Marcus Trufant has practiced two days in a row with no apparent ill effects. That is very good news. There is no doubt that having Trufant on the field will improve this defense, but the ripple effect his presence adds could be somewhat dramatic.

First and foremost, he is the most talented member of our secondary by a long stretch. So, y'know, that's really good.

Secondly though, with Trufant taking his spot back, there is more competition out there (and less Kelly Jennings). It remains to be seen whether Josh Wilson has done enough to wrest the second starting spot away from Ken Lucas, but in reality all three CBs will get a lot of time out there. I expect the Hawks to play their corners a bit like they are their DTs -- if you're going against big, power receivers like Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson, you start Lucas; if you're going against speedsters, you start Wilson.

Josh Wilson has the skills to be one of the best nickelbacks in the league, regardless of whether he starts in 2 CB situations or not. He will almost always (and should) slide in and present a blitz risk that must be accounted for. I have still not seen a Wilson blitz where he does not significantly alter the course of the play. Putting him in at nickel will give him many more chances to do that. Beyond that, with Trufant, Lucas and Wilson all healthy, the Seahawks have another decent cornerback who can play Dime. I think we've thrown maybe four dime packages out so far this year, because, really, who was going to go out there?

Finally, with Trufant back there, we have a much better secondary and are able to take more blitz risks that we had been promised early on. Yes, the front four is still the key to our pressure packages, but imagine sending Curry off the edge with Hill blitzing down the middle and Mebane collapsing the middle of the pocket. Maybe no sack the first time, but that errant throw that Trufant or Wilson grabs will make all the difference in a close game.

Am I being too optimistic? Sure, maybe I am, but after hearing Hasselbeck the last few days I just don't believe that the season is over yet. If we win the next three games -- all of which are very winnable games -- we are 5-4 and ready to make a charge for the postseason. Bear in mind, the Seahawks play four last-place opponents with a combined record of 1-23. So far, we've lost four games to teams with a combined record of 14-6. Still, we've only beaten poor teams thus far, so it's a long road ahead, but that doesn't mean the playoffs aren't attainable.

Trufant is the man.Now we just need someone behind are corners.Next year we have a chance to draft two of the best safeties in college.Could you imagine Mays and Berry on the same team.I can!Throw in a little Cury and Mebane.Maybe pick up a DE in free agency next year and use all the other pics on offense. We should draft a Qb after Hasselbecks done.Which should go as long as Hasselbeck wants it to.He has done more for this team than Largent. He is a legend we should treat him the same way as Griffey.

It will take more than Trufant back to salvage this season. Its possible to end it respectfully if we can get most, if not all of them back.
Good Write up.

I'm picking up on the optimism coming out of the VMAC too. It sounds like they had a really solid two days of practice, and it sounds like getting Tru back psyched the entire team up. I read on seahawks.com that on his first day back at practice, Darryl Tapp followed him from the locker room out to the field, making trumpet noises and saying, "Tru is back, spread the word!" I love that stuff. I think after the Cards game, we needed some serious bright spots to bring the fight back to this team. Not only does Trufant monumentally affect our secondary strength, and therefore our ability to get crazier with our blitzes and set up more coverage-based sacks, which in turn helps the D get opposing offenses off the field, which in turn gets our offense out there and in a rhythm (as if you know, that isn't a big enough impact), but he seems to be acting as a huge inspiration to the team. Love to see that, love to see that.
True & Leroy

True and Hill coming back will make up for the loss of Lofa. Hawthorne is an active MLB, so the drop off there may not be very steep. Maybe the defense will actually show some kahunas (figuratively, that is) on the road.

If the O-Line gets healthy, who knows how much kahuna the Hawks may have.
Sarcasm?

I feel like I'm picking up some sarcasm in this article but can't really tell for sure. Anyone?

Wilson on the blitz is absolutely devastating, so I didn't see any sarcasm. Nice point about the combined records of our opposition. Not as much shame in losing to good teams, except the way we've lost....can't think of any losses I feel good about.

I'm with you, Louie, Tru and Leroy back means more than Lofa out.

If Trufant can make significant contributions in Dallas, and McIntosh can be solid on the line, I like the Hawks chances. A healthy QB (for once), a decent line, motivated receivers, a lot to look forward to. I just hope they don't get screwed by some fluke play or questionable call by the refs.

I vote for Green Jerseys in Dallas.

LouieLouie-

I think you mean "cojones," not "Kahuna." A Kahuna is a Hawaiian term for a sorcerer, healer, or master craftsman.

Hmm, now that I think about it, never mind. I'd like to see the defense show some Kahunas, too.

Thanks for the technical / anatomical correction. Whatever anyone may call them, I hope the Hawks have some. I hope they kick some bumm.

Back in preseason, I said that Tru was the MVP of our team, more important than even Hasselbeck. I believe that more than ever.

While the offense will continue to be unable to do anything unless, and until, the O-line improves dramatically, the defense will immediately improve with Tru back there. The ripple effect of having him back there will be huge--Babs wont need to concentrate as much on that side, the backers will be able to take more risks, and the D-line will be able to T-off on the qb more. It could be a huge transformation.

Now if only Walt and Sims and Lock will return ASAP, we might actually have a competitive team.

So what I can gather and believe whole heartedly is that we do have a talented team. We just need to get them onto the field.

Tru's retrn is very important. My hope for this season is to see as many of the "planned" starters play together for a reasonable period of time so that we can truly understand what kind of performance this team can put out.

Go Hawks!!!! 09 is not lost.

Hawksmack,
Having Tru, Wilson, Mays and Berry as our DB's would make our D truly something to fear. The only fly in the ointment is that, even if we were to get Jahri Evans in FA, our O line would still not be all that good...of course, this would mean that we'd get a good 1st round pick in 2011, and we could use THAT one on a stud LT, and our early 2nd round pick on a good RB,or, (this just came to me) we could get Jake Locker, and a decent LT with our second...So, if you want to say goodbye to the Hass era, and do a two year "mini-rebuild", that MAY be the way to go...
