Hey Addicts.
This article will serve as my post game comments but before anyone reads further, I want to give you heads up that it's highly opinionated and I'm not pulling any punches. Some of you guys who have thin skin or are already bashing at the team, coaches, and front office might want to consider whether you want to read past the alert below knowing where I usually stand on these matters. Some of you who have suggested that you're going to skip reading my pieces from now on maybe should consider starting with this one if you haven't started already rather than reading on and raising your blood pressure. I don't want anyone to hurt themselves.
As first written, this article was a scathing piece where I was determined to blast the skin off anyone who was giving up on the team after just one loss but I waited until I cooled down some and re-wrote parts of it to tone it down some. What's left is still going to blister some fans but will leave the skin largely intact. Read on at your own peril but I'll give you a heads up when it's about to turn ugly.
First of all let's talk about Sunday's game against the 49er's. We stunk it up alright for the most part. I think everyone has already painted that picture pretty well from Chris's analysis to all the comments from you Addicts. Much of the criticism was deserved but to your credit, some of you gave a lot of reasons why the game got out of hand instead of just mindlessly lashing out at everyone connected with the team without really considering the factors as some of you did. Some of you exercised your cursing skills and used foul language liberally to display all the frustrations the game brought out in you. That's OK.
Let's consider the situation as it happened from my perspective. To continue reading this article please press "Read more" below.First of all, it was a record hot day in San Francisco. Into the 90's and being close to the water, humid to boot. That kind of heat will zap your energy faster than the dry desert heat will and the Seahawks have had days in Arizona when the heat just sapped their strength and made it difficult to find the energy to play with. A lot of you guys commented that the team seemed to lack energy. That's one reason no one seems to be considering. Of course, someone pointed out right away that the 49er's had to play in it too but that's their home field and their home conditions that they're more used to than we are just like the rain and wind at Qwest field which is always considered to be a factor in our favor.
The injuries as they happened one by one just seemed to take the wind out of our sails a little bit at a time. As we lost Tatupu, Locklear, Wilson, Griffin, and then Hasselbeck, each one took a bite out of the team's heart which had already been nicked by the loss of starters Walter Jones, Brandon Mebane, Leroy Hill, Deion Branch, Chris Spencer, and Marcus Trufant but then to get torched by Gore not once but twice knowing that maybe had Tatupu been in there healthy, it would have been different, had to take it's toll on the team even more and make the day seem insufferable in the heat and humidity. I'm sure the team and even the coaches were a bit shell-shocked by the events as they unfolded. Seneca certainly wasn't prepared to go in and lead the team for a half a game just as most backup quarterbacks in the league don't get a lot of reps and have the game plan revolve around them as they prepare for an opponent. Next week, Seneca will be a different quarterback.
Of course, all us fans who would have folded in the pregame warm-ups in that kind of heat and humidity and who would have been just wailing at the injustice of all the losses of our key players can sit here in our comfortable bars and homes watching the game and say that they should have manned up and just played through it like nothing happened as if we could have done that if it was us out there. Who are you kidding! That was tough Sunday and although the team didn't handle the adversity as well as we had hoped they would, how many teams in the league missing 10 of their starters would have just bucked up and played a great game and pulled off a win under these circumstances? I know that's a question that can't be answered but my speculation is not many. Certainly not the Seahawks in their second game with all new schemes and under a new head coach and coordinators. Did we really expect them to blast out of the chute under the new regime and be totally awesome without a hitch or two along the way? Did we? Maybe we did and the bubble just got burst last Sunday.
Some of you thought Knapp was stupid for calling a draw play when they were at 3rd and 17 but didn't consider that at the time, the 49er's had the momentum going their way and a downfield pass might have been an easy target for an interception with that kind of pressure and the Seahawks a bit flustered. The Seahawks elected to run it and then punt playing it safe instead of potentially giving the 49er's the ball with a short field to work with and possibly posting another score and putting us further behind the eight ball. It was a call that was designed to lose a battle but allow the Seahawks to maybe go on to win the war. At the time, we weren't out of the game and it would have been an unnecessary risk to throw a 20 yard pass given how the two teams were playing at the time. I don't see it as a stupid decision.
I don't see how Knapp could be considered so good against the Rams and then be so bad against the 49er's as some of you make out. Some of you pointed to his record in a negative way but he's had a top ten rushing game wherever he's been. You can't call him out after just two games in the first season we've implemented his scheme. His track record gives him the right to have a little more respect than that and to be given more time to get it going. I know most of you know that too.
Most of the above conditions and situations were brought up by you Addicts in the comments that followed the game. I say kudos to you guys who saw through the pain and frustration and decided to keep yourself on an even keel and consider the ramifications of everything that happened before going off half cocked and just blasting at everyone and everything in sight like some people did. There were extenuating circumstances in Sunday's game from the heat to the injuries to some poor plays by a couple of important cogs in the wheel. It all added up to the loss but it isn't the end of the trail yet like some of you would have the rest of us believe it is.
I think most of us when we're not wallowing in self pity and feeling sorry for ourselves because our team lost Sunday would admit that this team has much better backups than we had last year and we're more prepared to suffer injuries. Given a week to prepare Seneca Wallace with a game plan centered on his abilities, the team should be able to be competitive against the Bears at Qwest Field. You couldn't have said that about last year's team because our depth was such a big issue. We have enough players this year to field a team with a chance. That's progress sports fans whether you want to admit it or not.
And now comes the part some of you aren't going to like so well. Here's a good place to stop if you don't like to hear about disloyal fans and stuff. If you're a glutton for punishment though and don't like to hear about disloyal fans, read on.
I saw comments that blasted Mora, Knapp, Ruskell, Houshmandzadeh, Burleson, JJones, Vallos, Babineaux, and Wallace. Some of those had some valid points to make but some of them were just mean minded and disrespectful of those players. Some comments suggested that the Seahawks are done this year and inferred we should just pack it in already. I guess they think we should just tuck our tails between our legs and forfeit all the rest of our games. Here's where I start to take exception with some of the fans.
No wonder Seattle has a reputation of having fans who will jump ship at the drop of a pin. One good win and one loss with 10 starters out, and some of you guys are already crying that we're done for the year and that we'll have a higher pick than Denver in 2010 as well as essentially indicating that you're bailing out after only the second game of the season. You want your team to buck up and play tough but you want to be a leaf in the wind with no backbone as a fan? How does that work? Your team has to play tough but you can wimp out and bail just like that? Some of you had some pretty vile things to say about the team but I think it says a lot more about you than it does the team. This is the watered down version of this paragraph. You should have seen the original cut. It would have blistered the paint off an ocean liner.
