but the only flex spot is Kyle Williams who could head to the practice squad. It is still hypothetically possible for the Seahawks to pick up some quality depth in Williams' stead, but it seems they like what they are getting from K-Dub so far. Brian De La Puente (#4) will likely wind up on our practice squad, as will Andre Ramsay (#5), and Kyle Williams (#6) if he's cut.

Total Offense: 26

Defense

Linebacker (6)
Roster: Lofa Tatupu, Leroy Hill, Aaron Curry, D.D. Lewis, David Hawthorne, Will Herring
Cut:  Lance Laury, Dave Philistin
Comments: Herring, Hawthorne and Lewis are the backup linebackers. Laury is a very solid special teams contributor, but hasn't shown up elsewhere on the field. I would love Laury to stay, but not at the price of Nick Reed (who, hypothetically, could be considered LB depth with his size) or Michael Bennett.

Cornerback (4)
Roster: Marcus Trufant [Possibly PUP List], Ken Lucas, Josh Wilson, Kelly Jennings, [Kevin Hobbs]
Cut: [Kevin Hobbs], Travis Fisher, Marquis Floyd
Comments: If Trufant is PUP'd, Hobbs makes the team but Babs will be our Dime back, not him. He will be inactive for games, barring injury. If Trufant is able to play, Hobbs is gone. There is still a relatively high probability that the Seahawks will bring in another Cornerback, but it won't likely be recently-cut Rod Hood, who was probably the worst starting CB in the league last year.

Safety (4)
Roster: Deon Grant, Brian Russell, Jordan Babineaux, Jamar Adams
Cut: CJ Wallace, Courtney Greene
Comments: This was a tough one. I would honestly prefer to cut Russell, start Babs and keep Wallace and Adams, but that isn't going to happen. Grant and Russell will start, Babs and Adams make the team. Why Adams? I like his size and speed near the line of scrimmage where they've been playing Grant a lot. Adams also has very solid tackling skills, which this defense needs, whereas Wallace is a great hitter. We also know that Mora likes him quite a bit. Cutting CJ Wallace is a tough pill to swallow, and he is probably #54 or #55. Adams winning out over him would be a surprise, but I think it is going to happen. Courtney Greene lands on the practice squad (#7)

Defensive Line (10)
Roster: Patrick Kerney, Brandon Mebane, Colin Cole, Cory Redding, Red Bryant, Lawrence Jackson, Darryl Tapp, Nick Reed, Craig Terrell, Michael Bennett
Cut: Baraka Atkins, Derek Walker
Comments: There remains a chance that Lawrence Jackson will be traded or cut, in which case Baraka Atkins is almost certainly kept. Still, no two people have done more to show their worth this offseason than Reed and Bennett. Atkins is a good player, but after three years of trying, trying, trying to be the guy the Seahawks want him to be, I just don't think he's quite gotten there. Derek Walker winds up on the PS (#8)

Total Defense: 24

Specialists (3)
Roster: Olindo Mare, Jon Ryan, Kevin Houser
Cut: Brandon Coutu
Comments: If the Seahawks can get anything for Brandon Coutu, they need to. Mare appears to be approximately equal to Coutu in the field goal game and far, far surpasses him in kickoffs.

Total Cut: 23
Total Roster: 53

Nice Chris. Probably the most likely 53 as of today. I am still pulling for Kent if we keep 6 WR's, but only for Madden reasons with his size and speed. What do you think it means long term for the Seahawks kicker position if we cut/trade Coutu? Kickers are often the oldest players on a team, how long could Mare keep going?
What does Kyle Williams making the 53 say about our depth on Oline?

I only count 9 OL in your list. Am I missing something?

Good subjective roster list. I have a few disagreements:

I think we keep 6 WR no matter what: Taylor and Hass. And I think Payne is out, or nearly out, of PS elegibility. He looked worthless at WR, good at ST. Bumpus hasnt gotten any time, and he's a much better athlete than Payne. PS for sure, while Payne gets cut. Obomanu looked mostly terrible, not like a fourth year player at all. He caused a pick and ran consistently sloppy routes. He's gone--or should be.

I also feel Hobbs has lost his spot no matter what. Jennings grip on a spot is by the skin of his teeth. Even Marquis Floyd looked better, and had some good hits. I think we keep Fisher or Floyd unless some other team cuts a better player.

