After months of hearing people talk about TJ Houshmandzadeh, I consistently made the argument that they were making a mountain out of a molehill. Sure, he talks a bit of trash, but that's just "swagger," that's healthy for the team. Yeah, I want my stud wide-out to predict a pro-bowl, a playoff run, top five numbers. I like that, it's good for the team and its fun for the fans. Sure, he could've kept his mouth shut about the Madden rating, but come on, that was blown way out of proportions.

I'm starting to change my tune.

I had never been a proponent of the Hawks bringing Houshmandzadeh in, but when he was in Seattle and nearly signing I got star struck and decided it was a great thing. I still think it may be a good thing, but Mr. "Trust Me, I'm Underrated" needs to keep his damn mouth shut when it comes to talking about in-game performance and his team. Last Wednesday, Housh claimed he would be open 95% of the time against the Bears secondary, and I sort of chuckled it off like, no big deal. And really, it wasn't a big deal, except that on Sunday, he was all but shut down. How did he respond to getting embarassed by the Bears?

"I was open all game. They just didn't throw me the ball."

Really? Or maybe you thought you were open but it wasn't worth the risk of making a mistake because the QBs don't trust you yet? Maybe it takes time for chemistry to click and talking like that isn't going to anything to help? Seneca Wallace even said in the post-game presser that he was trying to get the ball to Houshmandzadeh. You shouldn't have to try to find one guy, that's when you make mistakes. If he is open he should get the ball, if he's not, he should not, but it shouldn't be a wild goose chase to find a 6'3" receiver in an electric lime jersey. That kinda sticks out like a sore thumb.

And then there was the issue with what Housh said the other day about Matt, essentially questioning his quarterback's toughness. There are a hundred angles to take on this, but they pretty much all lead to the same thing: STOP TALKING.

It's tempting to tell Housh to "Put up or shut up," but I think it might be time to go one step further.

Shut up. Then play. If you don't like how the game is going, play better. But really, please, shut up.

You go Chris! Finally someone writing an article telling that man to be quiet. He either needs to put up or shut up.

I agree. When he fumbled in our own territory on Sunday, I was like, "Is this what he was talking mad trash about all week?" What a loser.
Agreed

During the preseason, when every team is thinking rosy and every team still has a chance, this kind of bravado is ok because you want your team confident going into the year.

Now, Housh just sounds like a petulant, clueless WR diva that we have seen on lots of other teams in the NFL. His comments show that he is thinking about himself and not the team. Perhaps he is kicking himself for signing with the Hawks instead of the vikings, and this is his way of expressing it. Regardless, he needs to shut his mouth. He is extremely well-paid to make plays for the Hawks, not talk out his ass. So shut up TJ, call out yourself for your terrible game, not your teammates. Nice fumble yesterday btw.

He needs to start walkin' the walkin' and stop running his mouth! I cannot believe he said he was open all day. Even if he was, why would would a qb want to throw to someone who fumbled?

I wonder what he's like during practice?

Is there a link as to what he said about Matt?
How'd I miss that?
written by Hawktastic, September 28, 2009
Wow...I am stunned that he is thick enough to say he was open all day...but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe the Bears knew that he would drop 4 (or was it more?) passes and fumble one so they left him open as a good player for THEIR team. Maybe they hired him afterall...
Good and Bad

Its hard to rip on him when he makes a catch like he did when Seneca was going out of bounds and threw a free for all that Housh snatched from the hands of the defender. He did make that play, one that in years past i dont think would have been made.

Having said that, he is yet to live up to hype in my mind. Is one play enough to forgive? NO. Its enough to say, maybe if he'd show that kind of determination everytime the ball came his way, he'd get more looks. But it looks to me that everyweek he is a little more complacent when he gets the ball. Instead of just going out and proving that he is what we thought he was.

I was with him up until his Matt comments. Never question the toughness of your QB. It is usually not his call if he gets to play or not, so why question his toughness if he does not play? Not a good way to build a relationship with the guy getting you the ball. He needs to play ever snap like the one where he caught that uncatchable pass. He starts making plays, not fumbling, then he can start talking. Until then, his talk is just writing checks his teamates have to try and cash. Not cool.

I disagree with this in a major way. Yes, Housh may talk off the field which warrants some unabashed criticism, but overall he was open more often than not on Sunday and Seneca couldn't hit him. Obviously, the fumble he had to open the 2nd half was extremely costly, but what about the save he made on Seneca's awful throw into a pack of the Bears secondary? That was easiy a pick for the Bears and he came up the not only the catch, but a 1st down conversion on that play. Both of our QB's have had serious accuracy issues to start this season off. I know everyone in our city loves Hass and would never want to say anything bad about him, but his throws were downright terrible in week 1 and pretty bad in week 2 before his injury. Seneca was off on 1 gimme touchdown to Burleson against the Bears and on another route Housh ran where he was cutting across the middle for an easy 6 pts. It's not like he T.O. or something, so give the guy more than 3 weeks to prove his worth. And Sullivan you said you never were high on us bringing him in to begin with? Well I think you must be high now, to write that. What would you prefer? We don't bring in the best free agent receiver when our teams WR core was crushed last year? It is no wonder other fans in the NFL think we are such twats. We stand behind bad plays and players just because they have been here for several years and bad mouth new Seahawks 3 weeks into the season? Nice work.
For those of you down on Hosh ...

