The end of the 2009 season is finally here, and it was a decent game, competitive at least. The defense played with a ton of heart and Will Herring looked fantastic.

Perfect finish. Competative game and we lost it at the end to secure probably the 6th pick in the draft behind Washington who almost knowcked off SD to give us the possible 5th pick. 6th will yeild a good player. Denver lost too so our second pick should be around 16 or 17 or so.

Not a bad effort by the Hawks. Kinda wonder if Ryan's screw-up was a result of having a new long-snapper. Where's Kelly Jennings when you need him? :-}

Deon Grant had a good game, Forsett was awesome, Julius Jones actually wasn't too bad. Our running game seemed to work better when Gibson was in at guard.

Sixth and sixteenth in the first round? Works for me, although I'd rather not have a top-ten pick. I'm hoping we can swap the #6 for more picks. Our new GM has a lot of holes to fill.

Hopefully a GM will be hired soon and the coaching staff will be fired. However, if Mora is kept around, I'm wondering if he'd pick up Zorn as OC when he's fired by the Redskins. Might be a good replacement for Knapp and it would give Hass a familiar face and his West Coast Offense back. I'm thinking out loud here, so I'm not convinced this would work. However, I've always thought Zorn wasn't meant to be a HC, but could be a great OC.

Combining the W-L records for all 16 opponents, we had an easier schedule than Cleveland or Oakland, which is why we have the 6 instead of the 8.

Rebuild the Offensive Line
written by Riggle, January 03, 2010
Okung and Iupati would make great additions to this team.

The Offensive Line has been neglected over the past five years. Imagine (from left to right) Okung, Iupati, Unger, Sims and Locklear. That would be a fine OL for the next five years. I understand the need for play makers, but this team will not be able to block for the play makers unless we rebuild the line.

Four teams have already finished 8-8, five if the Jets lose today.

Twelve teams finished under .500, so the highest an 8-8 team could pick is at #13.

Using the SOS for these five teams as it stood before today's games, here is the draft order, with SOS in parentheses:

13 - San Francisco (.483)
14 - Jets (.525)
15 - Seattle from Denver (.529)
16 - Giants (.542)
17 - Tennessee (.546)

SEAHAWK PICKS
written by Louis Phan, January 03, 2010
You should make a post about the seahawk's draft picks.

Seahawks will be picking 6th and 15th/16th (If jets win, Broncos = 15th...if jets lose, then Broncos = 16th)

I calculated all the strength of schedules of the 5 teams that are 8-8 and the Jets who are 8-7:

Carolina = .535 (but will be .539 if Jets win)
Titans = .535 (but will be .539 if Bengals win)
Broncos = .527 (but will be .531 if Bengals win)
Giants = .500
San Fran = .469

Jets are 8-7 so if they win, they will be in the playoffs and obviously pick after those 5 teams, but if they lose they have a SOS of .516 so they would be in between Giants and Broncos.

So assuming Jets WIN:
Carolina = 17th pick
Titans = 16th pick
Broncos = 15th pick
Giants = 14th pick
San Fran = 13th pick

If Jets LOSE:
Titans = 18th
Carolina = 17th
Broncos = 16th
Jets = 15th
Giants = 14th
San Fran = 13th

So Seahawks will get 6th and 15/16th

Hope that helped =D

Hass was tough as nails out there today. We still need to find his replacement, sorry to say he won't play 3 or 4 more years. Hopefully the line holds up and we can send him out on a high note next season. All you Hass-haters.... seriously.... SHUT THE FUCK UP! We know he won't be here forever, why don't you just shut your fucking mouths, pay him the same respects you pay Walter Jones, and enjoy the last season of the best QB to ever wear Seahawk blue. Hopefully you won't have to live through 3 failed 1st round "saviors" like us old-timers did. I'd rather watch him throw a few too many INTs next year than watch Rex fucking Grossman or Tyler Thigpen do the same goddamn thing. Good one Kidder95!

Tis the season of hype. Okung is not a top 10 pick unless you add hype into the evaluation.