WIth the secondary looking weak, we may only keep 5 WR's and so keep an extra DB. If so, I think we keep Courtney Greene, CJ Wallace, and Adams. None of these guys are a lock to clear waivers, and no one wants to lose them. Greene, despite being a rookie, was rarely out of position and demonstrated a mean streak with some big hits we havent seen since before Ken Hamlin got bonked on the head. There's no way we risk losing Adams either. If one goes, its Wallace. And Russell needs to be cut. Keeping him would be too stupid for me to stand now that our young safeties have shown so much. Babs also looked much more competent than Russell.

Other than that, I agree whole-heartedly with your analysis.

Lawrence Jackson is not getting cut or traded. He was brought in to be the left defensive end, not the right. The left defensive end deals with stopping the run and taking on double teams from the right tackle and tight end. He is not a pass rusher in the nfl. Think of him as cory redding's understudy.

It's like phil loadholt. He protected sam bradford's blindside in college, but in the nfl he just isn't a left tackle. John marshall used him wrong last season.

I'm not so sure Housh makes the team. What has he done so far? I mean his speed ranking in madden is only an 81, so why do we need a "slow" player like him on this team. I'm picking Kent over him to be the starting flanker.

Just joking, just figure I'd try to raise some eyebrows.

I hope Payne at least makes the PS cuz WR's looks crowded. I agree with the OL picks and while many here don't seem to like Williams, you have to admit he's played pretty well this preseason.

Herring's fun to see fly around.

If it were up to me I would lose one or two more of the d-linemen and keep one or two more LB/S types who can play special teams. I think it's more important to have good special teams players than be two and a half teams deep on the line. Two deep should be enough, even if you're doing a lot of rotation, don't you think?

I know it is a stretch to talk about Madden on a 53 post. But I like Madden. And I like the idea of a 6'4 WR with speed and jumping ability on the Seahawks in Madden. I will try to keep my Madden fanhood to myself on these posts from here on out.

I believe it is Bumpus who can't go on the PS because of too much playing time last year.

I could be wrong but I think I remember this being written somewhere....

i'll just go straight to the places where i question your choices.

1. jamar adams?!? yeah right. wallace will make it.
2. TEN defensive linemen???? bennett goes to ps.
3. laury makes it.

i think they will keep 6 receivers and 9 offensive linemen, plus at least one of each on the ps. trufant will go on the pup, but walter will not go on the ir. (spencer might though..)

Fox sports has an article suggesting that... 1. the Seahawks should trade Branch to the Rams. 2.That we should make a trade for center Scott Wells of the Packers.
I don't like the idea of trading within the division, but the Green Bay trade does work for me.
...
written by Ryan Romano, September 01, 2009
I tend to agree with Sando that the depth at WR looks a lot better with Branch on the roster. I don't get why Branch's name has been thrown around so much in trade rumors. I know a year is a long time to remember back, but everyone talking about trading a WR needs to try and remember the season that was 08.

I like the idea of trading for a O linemen. But not a center. If Spencer is gone after this year and Unger is his replacement, Center is not a position we need to trade for. A starting caliber G would be nice. A starting LT would be even better. It has been mentioned before that Seattle is set for depth at RT with Locklear and Willis. But with only Lock and Walt playing LT, we need another starting LT. The draft is probably a better route to get a LT. But draft is not fun to talk about in September. Free agents and trades are.

Bumpus got cut today. Presumably so that he had time to catch on with another team.

I bet they keep only five WR's. This scheme doesn't lend itself to needing many receivers. They'll keep six if they need a special teams stud. Taylor's pretty good on ST, Kent is even better. Obomanu is okay.

This will be interesting. I guess 6'4" and jumping ability translates better on Madden offense than in NFL offense.

How bout trading Kerney for a d back keep Lojack. Get something for Kerney while you can
...
written by omarlittle, September 01, 2009
No way we trade Kerney, we are counting on him more than any player on our defense to return to pre 08 form. He sets the tempo of our defense and is far too valuable to us to trade for a scrub or draft pick.