Now before everyone who said a discouraging word at all gets all in an uproar, I understand that it's tough to watch a game like that and not say some negative stuff about the team when they lose like they did Sunday. I had some words too about how they played and some of the decisions that were made. That's understandable and a lot of you guys also tempered those comments with some good things to say too or declared that you're still behind the team and that we have to go back and work harder to iron out the problems. That' all just fine. This isn't about you real fans who are sticking with the team through hard times and just blowing off some steam.
Please notice I'm aiming what follows at those guys who declared that the team is done for the season or the ones who said Ruskell made a big mistake in drafting Curry or picking up Housh in free agency and that the whole team is going to be a big failure after just the second game when the team is still 1 - 1 in league play. That's a ludicrous position to take after just the second game when no one is on IR yet and all our players still figure to be back at some time during the season. It's just way to early to be declaring that kind of stuff and totally unjustified after just two games. Those are the guys I'm calling out so you die hard fans who were just letting off some steam, relax. I understand and this isn't about you so don't be busting my chops.
As far as Curry is concerned, Ruskell did what he had to do and that was take the best player in the draft who had already fallen past three teams (who are going to rue the day they passed on him) and most likely the only player who would have been a top 5 pick in any year's draft. Almost everyone agreed with it at the time and almost everyone would have made that choice had it been theirs to make on draft day. Now, when the perception is that Curry just stood around without any fire in Sunday's game and he missed a couple of tackles in just his second game, after being called a beast in his first outing, Ruskell is being painted as being stupid to select him when he could have had Sanchez or Maualuga or name your player by some fans. That is totally unrealistic but also totally expected. Everyone loves to have their say after hindsight kicks in and Maualuga has had two good games and Curry only one. Wow, time to make a judgement after just two games in their respective careers in the NFL. Anyone who thinks Curry is a bust at this stage or that Maualuga is a sure thing for that matter of fact really doesn't know much about the game of football and especially about player development.
Some armchair quarterbacks are nothing but a bag of complaints ready to explode and spray paint the situation with huge amounts of criticism without offering anything of substence as a solution. I really don't mind a well thought out piece of criticism followed by a well thought out solution or alternative course of action that might take care of the problem at hand but to just whine about a problem without any solution makes you part of that problem not part of any kind of solution.
The Seahawks aren't dead yet by any stretch of the imagination and some of you guys are way premature with all these negative rants that are just whiny crap because you feel sorry for yourselves that you believed in the team and you think they let you down and now you've labeled them as done for the season. How pathetic! Can you imagine if the team came to work at practice for the Bears game with that kind of attitude? They will come in and do their damnedest to buck up and prepare to meet the Bears because they're professional football players and men not crybabies who crumble at one loss no matter how terrible it may seem. They're going to come in and watch the game film, take their criticism like a man, and leave the film room with a resolve to fix the problems that hit them at San Francisco. Then they'll take the field and start preparing for the task of beating the Bears not roll over dead like some of their fans did this weekend. Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves. You know who you are.
Now you guys who think it's all over already go ahead and identify yourselves by responding to this article and let everyone know which type of fan you are but maybe you'd be better off to just lay low and tuck your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye after just the second week of the season. However, the Seahawks aren't going to give up that easy. The real fans won't either. Bitching about losing is one thing but really getting down on the team, Mora and his coaches, and Ruskell at this point over just one game with some of the scathing remarks I saw is just gutless whining. The team knows what happened and they know what they have to do to fix it. They don't need their faces and reputations rubbed in the dirt. Especially not by some whiny fan who would buckle before the warm-ups were even over if they tried to play in that game.
I'm sure I've ruffled some feathers again but I think they needed ruffling. I can't wait to hear the responses that proclaim that they can criticize the team all they want, it's a free country, I criticize anyone who disagrees with me, I can't see the handwriting on the wall but they can, I have a mancrush on Ruskell, my articles are way too long, yada, yada, yada....
As always, I call it as I see it and to heck with the consequences. If enough of you at any time don't want to read my particular brand of writing like where I call out the unfaithful and part timers who can't appreciate what it takes to stick with a team through thick and thin somewhat like a marriage that vows to stay together for better or worse, I'm always willing to bow out and spend my time doing all the things that I have to put off in my life because of the inordinate amout of time I spend writing for the Addicts and now running the weekly contest. It's really not a problem with me whatsoever trust me. Every time I mention it though, I get a rash of fans who say they like my writing just fine and to keep writing so I always end up sticking around. Hit me with your best shot if I've offended you or struck a nerve with this article but be aware that will probably label you as one of the bandwagoners who is currently off the bandwagon and given up on the team prematurely. Of course, I always like hearing that some of you like what I write too. If you guys think I'm wrong to call out those fans who give up on the team after two games and a 1 - 1 record, tell me about it. If you guys are behind my sentiments, I'd like to hear about that too.
I'll leave you with this. Go ahead and place yourself where you want to be seen as a Seahawk fan by others with your response. Me, I want to be known as someone who supports my team whether they win or lose especially when they lose and need my support the most. I want the team to know that I still believe they can be winners and I'll be behind them no matter what as long as they are still giving it all they have. I want them to know I'm not going to turn into a snarling dog and be a backbiter and call them names behind their back and withdraw my support just because they lost a game or like in last years case, blew a season due to circumstances beyond their control. I put my money where my mouth is too by having kept my season tickets for 34 years now when the team was 2 - 12 as well as when they were 13 - 3. That's who I want to be known as. Solid as a rock and someone they can count on 100%. I may bitch along the way but I'll never be the one to say they're done after just two games in a 16 game season. I challenge you guys to show what kind of fans you are too or let us know that we have to check both sides of the fence to find where you are at any given moment in time. You know which side to find me on.
Look for my game preview of the Bears game on Thursday and the weekly contest posting on Friday.
Hasta,
BillT

