Rotoworld and Danny O'Neil are reporting that Big Walt has been shipped off to the Injured Reserve list, ending his season and likely his career. More on this if anything develops, here's Mora via Danny O'Neil:

"After much deliberation and evaluation and soul searching between the team, the medical staff and Walter Jones," coach Jim Mora said. "It has been determined that the best thing to do for Walter, for this football team and for his future is to put him on injured reserve. So we're going to do that today. We're going to shut him down. We're going to let him heal up, have whatever procedures our medical staff feels is necessary and then re-evaluate early next year.

Lofa Tatupu's 2009 status will be known by tonight, according to Mora. He's being looked at by famed Dr. James Andrews as we speak.

He's not retired yet! Here's hoping we draft our Tackle in 2010 draft...and maybe Walt can find enough tread on his cleats for one last season.

I hope that Jones does what is best for him. He has given Seattle a lot over the years, he deserves to do what he wants/needs, not what the fans want. I would hate to see him end up like Earl Campbell, unable to walk when he gets older.

the King is dead - long live the King!

Wait - we'll have to find a new King first. McIntosh? Locklear? FA? 2010 draft pick? Big shoes to step into, and next to impossible to fill. Thanks for the memories Big Walt.
Too bad

It's just a matter of time now that his retirement is announced. My guess is that it will happen during this off-season.
He was a great one, but such is life in the NFL. Boy, do we need a good, reliable left tackle.

"THE" absolute best left tackle in FOREVER. Soon to be replaced forever, yes; but not likely to be duplicated anytime soon, by ANY team.

This man played all these years through pains other players had to mask with meds and medical assistance. He did so, because he could not (medically) use many products. That HE DID play so, speaks to his mighty tolerance level and signifies why he was the most feared left-tackle in the NFL for nearly 10 years. You just DO NOT see this level of player, game after game after game... anymore.

And now.... I cry.

Thanks Big Walt! Wish that SB XL would've been reff'ed fairly (still stings) so you would have a SB win under your belt, you so deserve it for the many great years. Best Tackle Ever!

as i detailed in an earlier comment, walt hasn't retired yet. everyone seems to be writing him off forever, but the decision to place him on IR only ends his season.

check out this link for some good news:

jones wants to come back next year, and isn't planning to retire. i hope he does heal up and start next year. so stop wishing him farewell already. how can you call yourselves seahawk fans if you're all too anxious to jettison one of the best seahawks of all time?

my bad. the "earlier comment" i referred to was on sando's blog. here's what i said this morning:

"wow. it's a sad day, if this is indeed goodbye for walt. he is a great player with an amazingly humble disposition. i really hope he can heal up and return next year.

but at least there's some decision now. having it up in the air for such an extended period can be a distraction for some teams. now the seahawks can move forward and make the roster moves they need to. keeping a spot open indefinitely made no sense."

ok. that's all i got. discuss..
Not Written Off - Just High Praise

Kelphelper - We are not writing him off - just pondering what was, appreciating how fine it was, and knowing what will not likely be seen again for many a year to come.

I am all for Big Walt to play forever, if he wants, and is able to take the field. Hell, half a Walt is still better than damn near anything out there. I can live with half a Walt.

Reality is this is a significant type injury. It has not responded well to surgery. Tubbs had a similar (not same, but similar) surgery and we waited three years for him.

Let's be real... if it was anyone but Walter Jones, do you think we would have waited so long to IR him? We were hoping for hope, but alas - we still have games to play. You cannot stop fighting the war because one of the mightiest can no longer contribute. We suck it up; sadly – look to bolter our troops with fresh resources, but still we must fight the fight.

Hahahaaaaaa. I flippin knew it. Well, many of us did. This is actually a relief. We can focus on reality instead of just crossing our fingers.

Thank you for all the great games Walt!

Regardless if he is coming back or not, we should draft LT with our highest pick next draft. Even if Walt comes back the guy could play or sit back and learn from the best in the business. Oklahoma LT looks like a stud..... geeez I cant even beleive I'm talking about the draft 8 weeks in.

Big Walt

It would be stupid to risk re-injuring that knee. The IR is a good move. Take a look next year. If he can play, than we can all give a hardy "YES!"

If Lock has shown that he's the guy (a big IF!), then what a great back up lineman Walt would be.

If he can't play anymore, we'll see him on the Hall of Fame stand receiving his due the first year he is eligible.

Thanks Walt, next stop HOF.

Walter is the toughest guys in the league, so this must be really bad. He has never been able to take the usual medicines or pain killers due to complications with his kidneys.

i don't know why it took sooooo long. microfracture surgeries end careers ie marcus tubbs and walt was no youngster either, but the best. we went from the best left side in the league in a long time with walt and hutch to...i can't even name them from week to week!!
