Frantic notes from Mora's Presser  E-mail

Sights are set on getting better from this point on, rather than looking back -- but there is still plenty to work on and things to learn on.

Good news: guys will start coming back. Rob Sims could miss a couple of games, Kerney has a groin strain and is "doubtful" for this week. Matt Hasselbeck will attempt to practice on Wednesday, no promise that he'll play though. Josh Wilson will be back at close to full strength. Guys like Lofa and Frye will be getting healthier and should be close to full speed.

"Very disappointed with where we are after a quarter, but there's a lot left to play."

Matt -- matter of being able to move and take deep breaths, and that is just a matter of wait and see. Hopefully on Wednesday he can get out there and do some things and hopefully be ready by Sunday.

Question: the team has lost 11 of 13 on the road. Is there anything you see that gives you an idea of what happens and why it is going that way? "That is the million dollar question. I actually talked to guys from other places about that, of course I reflected back on my time in SF when we were one of the best road teams in the league. So I'm kind of pouring through my memory bank to see if there's something we did differently, and I haven't come up with anything yet, other than that its something you take on the road with you. Mental toughness."

Sense of urgency? Yes. Major sense of urgency, huge sense of urgency. I concur, we need to get to the bye at 3-3, rest up, hit it hard and play. It's killing Matt not to play, it's killing Walt not to play, and Tru and Hill, and all these guys, it's killing all of them to sit on the sidelines and not play.

Moping Clowns on the Sidelines? I felt like, on the field and after the tape, that we continued to fight. I can tell you this, this is  team that will stand up, bow our neck, and fight. It might not look like that, because when you look at the score and sometimes it was a little bit easy for Payton, but I can tell you that this is a team that doesn't have any quit in'em.

How is it that two coaches now have had no answer for road games? My answer? Be a better team. Road games are hard, and when we have a mediocre team, they usually end up in losses. Still, it's Mora's JOB to have some ideas in that realm!

And it wasn't the score that made us think the Hawks quit on Sunday, it was their demeanor, their faces, and their seemingly total lack of energy.
3-4 Defense PLEASE
written by BhamHawksFan, October 05, 2009
We really need to look into switching to a 3-4 next year. I know its too late now but this is something that needs to happen. Bronco's switched, all the experts said they would not do well and didnt have the right people...one of the best Ds in the league right now. Greenbay switched, same old dont have the right people nonsense, great D this year. 49s same old story. I have lots of faith the Tapp could be a mean rushing LB and a line rotation of mebane, cole, redding, Bryant, Jackson would do well....basically our D is weak right now and it has no reason to be.
continuity is the problem
written by Papahawk, October 05, 2009
Offensive and defensive. I think the d-line aint the problem. What is? I don't know. We just don't have enough guys making plays. They make more plays at home than on the road, the opposition makes more plays at their home than on the road. This is nothing new.

Congrats to the following players who made plays during the game- for the Seahawks:

Deon Grant- that play in the end zone to defend Dallash Clark was a good one.

Ken Lucas- The defense on the outside, and the interception were very good. Inspiring.

Jon Ryan- The guy continues to blast punts and even made a tackle.

Ben Obomanu- When he touches the ball good things happen. On returns, and when he covers kicks.

Seneca could have been on this list. But he forgot where the line of scrimmage was.

Word to Seahawks- I watch the games to see plays get made. To high-five my friends and to cheer. When I watch your road games, very little of that happens. I will no longer be watching those games live on TV, as they aren't worth my time. If you want me back watching these games- take it to an opponent on the road. Sometimes you are the windshield, some times you are the bug. When the Hawks are on the road its "all bug, all the time".

Bugs are small and die. Like the Hawks injury bug. We are getting hurt because the other team is the aggressor. Be the aggressor and the other player gets hurt. That's that problem.

Patrick Kerney. Tapp will outplay you. Have fun on the sideline watching your teammates outplay you. Its okay though Patrick, you got paid. We appreciate your efforts in the 2007 season. You were truly special that year.