We possibly could go into the by week 1-3. I still will root for the Seahawks every week. I love Mora's philosophy that we are trying to win this one game. We are not worried about the playoffs or Super Bowl.
The 49ers next 6 weeks of scheduling is horrible. I see them walking out with a 3-5 or possibly 4-4 record. That gives us the ability to catch up with them and also have our revenge when they come to Qwest field.
I for one saw what you are saying Bill when I went to the Cardinals game last year at Qwest field. Everyone around me gave up after half time and got completely drunk. They were talking about their lives and what not. When the Seahawks made a good play they would say, "Yah, now back to my day." I was embarrassed for them. My wife and I stood up and started yelling and was asked by a Seahawks fan behind us to sit down. I was shocked.
My point being that the true fans need to get off their couches and sober up! Cheer loudly for your team and I guarantee you the best of this team has not even played yet. Super Bowl year we started out 2-2 and never looked back.
ARISE 12th man where ever you are!!!!!!!!!

1. Seneca Wallace is a great fit for the new offensive scheme to cover while Hass is recovering. In fact, Sunday could be VERY exciting with his athletic skills in this offense (at Qwest!)! He is a capable and proven back-up that always just needs a bit of repetition. It could be A LOT worse.
2. The RB corp is in tact. Edgerin and Forsett will only get better. Not like Forsett got worse this week, right?
3. The WR corp will have more experience and big play capability with our starting #1 back (I know it is always hopeful with Branch...). But, it is hope...
4. Locklear may have gone down, but he is about to be replaced by the best LT to ever play the game - can you say run left - he is going to protect and create big gaps on the left side. Imagine Forsett hiding behind Jones!!
5. The OL will have another week to improve - Spencer can only help with the snaps and power game :-) he may not be the smartest center in the league, but he is an athletic and physical beast. He sprinting 20 yards down field when he got hurt.
6. Carlson is one of the best TE in the game. He hasn't gone anywhere.
That is the offense...look at the bright side!
Finally, we are returning to Qwest and that can only help!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, we all needed Sunday night to drop our heads in disappointment, but it is Tuesday now, get on your blues and start thinking about this weekend, a chance to punish Cutler at Qwest. Love me some turnovers. :-)
12th man pride at 2-0 or 1-1. Get over it, it is only one loss. Did you see Candlestick, the place was a third empty. Bring the noise...
GO HAWKS!

12th man pride at 2-0 or 1-1. Get over it, it is only one loss (how many teams have gone 16-0). I would be more concerned if the heat and injuries hadn't existed and we just stunk under a new regime.
Did you see Candlestick, the place was a third empty. So, let's bring the noise and support on Sunday...

I'm still in San Francisco. The fans here were horrible. My tickets were 35 dollars and there were open seats everywhere. By far the trashiest fans in the NFC West. No character. I wish I could explain this better but I can't without too many explicative words flying out of my mouth. I wish I could take all the people that continually talk negatively about our team and show them what a "winning" experience in San Francisco feels like. It's NOTHING like winning at Qwest.
That said.
We still have a competitive team with the BEST stadium in the NFL. What more could we ask for as fans. I feel truly blessed after the mid 90's to have what we have in Seattle. Unfortunately, in this world, some people are just too selfish to realize there are people way more intelligent about how to run a football team than them.
At the end of the day, I know who the fake fans are. So do you Bill T. and I love that you keep hitting them where it hurts. Cuz I don't want them booing next to me during home games.
Can't wait for next Sunday!

I thought you said earlier under your old name of Durteehawk you were done with this "crap factroy" blog, something most of us were only too glad to hear. Please leave your childish insults elsewhere, it brings nothing to the table of the football discusions we are having and its trashy.

