Why does this get on my nerves?
written by Papahawk, November 03, 2009
All this tinkering with spots on the roster that don't make a much a difference on the field. Hopefully we don't have to rely on these guys... but let's at least give them a chance to make a difference! How many of these "new Seahawks" will actually be given the opportunity to make some plays?

A lot of little moves that probably won't make much difference. Maybe they are to send a message, I don't know. I am happy that Jamar Adams is back. I wanted him to make the original 53.
Hey Guys
written by LouieLouie, November 03, 2009
This is a move to boost the special teams. Don't expect these guys to get into the games very much, other than in the kicking game. It looks like the guys who weren't playing hard on special teams got canned and/or they're bringing in some youth.

I thought that Adams and Mike Hass looked pretty solid during the preseason.

Glad to see Adams making the team. Hes been pretty impressive to me since his college days and I was glad to see us scoop him up as an UDFA. I had thought he was a third to fifth round pick but he fell for some reason, I think he has a real shot at being a solid starter in the league.

Whats that old Roman practice where they would execute every 10th soldier in a unit that failed on the battlefield?

A brutal tactic but you cannot deny its effect on future production. Hopefully the rest of the team (looking at you OL, Kerney, Jennings, Babs, and even Grant) gets the message.

Scare Tactics??

Scare tactics? I doubt it. If you really want to scare someone and get their attention, you make a reall a sacrifice, not a shuffle. We'll wait and see if a shoe really drops.

Wow, What a Roster Our GM Put Together
written by kidder95, November 03, 2009
Paul Allen just spent 2M to give Edge a chance to make the top 10 in yards.

Anyone who does not hold management accountable for letting this RB situation, secondary situation, and O-Line situation become an albatross, while spending a ton of money is clueless.

To note: We spent 4M dollars on RB in 2009 that are no longer on the team.

Yeah, Holmgren the GM sucks. What label to you give Ruskell?

Wake up people.

Please, Mays and Tebow are the two names I least want to hear called by us on draft day.

Tebow is your typical spread offense QB who will bust a la Alex Smith, Vince Young, Joey Harrington ect ect.

Mays is just a newer version of Ken Hamlin. Hes a great athlete and a BIG hitter, but has zero coverage skills. Watch him, he ALWAYS goes for the knockout insted of the ball.

If Berry, Clausen, Okung or Bruce Campbell (keep your eye on this kid) are there with our top pick I think we will give some serious attention to these guys. IMO these guys are all potential top 5 picks, they have the talent to do so but the question is will a team spend a top 5 pick on a safety? Get CJ Spiller or Jon Dwyer with our later first rounder and a guard or center with our second and this offense has a nice reload to give Matt one more shot...

great post kidder95, I TOTALLY agree! We could have kept weaver.cj wallace was a good special teamer, wish we couldve kept him.I have no idea if ruskell tried to do any worthy trades before the deadline, it wouldve made more sense to try and trade people as opposed to just releasing them for no gain.
I recall several interviews with ruskell, that he would rather build a team through free agency with proven veterans rather than the draft. Its not working. I hope we get rid of ruskell, and the seahawk fans quit getting the shaft

More Proof

that management and coaching staff have no plan. It appears they are just throwing stuff against the wall. Where is the direction with this team? Just in the 2009 season
1) spent $4M on RB's that are not on the roster
2) cut your starting safety a week before the season and sign a guy who didn't have a training camp
3) In the first few days of FA you give big money to a DT who was a back-up on one of the worst rushing Defensive teams in the League
4) Destroyed a good move in finding a young DT (M. Bennett) by exposing him to the waiver wire. Releasing someone with less promise and a better chance of clearing waivers (DD Lewis) would have made much more sense
5) Traded a pro-bowl caliber LB for a DL who barely shows up in the stat sheet
6) Planned on a starting OG who couldn't work out all offseason and then act suprised when he can't pass his physical before training camp.
7) Basically ignored the OL in FA.

I wonder if Seattle worked James out before they signed him? I would love to ask Ruskell this in person.

Monroe dog sorry i hate the cougs lol. All really good points.

QB old vet but i still believe in him. No future behind him though.

RB No real tallent their. JJ cut by other team and has cracked 1000 yards like once. Forsett love this guy but just a 3rd down back.

