The best team in the NFC West right now is the San Fransisco 49ers. Hard to argue with that. The best team in the AFC West, at least by record, is the Denver Broncos. The worst team in the NFC South is the Carolina Panthers. Two points:

  1. The 49ers have the 0-3 Panthers 1st Round pick in 2010.
  2. The Seahawks have the 3-0 Broncos 1st Round pick in 2010.

This scenario looked mightily different on April 25. Mind you, I think there is a very, very good chance that the Broncos go 3-8 looking ahead to their schedule, but, y'know... damn.

THe NFL regular season is 17 weeks long. A lot can, and will, happen in that time. Dont worry, the Niners will spend next years pick on Crabtree--and Singletary will put him on injured reserve to teach him a lesson! HA!

Anyway, as long as our pick is in the top 20, it was still a great trade. We dont really have cap room for two high picks anyway. And despite the Niners beating the tar out of us, we have way more talent, player-wise, than they do. They have a ways to go to catch up. Now if only our coaches would do as good a job as Singletary...

Am I alone in feeling like this upcoming draft is going to be one of the most important in our team's history? Draft well, we can be competitive again for years, draft poorly and we might find ourselves back in the early to mid 90s. Our stars from the Super Bowl are either gone, or in the twilights of their careers.

I hate to think about the draft during week 3 of the season, but I can't help it. We need to either replace or find the eventual replacements some very important players for the team - especially if we are drafting in the top one-third again.

Come on Denver, start losing!!!!

No worries. Denver won't keep this up for long.

I think the point about the cost of high draft picks is a good one. As nice as it would be to have a top five pick again I don't think Seahawk management or ownership really wants to pay another Curry-type contract. If either the Seahawks or the Broncos have picks in the 10-20 range it would be fine. Then, if you absolutely have to go up and get someone at the top of the draft, you can package both. But you just want to stock up on first round talent -- which is what they really need to do -- mid round picks are probably preferred. Two top ten picks and they'd probably have to shed star players elsewhere to pay them.

Thanks for the great news...this season has just been full of great news...feel the sarcasm.

Do the 49ers get an additional 1st round pick if Crabtree doesn't sign this season and goes back into the draft? Or do they just get a 3rd round compensatory pick? That would suck if they ended up with three first round picks next year.

I trust san frans GM to mess this up some how. Even with top 10 picks which are normally shoe ins for solid at worst NFL starters, the 9ers still manage to screw up every draft. Their team is built mainly thru free agency.

I'm a little worried about Denver. I dont doubt it will be a top 10 pick but they do get to play the Chiefs twice and the Raiders once more, and if they keep pulling game winning plays out their butts it may turn into a top 15 pick.

IMO Carolina is too talented to end up picking somewhere in the top 10. Maybe they get Garcia to take over for Delhomme and they start to win. But that will not be a top 10 pick for San Fran.

FANARC-I think that depends on what happens with the tampering charges. Normally, if Crabtree were to reenter the draft, the original team that drafted him would not get any compensation. However, if the tampering charges do reveal that someone (the Jets are who the tampering charges are currently filed against), then they may get compensation.

Not that long ago San Francisco was found to have tampered with Lance Briggs, and lost a 3rd round pick and also traded 5th round picks with the Bears. Roger Goodell said that had anything more happened that did, their punishment would have been even more severe.

I think Carolina's season really hangs on Delhomme's level of play. If they pick p Garcia and he is the Garcia of old, it could spark them. Could be Garcia's last hurrah.

Isn't the 2010 season looking to be uncapped? If it turns out that way then it doesn't really matter if we have high first round picks. Paul Allen definitely has enough money for it