I'll take our guys with Seneca and give us a good shot to beat the Bears, who get to meet the 12th man. I don't think that Jay "Pouter" Cutler has ever met us. We need to be there. The defense, hopefully including Mebane, will be up to the task no matter who is playing MIKE backer or nickel back. Lets be glad that Larry Fitz isn't in the house this week, or Reggie Wayne, etc. Slim Jennings can get the job done this week, don't doubt it! This is his chance to confirm his improvement and make the plays. He'll practice all week as the starter opposite Lucas. Hawthorne will be ready, Big Walt, fingers crossed, will be ready.
If we can win with/without Hasselbeck this game will be huge for momentum, confidence, and team success in 2009.
written by C.Wallace, September 22, 2009
it was to hot, Wallace no snaps and then you blame the fan for not being happy that they look so bad. teams loose but we still expect them to play hard and want to win.
if this is the type of junk that you write then mabe i need to find a better site that dose not blame the fan when the team looks like a bad high school team!
written by Seattle Sam, September 22, 2009
And under everything there were some positives, who knew jackson would step up like this? and i think forsett will be getting the play 50% of the time or more by the end of the season and he will turn this run team around. and jennings is starting to look more and more like 2008 was a fluke and seems to be improving. bad games happen, lets just move on and not forget that looking at our home schedule we should win 6 or 7 games just cause its at qwest field, we can do this, lets go hawks!
written by Ocho, September 22, 2009
That concern doesn't mean we aren't fans. I will never root for another team, but I am disappointed in the team's effort.

So i know fans of teams like the raiders and the lions and I would just like to say that they don't abandon their team after one loss. Or 5 losing seasons like they get.
So you are completely right to write this article. People need to grow some balls and roll with the punches.
Also, the people who criticize you for writing this article or who screamed and cried when we didn't win the other day need to just leave because this is a SEAHAWK ADDICTS site. And others need not be here. Let them go to espn and try and glean whatever they can from the barren wastelands of seahawk info at those sites. Because I for one appreciate what you and your fellow contributers here have put together.
Thank You and Go Hawks!!!!

When you go to a game, and the Hawks are getting their butts kicked, you can still have fun by hurling insults at all of the millionaires. That's also part of being a fan.
written by Hawkgirl, September 22, 2009
I get this is a fan site but there should be a balance of comments that are welcomed. I've been reading this blog for some time now and it's a big lead up to how great we're going to be and then when we're not, a huge list of reasons why we're not. In other words, some serious denial. Regardless of injury, humidity, time zone, etc., if you're a good team you find a way to win. If Indy can win a game where they only had the ball for less than :15 minutes in heat and humidity, somehow I think we should be able to overcome obtacles too.

I agree with Hawkgirl, R-rated post is exactly that.
I love this blog with the exception of your articles Bill. I click on it at least four to five times a day. You need to study how articles are written by columnist. Go read how Art Theil forms an opinion. Read some columns on ESPN by Chris Sando. Hell, read some articles from Chris Sullivan and Michael Steffes. They've got it down. Your articles are completely uninformative and baseless without any real research. Even when you write an opinionated article, your articles are too personal and emotional. How the editor of this website still keeps you on is amazing. Even if I forget to check the author of an article on this website, I can always tell it's yours by how amateur it sounds. If you want to be a columnist, practice and research how other people write theirs. Then you'll be in a respected position to blast the readers on this website for their opinions. Until then you sound just like us, except the editor gives you a front page, and we get to respond in the comment section. I know what you're thinking, I'm not a true fan of this website, because I'm blasting you Bill. On the contrary, I'm doing more for the website by calling you out on your horrible writing style, then mindless going along with mediocrity. That's what fans are supposed to do. Kudos to you Chris, Michael (when he still contributed), and Mike. When I see your names on the articles, I'll definitely enjoy the read. When I notice your name Bill, I'll be sure to pass on it until you can prove you know how to write a well informed, emotionally removed, and opinionated article.
On to the Seahawks!
Part of being a fan is to boo and let your team know that you don't support their play. That's the only way change happens. If we don't mindlessly give them our money, then they'll know we didn't support the way they played. "Real" fans need to get used to others calling out their team. I've been a life long Hawk fan as far back as I can remember, but I'm not going to stand by and hand over support and money for bad, and uninspiring play. That's just foolish. Bill, people have a right to their opinion of the Seahawks. With as much as people work and have limited discretionary income and time, to receive a mediocre performance is unacceptable. Seahawk fans will remember last year when they beat the Jets with half of our team composed of backups. They played with heart. If a team plays with heart and loses fans will forgive them. They play emotionless like Sunday, fans will kill them. When I show up on Sunday to watch the game, that's all I want to see is an inspiring heart filled game (with the occasional brutal hit on the QB by Kearny) and as long as they give it their best shot. I'm sorry, that's not what we saw on Sunday. Fans should be angry and call out the Seahawks. There's a reason why the Hawks are labeled as a soft team, and I'm tired of it. Sunday proved it yet again. Besides 2005 (maybe 2006 & 2007), the franchise as a whole has never showed real mental toughness through adversity. Bill, that is being reasonable and calling it as it is. That's the way a fan should be. I cringe when people tell me they follow their team through thick and then. That's foolish. Put a good product out there on the field, then I'll give my important and valued time, money, and fanaticism. Don't, well, I have family (a new baby boy) and work that needs my time more then a mediocre football team. I'll watch when they perform with heart and integrity. Then I'll show up win or lose. That's reasonable. That's what should be expected. I'll watch off and on for the rest of the season when I have time, because I love the Hawks. But if the performance continues like this, sorry, it's just a football game. Life is more important.
Thanks for letting me add my two cents.
Sincerely,
Bjorn Jonasson

First of all I am glad to see another fan from Alaska. I was raised up in Ketchican and moved to Seattle area when I was 10. Joined the Navy and have been looking back ever since. I am recently stationed in Florida where I have to go to the local bar to see the games. During the 49er game I had to deal with a lot of Band Wagon Fans who didnt start out watching the game until Frank Gore had his Big Run. I gotta say if you look at the Seahawks stats and take away two plays (yes both Gores runs), they really held their own, and did not play that poorly. I can see how a run like that could be demoralizing, but for some reason, I could not give up hope until after they didnt convert on 4th down. Now, That game is in the past. Learn from it and move on. I am a realist. All I expected for this team this year was a strong push for .500. Win Eight. Thats all I want. I think they have it in them to do it if they stay healthy. They gave up two embarrassing plays and still had a chance to get back in it in the 4th. I gotta agree with HawkGirl as well though. Good teams find a way to win, no matter what. This is not a good team...YET! Bill, if I were you I would delete a message everytime that FU@$ Stick commented. He is not making any valid points other than slandering you. He could at least keep his comments Seahawks related. Have a Fine Navy Day.