FB I Like Shmitt I will give this a passing grade.
WR Big money wr is getting older. Burleson solid. Branch would like to have that 1st round pick back. No real young up and comers behind them.

TE Carlson A+
OL Walt done no real replacement. Nobody to get excited about at LG. C I would say a very disapointing 1st round pick. RG Unger get excited about this guy. RT Willis Locklear I dunno really.

DL Hey Lo Jack and Mebane seem to be playing well and everyone else seems to be so so. Kerney is done. But overall nobody can pressure the QB

OLB Curry looks like a real good player for the future. Lofa cant seem to stay healthy. Hill can never stay healthy. He is hurt every year. Hawthorne looks great. Trade him or start him is going to be
the decison at the end of the year.

Dbacks Need work. I think we need two safetys. Grant can stary and play if we upgrade tallent around him. Tru get healthy and of course Wilson is good nickle.

So really where is this team going to go in the future? I think they will stay at the bottom of the NFC. They need future players at QB WR. Reload at RB OL DB's.

i hate to say this boys but i just we are oblivious to the facts around us. our players are not good at all. Wilson is not good, and for anyone to say that is smoking. i am tired of watching games where theirs tips/easy picks/big hit opportunities and we make none with our secondary. Babinuex is horrible, for anyone to say he is better than a D grade is high. Our DEF scheme is crap, someone brought up in an earlier post about switching to a 3-4 and taht has to be done.

COuld you imagine Ruskell if you had peterson here and ran the 3-4 with our 4 linebackers?

of course not , I give Ruskell no passes for any moves he has done. look at his rap sheet since 2005, which moves panned out for a year and now are killing us cap wise( kerney )

Look i love my seahawks, i love the players and felt players like mebane , tapp, tatupu, butler were all underated in this league, but the facts are facts boy, this team has no direction and the wouldnt is closed. Our payroll is spent in the most ubsurd ways possble, loaded at two POS, LB and WR which is the worst way to go.

Get a Gm in here that knows how the Game has expanded , and knows that no matter what , the agme is won in the trenches, always has and always will.

To say we draft a RB first round next year is outrageous. if we needed a QB of the future so bad why draft teel and waste a pick?

Their is significant upgrades next year to be made, half is our personel.

1.swithc to 3-4
2.REdding goes
3.Star tapp, mebane, kerney, lofa, hawthorne, hill, curry.
4. you fix the mess that is called our OL ASAP
5.well you cant trade HUSH cuz his value is gone, way to pay him like a number one RUskell.
5.GET DB THAT KNOW HOW TO MAKE PLAYS NOT JUST BE ON THE GOD DAMN FIELD!!!!!!!

I love all the experts months after. The last post about housh being crap; is crap!!!! I will bet that you were excited when we signed him. We ahve yet to see his full potential. If he is pulling in 70-90 catches next year are you going to appologize? I doubt it!! Of course you will say how you knew that signing him was a good move and you would have done it too. I get so sick of this crap.

Oh and STTBM I am starting to agree with you that Knapp is a crappy play caller. Sorry to jump on your case about it. You were right!!

Dude, you're an idiot. 3-4 D ends are the size of mebane not tapp and kerney. Mebane is not big enough to be a NT in a 3-4, Maybe Cole but prob not. And Leroy Hill is not an OLB or Hawthorne a ILB in the 3-4. Kerney in his prime maybe an OLB in 3-4 and Curry would be a beast in a 3-4. We don't have the personel for the 3-4! Housh is not now or ever gonna be traded. Let him and Matt have more than 4-5 games together...Some fans are just dumb and bandwagon

no way we switch to the 3-4. That would require a complete revamp of our defense and for what? An inferior defensive scheme. No Thanks.

Stick to the 4-3 but can this Tampa 2 crap. Its a dying scheme for a reason, ever wonder why Chicago's defense is a lot less fearsome? Its the Tampa 2.

.....and Rankin is gonna make some plays, guaranteed! He is a beast and different than any other back we have (as in he is can break a run longer than 4 yards on any given play) The cards' and the '9ers are trying to give us the division so let's take advantage.

