Wow, what a disappointing game. Still not quite out of it, but lets get this ol' feature out of the way:
DEFENSE
- Gameball: Lawrence Jackson. Jackson showed up in a big way for his second straight week. He had an early sack, a later sack with a forced fumble, a deflection and two tackles. Wonderful game by Jackson.
- Goat: The rest of the defensive line. The Seahawks were utterly torn up by Frank Gore. Gore is good, but he is not great. To paraphrase Denny Green: He was who we thought he was, and we let him off the hook. Just a poor effort. Losing Mebane proved to be very detrimental. Add to it the loss of Hill and Tatupu and you suddenly have a below-average rush defense.
OFFENSE
- Gameball: Justin Forsett. Jones disappeared, apparently with a minor injury, and Forsett was given a shot he showed up - 5 runs for 35 yards, including a truly impressive run where he dragged three 49ers with him for 5 yards. He also had 6 receptions for 57 yards.
- Goat: Hasselbeck / Vallos. Hasselbeck can not risk his body like that. It was a very bad slide in a situation where he a) wasn't going to score and b) didn't need to score (it was second down). Feet first like a 35-year old Quarterback, please. Vallos because of the poor shotgun snapping. There were two clearly errant snaps, but he was consistently low in Shotgun as he was last week. Unacceptable at this stage, it eats 1/2 second out of every shotgun play, which is a lifetime in the NFL.
SPECIAL TEAMS
- Gameball: Deon Butler: Olindo Mare. Butler wins for the phenomenal play where he downed the ball on the one. I had totally forgotten about that in my rage, so thank you to those who pointed it out.
- Goat: EDIT: Josh Wilson Deon Butler. I had originally put Butler because there wasn't anything special either way on special teams... well, except for the above play. Wilson gets it because, uh, he didn't have a touchdown? Special teams didn't impact this game a whole lot, so really, no one was a goat here. I hope Josh is okay though...
GOAT OF THE DAY
- Jim Mora and Greg Knapp. I like them both, but they were just utterly outcoached today. Knapp's playcalling was just... bad, it didn't make any sense and reminded me of the worst parts of Mike Holmgren (that third and long draw!). It was difficult to see how well or poorly the receivers were covered downfield, and I just have to assume there was excellent coverage, but how many screen plays do we need to see fail before we start stretching the field a bit more. Mora did not make the necessary adjustments at the half.