-the personal stuff is pretty lame. Someone needs to grow up.
- Bill, I'm curious what kind of article you would write had coach Mora or one of the players used the heat and humidity as an excuse for poor play. I'm sorry, that was pretty weak man. I could understand if things really bogged down later in the game, but it appeared to me there was a lack of energy right out of the gate. Injuries maybe... but weather? really?
-some of the comments I read looked like they were not written by Hawk fans, but perhaps fans of other teams. Just saying.
-I totally agree with Bjorn. Play hard and lose, I can live with that. But play like Sunday, and you deserve criticism... and I'm sure the coaching staff is taking care of that even as I type.
-This team can still have a good season. Look no further than the Cards last year. No true fans are giving up, just upset, and justifiably so. Next week we'll all be optimistic and fired up. GO HAWKS!!!

I too am an ESPN transfer like G. Miller. On those blogs there are so many bad fans that a post about a free agent pick up becomes a discussion about why the 9ers are better than the Hawks because they have 5 rings. After hawk fans finish reminding 9er fans the last time they had a wining season American Idol was in its first season, I would bring up this point: Seahawk fans are a different breed than all other NFCW fans because we don’t have the ring. It is easy to be a 9er or Steelers fans. Any time you have an argument about anything to do with football, you can fall back on “our team has more rings than your so I win” argument. Or your team has a bad couple of seasons; you can still look back on the good old years when your team was wining it all. I believe this is what makes Seattle sports fans so special. With the Sonics now playing in OKC, our only team with a championship is now a sore subject not a source of pride. As Seattle fans we don’t have the ring or history of other teams that won rings while playing in an NFL that only had a fraction of the teams playing in today’s league. What do I mean by this?
Well, my best two Seattle sports memories are the 95 M’s Yanks series where I lost my voice on an Edgar base hit that drove home Griffey (we went on to lose to the Indians) and the SB XL appearance. My best memories are not of winning the championship, but of the incredible ride that was the season build up to those games. Bandwagon fans cherish winning and championships. Real fans cherish the ride. The ups and downs. The offseason. This is why Seattle fans are the best fans by far in the NFCW and should be considered among the best in the NFL. We are committed to our team and not because they have won X amount of rings. We are committed to our team, the home team, the Seahawks.
That is not to say we don’t have our own flaws. We had and still have bandwagon fans from the SB year. Fans used to winning the West by default every year. Fans that only know the Seahawks with Holmy as the HC. I don’t know where I am going with this but every team is going to have diehard fans and bandwagoners. I think the problem you’re having BillT is that you want to draw a line in the sand that says this site is only for true fans with loyalty to the Seahawks. There are so many shades of grey in fan hood that doing so can be a daunting task. Trying to set criteria for what makes a diehard fan and what makes a bandwagoner will drive you insane. Even the biggest band wagon fan will not admit to it and thus trying to exclude fans that are not up to snub is futile task and will anger some fans like F stick. Other fans have other responsibilities in their life that distracts them from the team. Your headed down the wrong path if that was your objective.
I like the message of your post that criticizing the Hawks play while giving no solution or suggestion only adds to the problem. I did not like your assertion that because we personally could not step in a get through pre game warm ups, we had no place to talk. I am sorry, but the reason we are fans and not players is because we were not born with the skills required to be professional athletes. By default we become fans. One of my Xbox friends is a Miami fan. He has spent his life in a wheel chair and plays Madden only using his left hand (anybody who has played knows it takes both or some serious talent with one to be competitive). Did he not have the right to criticize the fins after the 1-15 season because he personally could not have done better? I am probably nit picking but the logic behind that statement is flawed. I do understand your frustration with trolls that want to write off the 09 season after 2 games. 2 games do not a season make. Fans only being able to criticize if they themselves could do pre game warm ups or, to a greater extent, do better than the actual players, is not the best way to start your argument in my opinion.

I feel like this post is designed to get fans that ripped the Seahawks after that piss poor performance to apologize for something that needs no apology, just as I did not need to apologies earlier today, but felt obligated to. As hawk girl and Bjorn have noted the post is titled R rated post. The idea being to let out your frustration in what ever way needed. If that is not the function of that post then we need to change the title and the commentary at the beginning. Sometimes that means analyzing what is wrong and intelligently looking for solutions to the problem. Sometimes fans just need to vent about what they saw. (Personally I vented by yelling at the TV after the 3rd and forever HB Draw that I could have gone another 10 years without seeing) I took a shot at Curry for being so energetic in front of the home crowd in a game that we were most likely to win while not showing much energy or enthusiasm in the 9ers game. I still think I have a valid point. How can a player be so night and day when it comes to intensity? When we are playing an opponent that is not one of the worst in the league are you not going to bring the smack talk and bouncy energy? I am not calling him a bust or wish TR drafted someone else. I am a fan who wants to know more about what happened on Sunday.
I am listed under the writers for this site (something I am VERY proud of) but only write occasionally about the Seahawks as it relates to Madden. I have a passion for both. I agree that we should strive to be the best Seahawks blog out there. Part of that is having an interactive site that reaches out to fans. Along the way there will be trolls, spammers, haters, and hypocrites that respond. This was an issue that was bound to come up eventually, and calling out those who took shots at the team was probably in order. However, we all know who the die hard fans on the site are. You know who they are because you recognize their name and see them comment on a regular basis on this site. Ignore them and eventually it will not be worth it for them to keep posting and will move on. It works on 5 year olds. These guys posting the hater stuff are around that in mental age.
Ps: I think what separates your writing from the other writers is what makes your contribution special. Sando, Oneal, Farnsworth and others can keep us up on the Hawks with informative, non bias reporting. You take the stance of a fan in your writing with all the bias that comes with it. Your articles have great insight and information but you’re kidding yourself if you think they are free of what I call fanhood bias. I hope you take that as a complement as that is how I mean for it to be perceived. It is an original way of posting news about the Seahawks and I always look forward to your analysis.