Kudo's to Matt Hasselbeck for everything!
Bobby I agree to some extent
written by SSReporters, January 03, 2010
However look at Aaron Rodgers. Most sacks allowed in the league and he's blowing people out of the water. As are McNabb, Romo, and Roethlisberger (despite no playoffs).

A good QB can overcome a bad offensive line. The 2007 edition of Matt Hasselbeck did exactly that.

When you're 35 and oft-injured it zaps you out. Hasselbeck is finished and I hated seeing him go out on a whimper.

TacomaHawk I am just frustrated with so many fans not thinking about the future and living on the past. Whether it's hiring Zorn, hiring Holmgren, keeping Matt despite signs of decline, etc. it makes for seemingly unintelligent conversation.

Guys all I'm asking is we have to think the big picture. This coaching staff blows and they all need to go. Many of the players including fan favorites and legends like Hass, need to go. I don't want to live in the past. I love this team too much not to just follow the heard.
Now prepare yourself...

There isn't a player available in this draft -- not even Suh -- who I would trade both of our first round picks to get.

In fact, given our needs at so many positions, I'd be looking to trade DOWN.

There are only a few players that I like at the top at the draft. But I think they'll be gone before the sixth pick. I don't like ANY of the QB's with that high a pick. So unless there's a marquee talent still on the board when it's our turn, I'll be hoping somebody else sees someone they like enough to trade with us.

The guys I want, like Iupati and Gerhart, should still be available later on.

I also have a hunch that those of you who want a QB will see some decent values on the board for our pick in the middle of the first round.
...
written by TacomaHawk, January 03, 2010

SSReporters,

I agree with you that the team needs to look forward. There just isn't an obvious solution. I don't see any QBs in the draft that make me excited, but then I'm also pretty gunshy having lived through the worst of times. I'd be all for drafting one this year, one next year and have a little Walsh/Aikman competition. You've seen the list of FAs, and there is nothing there but straws to grasp at. Hell, if we had a decent backup to begin with we probably wouldn't even have this conversation.
It just seems to me that Seneca and Teel are not the answer. And I'd rather start a veteran with a rookie on the bench unless that rookie just flat outplays him out of the gate. And out of all the possible veterans who will be available without sacrificing draft picks, Hass makes the most sense. He certainly makes more sense than Seneca or Teel. And bringing in Rex Grossman or whoever isn't going to get the team any closer to it's ultimate goal. Even if they could play better than Matt, as stats would suggest, it won't provide for a deep playoff run, and the "extra" wins would only drop them further on the draft chart, possibly preventing them from getting a great prospect in the '11 draft.

No way Okung slips past KC or Detroit. THey cannot afford to let their young QBs take any more hits, especially after Stafford suffered a season ending injury. I live Bruce Campbell with our first pick, he does have a slight injury history but I think his upside is to high to pass on. In 2-3 years he will be the clear cut best tackle from this draft. He is also more physical than Okung in run blocking so that is a huge bonus in my book.

Grab Derrick Morgan or a guard with Denver's pick and I'm happy. Don't get Spiller with that pick without O line improvement, Best could be around with our second rounder.

I like and respect your Aaron Rodgers analogy but I simply feel that that isn't normal but you're definitely right about him and being able to put up good numbers while being sacked a lot. Most QBs, young or old, don't play as well as he has been with that bad of a line. And one thing Rodgers has going for him, over us, is that we don't have an electric WR like Greg Jennings either. We certainly need an electric playmaker too.

A counter point to the Romo and Big Ben analogies are that those guys, along with Rogers, it is well documented that they hold onto the ball longer than many other QBs and, therefore, they create more sack opportunities for themselves (and that makes their lines look worse than they are... although I do think the Pitt OL is bad though), whereas Matt gets rid of the ball quickly, for the most part, but still takes a beating.

