Jim Mora called in and spoke with Colin Cowherd for about ten minutes this morning. The audio is here, but here's what I got out of it.
- Jim Mora was asked straight off the bat, how have your games been called so far in the preseason -- are you throwing everything out there or has it been vanilla stuff? "Uh, we're pretty vanilla, very vanilla actually... We haven't gotten creative yet, you get into that when you're in the regular season." That, my friends, is very exciting.
- On Houshmandzadeh, Mora said that Housh has been great at getting open, finding holes in zones, reading coverages, et cetera. His general mentality has been good for the team, specifically the willingness to take a hit.
- Hasselbeck's Injuries -- are there certain places that you wouldn't put him in to avoid injuries? "Absolutely. We're careful about that, especially this time of year." Mora pointed out Hasselbeck's tackle attempt after the interception and how he did not approve, which was kind of funny. Mora also suggested switching Hasselbeck's red practice jersey with a "soothing green sheet" so as not to invoke his defense's ire, as though they are fighting a bull. Heh.

Chris,
Ha, ha man. You beat me to it. I was doing a writeup of Mora's interview but you scooped me.
No problem there.
I also thought it was good to hear that we're just running vanilla stuff which means we can expect to see the real product unveiled the following Sunday when the Rams come to Quest.
That would account for some of the problems with the pass rush and why we've not seen any real creative blitzing which would seem to be in order when we're not getting pressure on the QB with just the front four. Also, I would hope the running game would be harder to predict and set up the play action better as well as more complicated passing schemes. I feel pretty confident that all of those issues will be addressed when the fully spiced version hits the field against the Rams. Right now, I expect us to just kill the Rams and serve notice that these Seahawks aren't even related to last year's version.
During preseason, it's all about assessing the young players and getting the veterans ready to play. The fully loaded schemes are worked on at practice but not displayed in preseason games except as a watered down basic version with no game planning.
I can't wait for the Rams game and the opportunity to have a look at the fully unleashed product (or at least as much as it takes to crush the Rams which probably isn't much more than we've been seeing in preseason). The 2nd game at San Francisco is where I expect them to pull out all the stops because that will be our first road test and another important division game.

Hass' tackle looked more like an illegal block to me...
What? Too soon?

Here is some information I found to be encouraging, even if it is just the preseason:
2009 NFC West Standings
TEAM W L T PF PA
San Francisco 3 0 0 58 49
Seattle 3 0 0 61 37
St. Louis 2 1 0 60 61
Arizona 0 3 0 53 81
What really stands out is that difference in the Points Allowed Column. We know our defense has looked pretty good so far, even if it has been "very vanilla", but it is interesting to see the point differential between teams in our division. I know this is a BIG stretch but this sort of play reminds me of our defense in 2005... Sure they gave up a lot of yards but they were able to keep teams out of the end zone. Hopefully we will see this trend continue into the regular season.
Another bonus: We also lead the division in the points scored! However I don't see this trend keeping pace when the games start to count. There is no way Arizona's offense dosen't lead the NFCW in points scored. Just something to think about.

I really don't see the Cards doing that well on offense this year.
Fitz and Boldin will tear it up with Kurt slinging it but Hightower sucks....they should have kept Edge...Their loss.
True: Edge lost carries to Hightower in the middle of the season but they went back to James in the late games and playoffs. Something to think about too.

"....they should have kept Edge...Their loss "
??? Joke ???
IMO, Edge was really a decisive factor ... only against the Hawks during the final game of the RS.
Besides, Beanie Wells seems to have what it takes to be successful at a pro level (this pick bothered me since the beginning ...)

I am really looking forward to seeing what "creative" means to Bradley and Mora. The 3-3-5 is just one of the things that should be fun to watch. From the sound of it, we will be stacking against the pass and daring teams to run the ball. Pretty much the complete opposite of last year with the cover one that stacked against the run and dared teams to pass. With our current situation at CB, we are going to have to be very creative to stop Fitz and Q.
Durteehawk- Unproven for a HB is almost better than being over 30 wouldn't you say? You really can't blame them for doing what they did with James. Although it was lousy how they handled him, holding onto him until after most teams had addressed their needs at HB. Except us. Their biggest loss is that they now have to face Edge twice this year and he most likely will be playing with a chip on his shoulder.
Using simple logic, Hightower had a tough time passing James on the depth chart in AZ. Now Wells is having a tough time passing Hightower. It would not be unreasonable to assume that Wells would have an even tougher time passing James on the depth chart were they on the same team. Or that James, today, is the better player.

Strung-out - the issue is that I am totally swamped at work. Not sure where Parker is, but I've sent him five articles today that he said he'd be working on...? I'm trying! My boss just quit so my workload has doubled overnight (last week).

Ryan, I see your point as teams are in need of revamping a position but I don't think the Tards needed to revamp the RB spot.
I think, if the Tards had kept James his experience would have helped Wells surpass Hightower on the depth chart, or at least bring a better competition between them. Then the Tards could have release James next year and have two proven backs like most other teams in the NFL now do.

Trolling......
I know but that is how this site started too so don't get pissed off.
I need another writer for my blog. As I can tell with this blog, when one person is basically posting all of the content it gets overwhelming.
Visit www.the12thhawk.blogspot.com and check my profile. E-mail me some writing samples or reference your online material and I will tell you what I think. The12thHawk is for trash talk with people and meaningful content.
So start submitting guys...
Thanks.