If Russell isn't cut then that means two different sets of coaches, Head, DC Coordinator and Positional have decided he adds value to the team. I'm not anti or pro Russell but maybe there is something to him if all these better football minds keep on choosing him.I think CJ Wallace makes the team. I wasn't especially looking out for him but did Jamar Adams do anything in preseason. I saw Wallace make plays.
Will be interesting at WR. I think Payne is headed for the PS as he's eligible. Probably Bumpus too. Out of the outsiders I've liked Hass' contribution so far. Taylor has played well but long memories with that guy.
Fwiw I'd keep Couto. Knee injurie with a vet kicker doesn't great and he must be cheaper. Is strange with the kickoffs but then how many kicks have we ever seen Couto do in a game situation? Maybe 15? Taylor dropped more passes than that in one season. /jk

Trade Branch? This is the NFl, not fantasy football. Players are rarely traded...

Also, the two likely trading partners would be the Rams and Broncos. Why would the Seahawks trade with them? No way we trade with Broncos, we have their first round pick in case you forgot, so why help them get better? I highly doubt we would trade with the Rams as they are in our division. Can we please stop this talk about trading Branch or cutting him? I will run on the field naked if we do.

Steve, the reason you keep 10 D linemen (if you have the talent, and we do) is A) in case someone gets hurt, and B) the fewer snaps each player has to play, the fresher they'll be, not only late in each game, but late in the season, and especially going into the playoffs...

written by Hawk4Life, September 02, 2009
LOL!... Wow one or two too many beers tonight. How did I totally leave out the TE's?!?!... Especially after Carlson's monster game on Saturday?

Anyways I believe they will only keep two TE's - Carlson and Owens. To make room I would remove Obo and Newton. I don't think your project placed enough importance on special teams. If we were to cut Kent, Payne, Wallace, and Laury our ST would be taking a MAJOR hit. I believe good ST play from Laury and Wallace multiple times per game adds more value than Obo and Newton sitting on the bench and adding very little to special teams. We could keep Morrah and another WR on the PS in case of injury problems. Teams need to win at least two phases of the games and I believe keeping two special team BEASTS puts us in a position to do just that.

Just to clear things up I can't count tonight. Here is my projection WITH the TE's & minus hahaha... In keeping with my emphasis on ST I would cut either Terrill or Bennett (and try and get him on the PS). Our D Line is very versitle and with Redding, Jackson, and Bennett being able to play both inside and outside I think Terrill becomes expendable. Anyways sorry for all the posts...

"the reason you keep 10 D linemen (if you have the talent, and we do) is A) in case someone gets hurt,"

True of any position.

"the fewer snaps each player has to play, the fresher they'll be"

True of any position.

The problem with going ten deep on the d-line is that on any given play you're going to have 60-70% of them twiddling their thumbs on the bench. That's just not a wise use of your limited roster space. Compare to the defensive back situation, where 50-80% of them will be used on any given play, plus they are more likely to be useful on special teams. It's unfortunate that the Seahawks have a glut of d-linemen and one or two of them will have to go, but them's the breaks.

written by nightwulf, September 02, 2009
Steve, yes, you will keep 60-70% of them on the bench at any given time...have you ever played on the defensive side of the trenches? I can assure you, it's the most brutal place on the football field...It's sort of like what the Roman army used to do...every 30-40 sec, they'd blow a whistle, and the guys fighting in the front of the line would disengage and run to the back to take a breather...then they'd work their way back up to the front, fresh and ready to rock...If you do that sort of thing with a D line, I guarantee that you will DOMINATE the fourth quarter...the reason most teams don't do this is because of lack of talent...We are lucky that we have so much talent on the DL this year, and we ought to make use of it...remember, games are won in the trenches...
Also, if you're old enough, remember Bear Bryant's Alabama teams? He didn't beat you with superior talent, or coaching, or schemes...he beat you because he had like 150-200 guys on the team, and everyone played like 3 plays...when you were playing them, you never faced anyone who was out of breath...
...
written by S.TTBM, September 02, 2009
Nightwulf--The rotating thing is what we've been doing for several years. We havent dominated any quarter, let alone the fourth. True, that was mostly due to the fact that we were rotating undersized wimps with little talent (and the fat loser Bernard), but rotating the D-line hasnt been real productive for us.

Bear Bryant coached a looong time ago. The game has changed drastically since then. No one who coaches with his philosophies will win jack. Not saying giving guys a breather now and then is a bad thing, or that trench work isnt important--just that having 10 D-lineman seems ridiculous with an offensive line in tatters and talent loaded up elsewhere we would have to dump to keep 10 D-lineman.