Everyone else, thanks for your comments. As I said before, you can say whatever you want as long as you keep it civil. By the way, anyone who wants to contact Chris and complain about my qualifications to be writing here is welcomed to do so. You're also welcome to not read my articles because it's a free world. However, it's not a vulgar one unless we give a post the R rated sanction.
Some of you obviously didn't understand from my article that I was only calling out those so called fans who have already quit on the team after just two games. It was clearly stated in the article in more than one place. If you went on record with a bunch of disparaging remarks or vulgar remarks in the R rated post after the game but still remained a Seahawk supporter as most of you said they did in their comments made here today, this wasn't directed at you anyway. It was soley directed at those who have given up on the team after two games with them owning a 1 - 1 record and only one loss. However, if the shoe fits, thanks for letting the rest of us know where you stand.... or should I say where you don't stand.

Oh, and thank you for confirming my point that you just can't take the criticism. If my name is considered to be unacceptable then fine but YOU specifically had my post removed (or removed it yourself if Chris is stupid enough to give you admin rights)because you didn't like what I said about you. You really only deleted those comments because you don't want you loyal(stupid) followers to see how bad I made you look. I will say this again for those who didn't get to see it earlier...
Aren't you in Alaska anyway?
Your an over the hill blowhard who has the insight of a surly drunk on a bar stool, waiting for Moose hunting season to start.
Have fun sinking this site. Maybe you can recommend the name of a good deep sea salvage company, seeing as how they are so abundant up in AK.

Related to next weeks game, I would really like to see what Mora and Seneca can do together. Doesn't Seneca remind anyone else of a certain QB that led a Mora coached team to the playoffs? I know Hass is our starter, and he deserves to be, but it would be interesting to see what mora could do with a another mobile QB who, in my mind, makes better QB decisions.

That comment is perfectly acceptable. See how easy that is? No bad language in either your userid or your post. I welcome your posts and you can say whatever you like about me as long as you keep the foul language out of it.
Just so you know, I do have admin rights and I'm the one who is deleting your posts only because of the foul language not because of any content or disagreements with me. A couple of other posters have blasted me in their comments made about this article and I haven't touched them because they were clean of foul language and attacking the content not me personally. As I said, say what you want as long as you keep it clean and keep the personal attacks out of it. One poster had a lot to say about my poor journalistic skills for example. No problem whatsoever.
I can assure you that Chris will back me in this 100%. None of the writers here at SA want foul language in any posts unless we open that particular post up to be an R rated post. Even then it's expected that you don't go after any individual in a personal attack. I have his confidence to determine the content of my articles. In this article, so far I have 1000 hits and the comments are running about 10 to 1 in favor of my position. You can take that for what it's worth. I take it to mean most fans don't think much of anyone who quits on the team after two games.
This article wasn't written just about Seahawk Addict readers but Seahawk fans in general. I read posts by people at ESPN, NFC West blog, Seahawks Insider, and other blogs and there were some at each site that had given up on the team or were demanding that Ruskell and Mora be fired immediately and saying they weren't going to attend any more games because this was a loser franchise that was going nowhere and so forth and so on. That blew me away. Blowing off steam is one thing but wanting to destroy the franchise while in the midst of a season and starting over after only two games isn't a position I could support under just about any circumstances.
I write about what grabs my attention and I call them as I see them. Sometimes you might agree with my position, other times not. Either way, as long as you keep your reply civil and to the point, you're perfectly welcome to take whatever position you want and relfect that in your comments. Try me out and see if it isn't like that. Just don't use foul language or personal attacks.

Let me add also the inevitable confusions of implementing a new system on both sides of the ball, a guy who was holding a sign that said "Will play Left Tackle for food" on the corner of Denny and Aurora a few weeks ago squaring off against one of the best Defenses in the league and not allowing a sack. And the emergence of Justin Forsett doing what he used to do in the preseason against the aforementioned excellent D.
I assert that SF's Defense will make a lot of teams look crappy this year. And Curry tried to do too much, and think too much. Once he settles in, watch out. I expect it will take about 3 or 4 games as it did with Lofa his first year.
That said, these guys get paid a mint to deliver an excellent result and represent me and my city. If they slack or consistently screw up in a preventable manner, I have the right to let them know my opinion of their willfully subpar performance. Jerramy Stevens comes to mind here. Haven't seen much in the way of truly boo-worthy performances this year.
Ugly lapses, backups not ready to go, out-talented at some positions? Yes. But those are, for the most part, correctable. I expect this coaching staff will have the backups ready and the assignments will be more consistently correct this Sunday. Still drinkin' the Koolaid.
I assert that this team isn't as good as the Rams game showed and isn't as bad as the 9ers game showed. I agree with Bill that those who believe the sky is falling and Curry and Unger are busts after their 2nd games in the pros and that we will never win another game with Ruskell and Mora in charge are a bunch of idiots who give real fans a bad name. And those who can call out a subpar performance like last Sunday, deliver reasoned analysis of a situation and back it up with a few solutions, silly or smart, are real fans. Even if I don't like the conclusions they draw, If they can back up their conclusions with a halfbaked thought as to why they believe it, I can respect their wrong opinion. And argue the point in this forum. Without resorting to personal attacks when I can't back up my own convictions.
ALL news reporting is biased and it irks me greatly to read reporting that tries to manipulate my emotions and opinions while masquerading as unbiased and unemotional. If I wanted that, I'd go to FOX or the PI. They both play pander and slander and disguise it as unbiased Truth from the Mountaintop. Garbage. Give me BillT or the guy at Dave Kreig's Strike Beard any day. I never have to guess where their loyalties lie. That's a good thing. I think some forget this is a fan site. A lot of fan sites are blander and colder than yesterday's unsalted Cream of Wheat, or so full of vitriol that I can't stand to read them. Always look forward to a fan's perspective done as a feature article from BillT. The only time I skip over them is when my reading time is limited. That game was a couple of blown assignments and a few more practice reps from the backups away from a win. Don't panic yet, Chicken Little.

