Olindo Mare was thrown under the bus earlier in the year, as we all recall. The gut reaction was "oh snap, he's getting cut!" But then, thankfully, he didn't. Why am I thankful for that?

Olindo Mare currently leads the league in Touchback percentage (42.3%). Mare also leads the league in kicks inside the endzone with 75%. Our opponents have an average starting position (resulting from a kickoff) of the 23-yard line, good for sixth in the league. Now, mind you, that's sixth in the league, but considering how awful our coverage teams have been, that's pretty impressive. One of the best kick returns was Johnny Knox's where he took the ball from 9 yards deep in the endzone, for example. That's just bad coverage.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass those stats along, as they made my heart fill with warmth for the goofy looking, strangely named kicker who is still recovering from being thrown under the bus so dramatically.

Totally Agree

I totally agree and was glad that the Hawks didn't cut Mare in what would have been a totally knee-jerk reaction. Remember how even the great Josh Brown used to struggle to get it past the five yard line?

albertaHawk I think it may have been just you. Perhaps there is some anti-Canadian bias filter built into Bloguin. smilies/smiley.gif

Chris, I don't think it was so much of throwing him under the bus, as it was to send a statement that missing field goals he should make is unacceptable. It was early in the season and he did not want that to be a trend. JMO

I said this when everyone was roasting him. We kept him over Couto because of his kickoffs and not because of his field goal kicking. He is worth his weight in gold for his strong leg. I wouldn't trade him for someone that is dead on on field goals but can't get it past the 15 yard line.

As far as the site...I've been having trouble surfing away from the site. I actually have to close the tab down and open a new one to get to another site. When I shut the tab down, it tells me it's still busy. This happens on three different computers...and I'm in California.

AlbertaHawk--I been having trouble at home and at work accessing this site. Go into Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, and make sure SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, and TLS 1.0 are all checked, and see if that works.

That and some other box I randomly checked (I think the one that dumps your temp files auto) seemed to do the trick.

Mora never had any intentions of getting rid of Mare but since he "threw him under the bus" Mare has been perfect. Looks like Mora's "pep talk" worked. smilies/smiley.gif

When I was down in Seattle, most of the people I talked to said that Mora had every right to call him out and that it's time to stop mothering these millionaires. Maybe more players need to hear their name called out in post game pressers to light the fire when they don't perform.

I dont think Mora had a plan when he called out Mare.I think it was his experience and he let his mouth speak before his head OKed it kind of like he has done in the past. You can give him credit for a great pep talk if you like but I am not buying it.

I never had a problem with Mora's comments re: Mare...If you screw the pooch that badly, you deserve tooth marks on your touchis...The thing Mora did that was smart was, he said it, apologized and then let it go...Mare got the message...