Look, bottom line is (or should be) this: let your performance on the field do the talking. Tell your mouth to STFU.

I 100% fully think the "trash talk" about Chicago not calling him was not a big deal. He just said they didn't contact him when he was a free agnet. The Hasselbeck comment was iffy but I also think people are making a bigger deal out of it than needs to be.

Housh took responsibility for the fumble and the fact that it most likely cost us the game. While that doesn't give us the win, or the ball back its good to see someone act accountable for their actions.

We'll see about the whole "i was open the whole game" thing. Was it just an emotional reaction or a real issue? We will see. TJ was known as the epitome of a team player while in Cincy so I doubt he changes into TO with a move to the west coast. But we will see.

I agree Chris.
I was supporting the guy until recently. I hope he will be more careful about what comes out of his mouth.
There's nothing to gain in criticizing your teammates, so why do it?
On his behalf, he did admit that he may have cost his team the game with his fumble. That comment deserves equal time with all of his others that make many of us angry.

I'm still going to hang tough on liking TJ, but this week was a major blow to my view of him. Mostly the fumble, but also the talking too much about Matt and getting the ball. Let's hope this was a small blip in his successful career in Seattle.
Mostly dissapointed in Mora's comments
written by anthawk, September 28, 2009
Too often the place kicker is considered unworthy to be called a football player. Now Mora throws him under the bus for the loss. Mare cost us six points but Seneca and Housh gave up 10. We lost as a team, period.

So Housh sucks after one fumble that about EVERY NFL player has done at least once....give me a break he is and will be a stud for a long time injuries aside of course (and did everyone see him get his hand taken off by the bears player a few plays earlier I am sure that had alot to do with the fumble). I get really tired of hearing everyone jumping back and forth across the fence. Have faith in your team. We played down right S#@ty last week and came back and dominated a healthy and hot Bears team for good portion of the game. We will be fine for the season everyone please take a chill pill. The Hawks will be dominating by mid season. I am not saying we will definately win next week Indy will be tough but lets not count the Hawks out we are a tough team too. Regardless of what the media says I gaurantee that other teams do not look past us and say there is an easy win. We give them fits you know it and I know it. The season is hardly over it is just beginning we are still only one game down in our division. I am sorry to sound like this but I am sick of hearing how great we are when we win and how bad we are when we lose the season is a marathon not a sprint and I for one would rather finish well then start well (Cards last year...say what you want but they got it done and beat all the other teams that wern't 8-smilies/cool.gif. Get in the playoffs thats all that matters. Once you are in the playoffs everyone is
0-0. You can not tell me that you watched that game yesterday playing with mostly backups and did not feel that when healthy we can beat anyone. Oh and I love Mora's attitude about injuries. "I don't see starters and backups I see football players give me 45 football players and we will show up at 1:05 on Sunday ready to play. If you listen to the players they are buying into that attitude which showed yesterday. Player after player stated how they really felt Mora believed in them. It is also more then talk because players got fairly equal snaps in training camp according to the palyers and they said they noticed that and that it adds creadence to Mora's words. They want to win for him and will bounce back he is a passionate coach and expects passion from his team. And most coach's woudn't simply say it is unacceptable they would fire him and find a new kicker. Most NFL teams will not hesitate to fire a kicker after one bad game. It hasnt happened recently but has happened many time in the past. Mora has appolagized for overreacting but you cannot tell me that when he said it you did not agree with him at least a little bit. Heck even Mara appologized to Seneca for putting him in the position to have to drive down the field for the game winning touchdown that didn't happen. I agree that this is a a team game. But he has one job to do that it make kicks in the NFL kickers are EXPECTED to make those kicks. Gould missed one too but that was a very long range kick Mare's were chip shots by NFL standards. I am not throwing Mare under the bus I think he is a hell of a kicker but those are the facts and we all know it. "He is expected to make those period no excuses no exceptions" However Mora will show his faith in his kicker which he did Sunday by giving him another kick after the 2 misses. Well thank heaven for you guys I have to go. Karate class to teach. Have FAITH and PATIENCE.

I've never been one for a lot of smack talk, but to be honest, I like the fact that our Hawks hate to lose and are showing the emotions and frustrations of losing. I hated listening to the players last year when interviewed after a game and just accepting a loss. We all know that this was a game that we should've won. We had a chance to win it and there is nothing more frustrating than giving a win away. Hopefully this pulls everyone together to play a hell of a game against the Colts.