- First, all the build up and hype about how youll blast someone's skin off with your words, built up unnecessary hype and the article never lived up to the standard you set in your opening paragraphs. Better to let the reader think you blistered some crappy fans than say you will and don't.
- Second, the admission that you had to take out some of your content in the first article makes it look like you were just over-reacting and basicly doing the same thing as the people you were complaining about. Ironic.
- Three, This article sounds like a bunch of excuses. Please don't be Bill "The Whiner" T. You are better than that and don't lower yourself to hurt others.

Now where you're off base: fans have a perfect right to get POed and vent. I just spent sixty bucks for a ticket, never mind the concessions and so forth, to sit so far from the field that I couldn't even make out the jersey numbers on many of the players. People like me made this league, so they can take a few nasty blog comments and they'd better beg for more. And the heat excuse is laughable, there have been plenty of days in the mid 80s to low 90s in Renton since late July.
written by Bjorn Jonasson, September 22, 2009
All I'm saying is that this website is more than a blog by a bunch of fanatics. I've seen Chris quoted on ESPN's NFC West Coast Blog. ESPN is a the biggest sports entity on the planet. That means if your website is being talked about by the biggest sports company in the world, that puts all the staff on Seahawk Addicts to a higher standard of reporting and columns.
I've read many of your articles and this one of the worst that you've you written. It sounds petty, it's overblown, and all it does is make excuses for the team. This team doesn't need excuses, it needs its fans and media (you guys) to take them task when they screw up and especially when they quit on their fans like they did Sunday.
The real story is that they flat out got punched in the face and beat up. They lost I think at least six starters and then hawks failed to respond or fight back in any way. Now our favorite reporters and columnist (Seahawk Addicts) are not asking "why?" They are making excuses. I live in Los Angeles now and the running joke about North West sports fans and media is that we're to relaxed on our sports teams. We give the Seahawks a pass, we give the Mariners a pass, and we give the Huskies a pass (I'm a cougar, but let's face it, we're not even relevant right now). If this were the SEC, the Red Sox, or the Cowboys, we'd be fuming, and so would the media after Sunday's performance. Pete Carol is getting brutally killed in the media this week. USC lost one game. They'll probably win the rest of their games and still have a shot at the National Championship. But for the fans here, it's championship or bust. For the Seahawks the media and the fans need to start holding the team to that standard as well.
So when I read an article like this, it confirms everything about the media (like it or not, it now includes Seahawk Addicts) who are making excuses for the team instead of asking the hard questions that need to be put out there (in a respectable way). Instead this article takes to task fans who want those tough questions answered. So what's the point of you as a columnist then? I can get together with friends and do the "Ra Ra" shtick. I go to this website for real opinions and insight. Don't tell me your just a fan who happens to write article once in awhile. You're not anymore Bill. You shouldn't be defending yourself and getting in pissing matches on blog comments either. Show some integrity, show some level of professionalism, because that's how readers are trending on this site, that's what they expect of Chris, Mike, you, etc. That's the reality. That's why I think a lot of people have hated this article, because it makes Seahawk Addicts seem small and petty. This website is bigger than that, especially when it's talked about on ESPN.
Sincerely,
Bjorn Jonasson (Asking the tough questions of Bill T! It's all good though Bill!)