A 3-4 would not be that difficult to switch into. I would make red bryant the nose, and Lawrence Jackson and mebane the two ends. Have cole be the back up nose along with redding and another vet DE in free agency. I would then move Darrell Tapp to linebacker. Linebackers: Tapp, Tatupu, Curry, and Hill. Then we go out and get Taylor Mays and play him like USC plays him, as a center fielder. People have a valid point when they say Taylor isn't a ball hawk, but what he is, is a big play killer. I am so sick of big plays killing us. I would love to have Berry, but he won't be around, and to compare Taylor Mays to Ken Hamlin is ridiculus. Mays is 25 pounds heavier and runs a fourty two tenths of a second faster.
...
written by omar little, November 04, 2009
Taylor Mays IS Ken Hamlin. Both are the exact same player. Visit Walterfootball.com and they have a nice and accurate write up on Mays (along with most of the top prospect) but they are 100% on with their assesment of Mays. For all of Mays athletism he sure does take bad angles and misses tackles.

IMO Mays is not worthy of being anything higher than a 3rd round pick. If he declared for 09 he would have been a second or third rounder, but he chose to hang around an extra year to come out in 10 with its weak safety class. He is nothing special at safety, nor will he ever be.
...
written by omar little, November 04, 2009
I would like to see us take a large cornerback like Ras-I Dowling and try him at either safety or corner he has the size to be good at either but his somewhat questionable slow timed speed may make him a liability at corner. IMO he has a much better future in the league at safety. I see him as this years Malcom Jenkins, if he is there with our second round pick I'd be satisfied with him.

Texashawk, thank you. I'm so sick of this 20/20 hindsight, armchair GM crap. Obviously our OL is in a shambles and it will have to be addressed in the offseason. But, last year our WR situation was that way and we all cheared when that got fixed with the addition of Housh and Butler. Now, all the people that wanted us to draft Crabtree are calling for Ruskell's head because he didn't draft a OL in the first round. This team has problems and suggesting solutions is great, but don't throw the "I told you so" crap out, cause you didn't.

To Omar Little: A month ago walterfootball had Taylor Mays compared to Sean Taylor, and now they have him compared to Roy Williams. What has happened in the last month? Maybe if you watch college football you would have seen the Ohio St game where Taylor Mays SPRAINED HIS KNEE. He went back in not 100% and then missed the Washington game. Those kind of injuries take at least a month to heal. If a healthy Taylor Mays is like Sean Taylor, and a hurt Taylor Mays is like a Roy Williams, I would draft that guy any day of the week.

Re: Mays - What the defense needs is a coverage safety, a ballhawk who can create turnovers. Mays is a big hitter who sometimes gets lost in coverage and can take bad tackling angles. Using a top-10 or 15 pick would be a mistake, in my opinion. I don't think we are seeing the ill effects of an injured Mays, I think we are seeing offenses figure out how to play to his weaknesses. If they can do it in college, you can be sure they will do it in the NFL. I believe that Eric Berry from Tennessee would be a better fit. I also think that using a 1st round pick on a safety would be a mistake either way, considering this offense is falling apart at the seams. It would be a luxury pick that this franchise can't afford to make. It would, however, be a very Ruskell thing to do.

TJ,

I do watch college football, and I always make a point to try and catch big name schools or big name players. When I watch USC I have a chance to do both, so I try to watch USC above any other school. So when I say Mays is a mediorce at best safety, you can bet its more than me just voicing an uneducated opinion.

I also think the comparision to Sean Taylor was more to his physical nature, not his skill. Besides lets face it, Taylor was a decent safety but he was only a pro bowler because his hits were entertaining. Its horrible to say but if he were still alive people would not be viewing him as a "great" safety he became in death.

If you want to see a pick wasted on an athletic freak of nature jump over to Oakland, because Taylor Mays is a classic Al Davis pick. Great 40 time, big, physical, but just an average football player. Mays is this years, Heyward-Bey, or Vernon Gholston.

I agree agree about Eric Berry. I think he will be a great safety as well. However to say Sean Taylor an ALL PRO SAFETY was overrated implies how opinionated you are Omar little. Larry Fitzgerald and other large recievers eat us alive. Why? not because we don't have good coverage skills. It's cuz we have the umpa lumpas in the backfield. I want the biggest ugliest most pissed off football players we can find. Our secondary scares nobody, nobody.

I also agree the offensive line needs serious help. If we can manage to get Russell Okung or Brian Baluga with our first pick, I think we should move up and get the second best safety available. You move Unger to center keep Spencer as a backup shift locklear back to his regular position and use willis at guard.