Its not rocket science. There are good teams, and bad teams. We lose on the road, because we are a bad team, limited even further with pretty bad play calls.
piling on
written by Papahawk, October 05, 2009
Wow, words on the Hawks is darned negative right now. This is the time when leaders rise. Let's hope whoever rises is a better leader than what we've seen.

People are hating hard core on Mora, Knapp, and Ruskell.

I will not pile on, because it does little good. However, I have resigned myself to the fact that this is not anything close to the Hawks team of two years ago, and that team was highly flawed.

Looking to the future- the team needs more talent.

I to dont really want to pile on but Im watching the Green bay game and they are running behind Hutch every play. What would we look like with him on our team.Dont tell me he wanted to leave ,Ruskell had all year to show him a little respect.

Quit whinning about Hutch, that crap was eons ago.

I personally would like to see some shuffling along the defensive line. Move Kerney back to the left where he was a terror in 07 and have Tapp start on the right. Move Mebane back to the run stuffer role and put Redding in at the 3 tech since hes more suited to that than defensive end anyway.

If Kerney keeps failing to live up to his potential, put Jackson in. Thats why we drafted Jackson, hes Kerney's replacment so we shouldn't hesitate to pull the plug on Kerney especially with Tapp and Jackson playing so well in comparison.

Vikes look great don't they? Wow, just dominating performance..why can't we build a team like that? Taking apart a pretty good GB team.

WAKE UP PAUL ALLEN! Get off your duff and fix our team!

Watching this GB/MN game, a couple of thoughts. They mentioned Holmgren had Farve thrown tons of balls. He was and is a great QB coach. I think Seneca was better last year because Holmbren was coaching him. Mora's no QB coach--and I'm not saying Holmy would be doing any better at this point, but I don't think Seneca would have the mopey face on the sidelines. Mora talks about fight and I've seen absolutely zero of that this season.

I'm already tired of the sally sunshine routine when we've been really terrible this season for the most part.

@Hawkgirl,

That's one of the most disappointing thing I saw yesterday too, the team came out pretty much flat as it can be without any fight.

There was zero sense of urgency and they seemed to pretty much accept that they were going to lose..perhaps they were so outmatched that it looked that way but the coaching staff was also mailed it in. Proof : Not running 2 minute drill after recovering that on-side kick..wtf..what is the point of on-side kicking if your just going to run regular offense?. If your gonna lose, atleast go down fighting...this team has no fight, which is disappointing coming off a 4 win season.

We just SUCK, pure and simple. Offense SUCK. Defense SUCK. Our GM SUCK big time. And, our coaching staff SUCK. I am so sick of this team, 30 years I have been rooting for this team. Hoping they will win a superbowl before I die.

Winning on the road is simple. Build a good team. Look at our 05 team. We lost a total of 3 games - all on the road, but we also won 5 on the road. So, all this talk about west coast time slots, and body clocks, etc - its all crap. These guys make tonnes of money. They MUST perform. Just stope looking for excuses or rationale. It comes down to fundamental, sound football.

Dude, Mora looks tired. That is not a good sign. He seems to have lost the spunk in his eyes. If I can see it at the press conf, then the players must know it.

We need a win this weekend in a bad way.

