Marcus Trufant was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list prior to the first session of Training Camp today. His injury situation has not yet been disclosed, but we should know more by the end of the day.

Update: from Seattle PI:

Trufant had not participated in the Seahawks' recent off-season minicamps due to a sore hamstring, so this move is believed related to that.

Being on the PUP list at this point is not critical as if a player begins camp with that designation, he can be moved to the active roster at any time.

Yuck. Hope this isn't serious and that the team is just being cautious after last season's injury debacle.

Groz & Gas on KJR said Marcus has a tweked back and it is not expected to be a major injury.

JRuss -- check the update, it sounds like it's probably the hammy. We'll hear more in about an hour when practice is out.

Not a great first day though, yikes. Lose Wahle, concerns about Tru and no Curry yet.

Seems hamstrings are always a problem early in camp. Not too worried about it, but why the PUP?

Damn hamstrings and backs....if it's not a hammy, it's a back. (If it's not a labrum or an ACL, that is.)

I fear I'm oversensitive to the injury reports after last season. Perhaps some tequila to steady my nerves is all I really need.

I agree the first day has been not so great if you ask me, Tru hurt, no curry, and wahle gone.
Kinda sad.

Not trying to be insensitive to Wahle's impending retirement but he wasn't a real plus for us last season. His mental mistakes killed some critical drives and he was an injury concern all season long until after the 10th game he was gone on IR anyway. Carolina release him for a reason and that was that he was damaged goods and not able to play at his former level any longer. We were so starved for guards particularly any with some real experience (we went after Dielman the year before), we had to take a chance on him due to no other options existing. No knock on Ruskell.

Sometimes all you can do is take what's available and do the best you can and so we did with Wahle. It's an indication of the state of the team at the guard position that Wahle in his condition could still become a starter here last season. With his injury lingering this season and the reports of bone on bone in his shoulder, he wasn't much of a bet to do any better this season. I'm glad we didn't waste any time on him and can now plug Unger in and see who between Sims, Willis, and Wrotto can bring up their level of play to man the other guard spot. We're much better off having young linemen with upside learing to play together even if there's a learning curve involved in the long run. That's how you build a killer offensive line not by bringing in another aging veteran every year and start the gelling process over again.

Danny O'Neil just posted about the PUP on his blog. Sounds like a back tweak that isn't too serious but they're opting to be careful.

Smart take on the situation, Bill. Wahle was done when he got here - bone on bone - eeeeeesh!

There's enough talent here that can just fire away and hit somebody in the ZBS vs the carefully orchestrated precision of Holmy's system that required veteran status and/or Hall of Fame credentials to learn in less than 3 years. Worked fine when you had multiple All Pros and a 10 year vet like '05. Not with the bunch of younguns we have now. We'll be OK here. Maybe not stellar as a unit, but decent. Which will open enough holes to move the chains and buy enough time for any number of tall/physical and fast/agile receivers to get the ball and make plays.

I predict many ugly wins.

Turns out, it's not his hammy after all.. It's (drumroll please) his back.

Hi Gang,

wasn't 'back tweaked' and 'not serious' exactly what they said about Hass last year???

Tru on the PUP should open up one extra roster spot for another piece of Camp Fodder, a second 'walk-on' guard to try out for the team.

My prediction has Curry in camp on Monday.

Billt--And why has the LG and RG position been such a concern here in Seattle for going on four straight years?! If it isnt due to Ruskell, then I dont know what is...Ruskell is responsible for not signing any upper tier G's/C's, utnil finally all that was left was Wahle. He is responsible for drafting Spencer, Sims, WRotto, etc who thus far have given us nothing at best, and lousy play at worst.

I dont understand how you can bash Holmgren and give Ruskell so much credit for our success, then turn around and give NONE of the blame to Ruskell for our struggles, especially on the offensive line.

Any way you slice it, Ruskell is the reason this line is in tatters still: his theory is that you dont need to draft offensive lineman high very often, that continuity is the most important part. Well, if your line stinks so bad you constantly shuffle players, how do you get any continuity?

Before you blow your stack and accuse me of "dumping crap" on Ruskell again, realize that I firmly believe Ruskell has done fine overall---but our offensive line struggles, defensive line issues, and secondary problems are his direct responsibility, because he remade all those sqauds in his own way, to his own theories, and so the failures and successes of those units rest most solidly on his shoulders--- at least in my opinion.

Just as he gets most of the credit for the last two drafts we have had (both EXCELLENT).

PS Billt--I agree with your assertion that its a good thing that Unger will now have a good chance a starting at LG, and that putting young guys in and helping them gel is the way to go, not bringing in has-beens every year.

Those were excellent points, and well stated.

And I realize Ruskell did everything humanly possible to snag Dielman, its just he seemed to give up on signing anyone good from Free Agency for two years after that.