Let the other three guys in our secondary be the coverage and let Mays strike fear into widerecieving cores throughout the league. Mays has had multiple solid years playing safety. This isn't his best, so why don't we reap the benefit of the guy following to the latter half of the first round and grab a tackle first. That's all I'm saying

Well I'll agree with you that Sean Taylor was an all pro. Too bad you failed to mention he was named all pro posthoumously, further proving my point that Taylor was 3 times the safety he was in death than as a Redskin. Not too mention the only time he was voted to the pro bowl when he was alive was as an alternate to the great Brian Dawkins. Neither Taylor nor Mays were/will be anything in the NFL.

I do like you idea of moving Willis over to guard that makes a lot of sense, but IMO Brian Baluga is more of a RT than a LT. He lacks the quick feet of an elite pass protector. Okung or Bruce Campbell seem like better prospects at LT.

USAFANARC--For most of us criticising Ruskell's direction, it is hardly hindsight. I for one have been on his case for years for his mistakes, both in philosophy and in single moves.

I have no illusions that I am GM-worthy--I am simply a fan. However, I do know some things about football, and I try to use logic. And funny thing--most of my issues with Ruskell have proven my case--time and time again.

I have long bitched at Ruskell for neglecting the offensive line, both in the draft and free agency. Ruskell brought in undersized, undertalented players who four years later still are unable to stay healthy, or play at an acceptable level when uninjured. (Same thing with the WR's). To top it off, Ruskell never made a move on OL with ZBS experience who were available. BOTH of Manning's G's were available, yet we never brought them in for a tryout. NOpe, Timmay! was sure our 5th round and below losers would work out. How did that work out?!

Ruskell believed in short underweight D-lineman, and look how well that worked. He looted our offense to build the most expensive mediocre defense of all time. He drafted WR's based on thier blocking ability, then wondered why they couldnt catch. Oh, and RB's arent important--yet he spent all that money on Julius Jones and Duckett, letting cheaper better players such as Morris and Weaver go simply to stroke his own ego.

Ruskell ran off talented players simply becuse they were Holmgren guys, and in every single case, replaced them with more expensive players who underperformed.

He spent tons of money on Branch and Housh, neither of whom can handle number 1 WR duties. We have Burleson who is exciting but the most unreliable starting WR in the entire NFL.

THe worst part is that he did all this with a blank check from ALlen. And I called him out on each of these things long before this. And very few people gave me credit for knowing anything.

And I am truly disappointed. I like that RUskell values character, I like that he does so well drafting defensive talent (even if it doenst seem to translate to defensive performance as a whole), I like that he is trying to build a team with chemistry. Its just that I see a serious lack of performance from Ruskells philosophies, and I think most of them are doomed to failure. The kind of offense that Ruskell wants wont succeed in todays NFL, not even with the Ravens defense--and ours is so far from thiers it isnt funny.

The thing is, the holes in our team shouldnt be so visible, nor so accurately predicted by folks like me who are only educated fans. It shouldnt be so easy for me to predict the issues and problems. Especially not four years into Ruskells reign.

For all those preaching patience, since when is it acceptable to have a terrible offensive line four years in a row, when you have the ability to max out the cap every year?! ANd while injuries decimated our line, it wasnt any good to start with.

Im still not ready to scream for Rukell to be fired, as he has done some really great things, which I have raved about often. To me it depends on 1) how the team responds the rest of the year--do they get better as injured players come back, does the ZBS begin to work, does the defense begin to play consistently well?, 2) DOes Ruskell fire KNapp like anyone with a brain can see needs to happen, 3) Does Ruskell make cutting deadweight FA's such as J Jones, Kerney, Branch, Burleson, etc a priority, 3) Will this offseason finally be the year Ruskell fixes the secondary and the offensive line by bringing in some first or second tier FA's--or will he stand pat?(If he wants to stand pat, or says he can fix those units with scrubs I want him canned).

Billt recently advocated giving Ruskell a three year extension--which would mean giving him EIGHT YEARS with a blank check and seven with total control to field a winning team. Ridiculous! Even Holmy only had 4 years to do that, and he started with FAR less talent than Ruskell has.

As I said, Im not sure I want Ruskell fired after this season, but I definitely want to see this ship turning around, see a few major changes immediately following the season, or else it will be time, in my opinion, to look elsewhere: before Hasselbecks last years are wasted driving this franchise into the ground.