No matter what, we must get our future QB in this or next years draft. My only problem with getting one this year is that I don't trust anyone. I don't trust Claussen. I don't totally trust Bradford (although I like him better than Jimmy, even though he doesn't have the big arm), I don't trust McCoy, etc. I don't want to get a new guy just for the sake of drafting a probable bust either (although none of us can know for sure, right now, if they are going to be busts or not).

SSReporter,
Just for the record, I have posted many times saying that we should not bring back Holmgren. The reason that I suggested Zorn as OC (only if Mora is retained and Knapp is fired) is because I don't think they will draft a quarterback that can go on day one. So, if we are going to keep Hass, then Zorn may be someone to consider. Hass has obviously struggled with a new system. If you bring in a new OC that brings with him a new system, we will suffer through another year of Hass struggling to learn yet another system. Anyway, as I said, I'm not sold on the idea, but just wanted to throw it out there. I would love to see the entire coaching staff gone and an entirely new staff brought in. But if Mora is kept and Hass is going to be our QB for another couple years....

If you believe that over the long run everything tends to revert to the mean, then you should also believe that the Seahawks are overdue to strike it rich at the QB position.

I mean, we've already had our Stouffer, our Gelbaugh, our McGwire and our Mirer. Even our good QB's (Zorn, Krieg, Hasselbeck, Moon, Dilfer and Friesz) were never "great". (Moon had a great career, but only a couple years with us and they weren't his best.)

The only problem with this theory is that it's refuted by the history of the Chicago Bears, whose fans have been waiting for a superstar QB ever since WW2. (McMahon came close, but I don't think he qualifies.)

Bobby, darn you to the nethermost regions of Heck! You stole my fire (yet again)This time on how long Rogers, et al hold onto the ball.

SS Reporters, Your comment about a good QB overcoming a bad line is true, to a point. But this isn't simply a bad line, it's an historically atrocious line! I've been watching football for 40 years, and this year was the first time I ever saw a QB get sacked on a 1 step drop. I actually cheered an incomplete pass today, simply because Hass actually had a pocket from which to throw. I hadn't seen that in weeks. The only way for a QB to overcome THAT line, is for him to learn to levitate.

As for the draft, at the beginning of the season, I was on the Okung bandwagon. Now, I'm not so impressed. The players that I would like to see with the #6 pick are Morgan, McCoy (not Colt, for god's sake) and Hayden. I'm on the fence with Spiller. (I didn't include Suh, no point, he won't be there) I would really rather trade down, (and someone's liable to want these guys, Berry or Bryant, or even Bradford enough to trade, so it's not all that far fetched). If the pick we get is in the mid to late teens, use it on Bulaga. (I'm reserving our # 14 for Iupati) If he's gone, use it on Brown. If, by some freak chance, Morgan, McCoy (not Colt, for god's sake), Hayden or Spiller are available, use it on them. Of course, all this depends on what (if anything) we can get in FA. I know we need a QB of the future, but I just don't like any of the QB's available with any of the picks we've got in the first two rounds. (nor do I like any of the FA possibilities) Get the trenches sorted out, give the O line a chance to gel for a year, and do the best we can there next year.

That's funny shit mate, but alas unfortunately true.

Lot of work to be done before we are competitive again. If we can makes damn good strides this year and next then by season 2011/12 we could potentially be Superbowl bound. All ifs buts and maybes but it is feasible.

Herring can cover, Hawthorne can rush, Tatupu can stack the line, and Curry can supposidly do something. Trade Hill if you can. My God, Herring is already better than Hill.

So there is my worthless and unintelligent rant for today. Be well.

I'm no draft expert (although my wife swears I should be!), but I'd suggest everyone find some tape of Okung. You will not like what you see.

Then go look at Anthony Davis, and Mike Iupati. Or, if you are really into it, check out Jason Fox.

Also, for those who want Spiller (and I am one of them), see Reggie Bush. Make sure you include his injuries in your analysis. Spiller is hurt often, but is tough as nails. Still, they are comparable players. NO will most likely let Bush walk this year. Bush as a FA, Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati, with a QB as 2nd rounder would be nice.

But then, what the hell do I know.