How long are we going to keep hearing "but we've got a lot of football left"? The game this week against the Jaguars is a MUST win and you might as well call next week one as well. Good news is they're both at home and winnable. Bad news is we're still banged up, running out of time, and we're playing like crap on both sides of the ball.
I know the cart is way in front of the horse here but.......
written by MonroeCoug, October 05, 2009
all signs are pointing to less than 6 wins this year. With all of the coaching talent available next year, could Mora be one and done? I believe Ruskell would be out but in my mind he and Mora could be a package deal (The Atlanta mafia).
So Negative
written by hawkfan, October 05, 2009
I am so tired of everyone bashing the Hawks all the time after every loss. It is sickening! come on guys, the seahawks are a good football team! yes, thats right, they are a good football team. They just need to get healthy.
I understand the loss this weekend was bad, but lets face it, going into the season this was a game on the calendar that most were chalking up as a loss anyway. No take out Hasselbeck, Jones, Locklear, Trufant, Wilson, and Hill and of course this game was going to be ugly. Did you actually think we would be in it without two of our corners and a linebacker going against Manning? I sure didn't!
the fact of the matter is that teams are lucky to win against the colts at full strength year in and year out the past decade or so.
We will be alright down the stretch if we can pull out wins in the next two games. Take a look at the schedule again and think of what you were thinking about preseason. I honestly thought that we would go into the bye week being 4-2 with a healthy squad. with how banged up we have been, going 3-3 is not bad. .500 ball into the bye getting majority of our team back (hopefully). We will be good down the stretch. We are a darn good football team. I watched a majority of their camps and saw how the offense and defense can play. They are good when healthy! trust me.
Gregg Knapp called a decent game last week too. The problem is he has Seneca back there instead of Hasselbeck. There is a reason why we have not been able to score the past couple of weeks, and it is because Seneca is not a good QB by any means. He was consistently over throwing his receivers, throwing uncatchable balls in stride, or just plain running out of bounds outside the pocket instead of just throwing it away. We were able to get in scoring position, but not able to finish most of the time. That is the difference between Hass and Seneca. Hass will finish those drive most of the time. Thats the difference between A good QB and a backup. One will finish drives and the other can move the ball here and there down the field, but end up stalling.
Think about it, what team in the league could be missing their starting QB, 2 of 3 CB, starting LB, and down to their third string LT and even compete with teams? NOBODY. Aside from the Colts, we were competing and in the prior two games until the end. So don't worry, as log as we can go 3-3 into the bye, we will be alright. 9-7 can still win this division with how inept the 49ers offense is.

"Mental toughness", all is said, and that's all I want to see somehow or other.
Mora, just wake-up and shake them all !
If we deserve to loose, we loose, I don't mind. But SHOW some energy, act as A TEAM, prove us there is no FATE, give us some HOPE !!!

Hawkfan--youre nuts! Whats sickening is the horrible performance of every facet of this team that is loaded with talent. I have never seen a coaching regime come in and do so little with so much talent to start with--injuries bedamned!

Whats sickening is watching our coaches fail to adequately prepare the team to perform thier pathetically inadequate schemes precisely.

Mike Singletary's team has shown that you can be pretty good despite running a Junior College offense and simple, smash-mouth defense--even with mediocre talent across the board--as long as your players execute the scheme precisely.

In Seattle, we have poor scheme's on offense and defense--but even worse, the players are not executing well and are not playing disciplined. The sloppiness and lack of discipline is the fault of the Head Coach. The schematic issues are Knapp's and Bradley's fault.

Can we be a better team? With the talent we have, we allready should be, never mind injuries. Our backups are good players, and some are great. Who else has backup linebackers like ours? ANY NFL team would kill for them. True, our backup secondary sucks, and Babs is struggling mightily at safety. The offensive line is horrible, and every one of these players is a Ruskell pick.

So again, will we get better? In my opinion, that all depends on our coaching staff, from top to bottom. They need to stop handicapping our offense and call plays to win the game, leaving it up to the players to execute properly and make the play a success. Dumbing down the offense in fear will only lead to a sure loss. Mora needs to find a way to adeqautely prepare the team to play with precision--whatever he's doing on practice days needs improvement.

IF, and thats a big IF, the coaches can start performing at an NFL level, and we get a few players to stay healthy, we can get better. I have no idea if it will be enough, but hey--why cant we be this years Cardinals?

You guys talk about waiting for the starters to get healthy, but i don´t even see our current starters staying healthy, it seem every game we loose a valuable starter. I am not optimistic for this season 4-12 is again a reality

I would love for Seahawks addicts to do a position by position comparison for this years team to the 2005 team that won* the superbowl. Because I don't know, are we really that bad or have we just been extremely unlucky with all the injuries we've had to key players over the last two years? How much of this is on Ruskell? I don't know.