Actually, I've had several of my articles picked up by Sando over on the NFC West blog also. Also, I've had an article picked up on the front page of Bloguin. You can verify all of that with Chris if you think I'm shinin' you on.
I could really care less about all that stuff anyway. I do what I do and if that annoys you, that's the way it goes. I do factual stuff, I do speculative stuff, and sometimes I do call outs like this one. It all gets read and it all creates readers. I get bored with just reading other peoples stuff and stats and game logs and then re-writing it for you guys with links to the original material. I prefer to write original material and therefore leave all the dry facts to others and try to write mostly original pieces from my perspective. Since I've got readers, some people must enjoy reading them. I do have some qualifications, I played high school football for 4 years, coached Pop Warner football for 4 more years, and have been a Season Ticket Holder for 34 years with the Seahawks now.
I did a real piece on the 12th man recently where I gave the history of the 12th man and dug up all kinds of stuff about how that all came about (lots of it was also from my personal experience over the last 35 years). That was a serious piece with all facts and no opinion and I was proud of it but it drew less than half the readers this one did. Go figure. You want great writing fine. You want readers and lots of comments, this gets twice the readers and 4 times the comments. This one hit a nerve with a lot of readers sometimes painfully it seems.
This article has the most hits on the site today by quite a bit. When that count goes to zero or close to it, I guess it's time to get my life back and hang up the pen and quit spending so much time on the blog writing because no one's reading. My wife would give you guys a medal if you could get enough readers to quit reading my stuff so I'd stop writing because of all the time it consumes each week that she'd like back. It's not happening at this point though.
If you want to write the boss, go ahead and write Chris and plead with him to fire me. I've said all along, I'd be fine with bowing out and going back to just being a reader and letting someone else run the Bold Prediction contest, write several artices every week and keep the pressure off Chris to do it all himself (which will burn him out just like it did Steffes) but that's not the message I get from the readers, Chris, and the hit count on my articles. Steffes quit partly because he hated getting his chops busted by readers. I don't care and I fight back.
I'm a fan just like the rest of you guys and I'm up for a good discussion or argument anytime so why should I remain aloof and not get my hands dirty along with you guys in the comments section? If I had a choice, I rather just be a fan rather than just writing articles and not be able to enter into discussion about those articles when the discussion starts. I can do both though so I will. If that makes me a non-professional so be it.
I'm a professional musician and B3 player by profession and a damn good one. That's where I get my professional jollies playing soul and funk not writing for the blog. I get paid well for playing music and I'm a consumate professional at it.
This blog is a hobby for me. I get paid nothing. If you can arrange a salary for me, then you can set my agenda and say what you want me to write about and what the content should be and I'll be glad to follow it because that's what you're paying for. Right now, you're getting what you pay for. I get paid nothing and I have no restrictions on what I write as long as I keep it clean and don't point fingers at anyone specific. I also have a pretty good command of the English language and always spell check my stuff thoroughly although sometimes something slips by. I'm not aware of anyone else claiming that I'm an embarassment especially the management. Once again if you can get them to listen to that argument, got for it.
If you want to try it, I can arrange an interview and a review of your articles. We would love to get some more writers here that would write on a regular basis but you have to apply and be interviewed and have your writing reviewed and accepted. Mine was.

Anyway, I can respect the passion and enthusiasm, but its pretty silly to question people's fanhood if they dont like what their favorite team does and they get pissed about it. Just get off your high horse and focus on the hawks love-fest. You cross the line when you start calling out fans who think differently than you and it just comes off as pathetic. People get pissed. Get over it.
I dont watch Sean Hannity on Fox News because I dont agree with him and it is a waste of my time. I view your posts the same way.

Are you so full of yourself that you feel the need to preface your opinion with two paragraphs of disclaimers?! You have the time in your life to sit down and write out a 4,000 word statement of the obvious about a football game... Congratulations! Yes I am jealous of your copious amount of free time but by no means do WE view you as ANY sort of expert. Thanks for your opinion. I agree with it. However there is no need to waste two paragraphs of my life reading your bullshit and high than thou ("Some of you exercised your cursing skills and used foul language liberally to display all the frustrations the game brought out in you. That's OK.") attitude talking down to us. HEY we don't need your permission to say 'fuck' on a blogging site about our favorite NFL team. I have read the blog since Steffes started it about three years ago and it has gone downhill ever since then. Steffes was and still is the man... but do you ever wonder why he is no longer a part of this blog? Because of stupid assholes like you who think people actually care about your opinion. We come here for actual news about our beloved hawks, not to read somebody talking down to us. So please take a minute and realize that we don't care what YOU think. We care about what the Seahawks do.
P.S. Your not spanish.

Still, he's just down on those bailing from the ship, not those frustrated about the game. It's good to want them to be better, it's good to be frustrated and expect more. It's good to vent when you are angry. It's also good to be a true fan and not sell out the whole season because of one ugly loss. That's pretty much the deal. His post was specifically aimed at those folks, not those venting in general.
Reading comprehension helps, folks.

There is no audience for the former here. Nobody is going to participate on an ongoing basis on a hardcore fan blog if they have truly given up on their team. Sometimes a believer will mutter, "there is no God," even though he really thinks there is. Sometimes an atheist will look skyward and implore, "why me," even though he really thinks nobody's listening. Sometimes a fan will declaim, "I give up," even though he really hasn't (hell, I wish I had a dollar for every time I've done this). These are expressions of emotion, not literal statements of fact. We usually calm down a few hours to a few days after saying these things. So really, Bill is talking to nobody when he talks to "disloyal fans," and is rubbing salt in open wounds when he talks about "real fans."

I come here for the football. And the opinions and analysis that haven't been sanitized, dumbed down and rendered so bland for my protection that it will make me puke. And stop choking on all your respective halos.
Submit some material of your own good enough to get it published and let all the rest of us see if you're all that enough to criticize someone else's work. And we'll get to see how well you can handle the inevitable shots taken at you by those who haven't bothered to attempt what you have done.
The thrust of the article to me was that fairweather fans suck. As do Chicken Little fans. It was a few blown assignments from a tough road win. By people good enough and smart enough with coaches good enough and smart enough to not let the same type of miscues happen again. Again, not happy with the result, but a good show nonetheless from a team 2 games removed from 4-12. If we see the same crap repeated over the next 6 games without any correction, THEN the sky has fallen and everyone should be fired.
Patience, brethren and sistren, it's only game 2. Not enough data to determine if it's a trend.

The Team just had a bad game, some players got hurt, some did not play as good as expected (some however did)... That is Football...
Let's wait before jumping to any conclusion about draft, play calling, team building...
As fans, we have to support our team, even more in difficult situations.
The players must stand up and continue to fight, run, catch, tackle... and fans should help them in whatever way they can...

- Hello from France -
