Eric Williams reports that the Seattle Seahawks have released former Pro-Bowl offensive guard Mike Wahle, likely ending his career. Center David Washington was also released to free up room for Grey Ruegamer, the other offensive lineman who met with the Hawks earlier this week.

Williams:

Wahle, 32, started 138 games in his 11-year career but failed a team physical. He started 10 games for Seattle in 2008, but succumbed to season-ending surgery on his right shoulder last December. It was the same shoulder Wahle had previous surgery on to repair a torn labrum while he was in Carolina.

I would imagine that Max Unger will formally take the #1 depth position at LG, but it could be Rob Sims with Unger backing him up, at least through the first preseason game or two. That is predicated on Ray Willis being slotted in at RG which was rumored in the past, but may or may not be the case.

Well it was worth a shot picking him up last offseason. I'm glad we have Unger, although wouldn't it be nice to have him work up to it slowly?

Hope Unger is as good as he seems. Learn quickly, Padawan Unger.

Wahle was never a great help to the team but a stop gap measure at best. This season all he would do is impede the progression of getting a young talented offensive line together and letting them play and gel into a good unit. Sad to see any NFL player have to hang it up particluarly because of injury but from a team perspective, I for one am glad we're going to go with the younger guys. Let Unger, Sims, Willis, and Wrotto battle it out for the two starting guard spots and then lets let this line play together for a while. Of course, the Walter Jones situation is looming in the near future too but we'll just have to deal with that one when it comes due.

Bill, that's why we're all hoping Denver tanks this year, so we can pick up the best LT in the draftsmilies/smiley.gif

Sorry to see a great player's body unable to answer the bell. The show will go on, as it must in a league also known as Not For Long. I'm excited for the group we've got as I thought they held their own after getting thrown to the wolves at the end of last season. No substitute for facing off against the best competition at gameday speed. Hope it helped. I believe it will given the number of years that the young guys have been in the pros, Everyone except Walter, Locklear and the 2 retreads we just signed has very little game experience, but enough to finally figure it out a little.

Interesting point that another Addict brought up that Unger has played well at multiple positions in the ZBS for the last 4 years.