I would like to see more of Bradley before passing harsh judgment, no matter how unremarkable he has been so far. Monte Kiffen spoke very highly of Bradley and thats good enough for me to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Now Knapp is another story, was not a big fan of the Knapp signing. The only plus was his ability to seem to get a run game going, but so far he has been mediorce in that regard. I also hoped he would be able to call plays like he did in Atlanta with Wallace at the helm, so far he has not.

Don't know if Gruden or maybe Kubiack (most likely gone from Houston after this year) would be interested in an OC posistion but Allen should definitly throw some $$$ at one of these two. Hopefully Kubiack since he uses the ZBS and West Coast offense. I see Gruden getting a new HC job soon (Buffalo) so he is nothing more than wishful thinking.

chikn littl
written by luvchikn, October 06, 2009
I have to agree with Hawkfan. 100%. I will now pause to let the better informed and more passionate Hawk fans rail against my stupidity.

There now.

I never expected to win in Indy. I expected to be 4-2 going into the bye. Given all the injuries, I will gladly go into the bye 3-3. That means we have to win at home. Which I ALWAYS believe we can do.

Watching MNF I was struck by the fact the Hutch is who is missing. As much as I admire TR, he sure stepped on the crank on that one. Can't live in the past.

Seneca is not the answer. Let him run the scout team and move up Teal.

Go Hawks.
Come on !!!!
written by mang'hawks.fr, October 06, 2009
I don't give a damn sh*t about losing in Indy with a full back-up QB, OL and CB corps, and so on. Whatever ! That's just the way we lose !!!
Wake up dudes, if we don't show up another state of mind, we'll deserve to loose any games.
Above injuries, there was someting wrong very deeply. And who is supposed to boost our mental abilities, who is supposed to give faith to this team ????
All we need is a good shrink, and Mora too, visibly.
Come on, don't be blind, it's no use trying to hide from the facts ! We were good enough with injuries against the Bears, but how about that one, we just gave up anything last sunday. I hope it was just an accident, but something is telling me it's not.

luvchkn--Nobody is calling you stupid. Nor Hawkfan--I just think he's gone mentalsmilies/wink.gif

I never expected to win either, but I thought maybe 27-17 or 31-24. Instead, our team layed a big fat egg out there all day long.

Jake A---You know one HUGE difference between the 2005 team and this one?! The COACHES!

Also, Holmgren was in full control (Ruskell had yet to assert his will and take over) and had total faith in his offense--the only year you could say that. It took years to build that offense. It didnt take half as long to destroy.

Omarlittle--I am passing judgement--thus far, Bradley has flat out sucked. Not to say he wont get it together, but he's rapidly running out of time. God, I thought we were home free once Marshall's rear end was history!
for those awed over the o-line at Minny...
written by BlueThru&Thru, October 06, 2009
they were very good protecting farve, but actually sucked in run blocking last night. The Minny rb's, including peterson, were most often stuffed at or behind the line of scrimmage, and they averaged about 2 yards per carry. They could not open holes, and were not good in the second level with sustaining blocks, including Hutch.

However, Farve was hot, and GB's defensive scheme against the pass sucked, as they got no pressure, and really didn't try to get much by mixing things up. Kampman, their best pass rusher, is playing this year with his hand up, and mostly playing positional and not supposed to attack the line of scrimmage, and often even dropped into zone coverage. He looks lost out there. So while it was a high powered game, there was lots of crapitude from coaches and players on both teams. But having good QB's really shows how you can overcome that, with both Farve and Rogers looking great, even though other parts of their O and D weren't playing well.

Just shows how much we miss a healthy and strong Hasselbeck, a guy who may or may not be gone for good. Maybe he gets his health back and returns to 2004-2007 type form, maybe not. If he does, we will look a lot better, if not, we will definitely need to find a real qb for next year. Senaca's not it, and Teel's an unknown and untested as yet.
