2009 didn't do Seahawks fans any favors, did it? Welcome to 2010 everybody, a new year, a new decade, a new chance to rebuild a broken football team. It seems like a good time to look back, but I think we've been doing that enough. Let's take a look forward, into the future, all the way into the year 2010 (April).

  • Rob Staton has completed his final Mock Draft of the old year. Like last year, Rob has the Seahawks going hard after an explosive offensive playmaker. They failed to grab Crabtree last year, and the offense has looked like a slow motion, tear-filled, train wreck. Will the new GM listen to everyone's favorite British football fan?
  • WalterFootball has updated their Mock Draft on the final day of the year, and it's good through three rounds (though, the Seahawks don't have a third round pick, so your clicking is minimized). They've got the Seahawks grabbing OT Bruce Campbell with their first pick, that same explosive playmaker at 19, and DE Jason Pierre-Paul from USF with their second round pick.
  • Rob Rang has been one of the most astute observers of the Seahawks in the national media. He's got the Hawks grabbing OT Russell Okung at 7 and swiping RB Ryan Matthews from Fresno State with Denver's pick. This seems like a huge reach for Matthews. CBS Co-drafter-guy Chad Reuter has us taking Okung and, again, Mr. Explosive.
  • The folks over at NFL Draft Site have a seven round Mock up, but most of it is random. That's okay, the first few rounds make sense, and might be what a lot of Hawk fans would consider a dream draft: QB Jimmy Clausen, OT Brian Bulaga (Iowa), RB Toby Gerhart. In the fourth, they've got us taking a Safety (Van Eskridge from East Carolina).

You make it seem like drafting Crabtree would've helped this offense
written by SSReporters, January 01, 2010
That would mean Hasselbeck could throw a 10 yard pass properly, and the offensive line could actually block consistently.

Interesting comments on Mora:

19th Pick: Seattle Seahawks: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson

Jim Mora Jr. is one of the worst head coaches in NFL history. He's only made the playoffs once in four seasons, essentially taking Dan Reeves' old team to the NFC Championship in 2004. Teams often quit on Mora at the end of the year. And Mora has a huge blind spot for figuring out what to do with his talent. In Atlanta, he foolishly tried to put QB Dog Killer in the West Coast offense, which predictably failed.

Now, in Seattle, he just doesn't seem to understand that Justin Forsett is infinitely superior to the horrible Julius Jones.

Because the Seahawks obviously don't view Forsett as the answer to the position, they'll jump at the opportunity to draft C.J. Spiller if the option is there come April. Spiller is the most dynamic offensive talent in this class, capable of going the distance at any moment. Seattle's offense needs a player like that.

Not especially enamored with any of the "top" LT picks in this draft, and honestly don't believe there ARE any "top" QB picks in this draft (even though some will go 1st rd) Spiller, Hayden, or one of the top D linemen with our first pick, Iupati with our denver pick, and see what's available at T, or, if we don't get Spiller, and Best is around, get him with our second rounder...

Love to see Berry with first pick, Best tackle available with 2nd pick, Best with 2nd rounder.

If Berry isn't there, Okung 1st pick, Spiller 2nd pick, Iupati with second rounder.

There isn't much of a dropoff after the top 5 so if either of those guys aren't there, trade down and get extra picks if they can.
FA set up to draft
written by lars hanson, January 01, 2010
What the Seahawks do in FA will set up what they do in the draft.

If the Seahawks go for Logan Mankins (LG), WR Brandon Marshall (explosive WR) and a S like Atari Bigby they would go OT with Okung 1st round a. CJ Spiller 1b and then Iupati in the 2nd round for RG.

Either way Matt is our QB, mora isn't our HC. Matt needs an OL, an explosive WR, a RB and a smart OC then he's set.

Chris I'll give you a chance to rip my mock draft or in some way personally attack me through it.

And S Eric Berry is not worth it, wait till the mid first round for him.

Lars - no ripping needed. The free agency period could potentially be very interesting this year, or it could be a snore. With 218 previously unrestricted free agents likely becoming RFAs, many of the top talents who were going to be available simply won't be.

Now, not all of those talents will be offered tenders by their existing teams, but it has the potential to severely dent the impact the free agent period can have. Plus, new GM might not be a big player in free agency. We were spoiled by Ruskell in that sense, if nothing else.

Berry isn't going to make it out of the Top 6 picks, let alone mid first round. If he is there I think we have to pick him. In a down draft on big time talent, Berry stands out amongst the rest to me. He's the real deal.

Taylor Mays is a physical freak, but he is most likely headed to outside linebacker in the NFL. His coverage skills are absolutely horrible. He seems like a perfect pick for the Raiders. And we don't need another linebacker.

If Berry is gone I think we take Okung. Hopefully we don't take a QB early in the draft. None of them really seem worthy this year.

Free Agency Could Be A Very Poor Source Of Talent This Year
written by BillT, January 02, 2010
Chris wrote for Seahawk Addicts concerning 2010 becoming an uncapped year and the rule changes that will invoke:

Now, not all of those talents will be offered tenders by their existing teams, but it has the potential to severely dent the impact the free agent period can have.

Add to that the fact that if there is an uncapped year, there will be additional tags available for teams to protect their players with. I heard something about two additional transition tags becoming available and you could use all three (the franchise tag and the two transitional tags). Being too lazy to do any research today, if anyone knows for sure what the tags will be in an uncapped year, please jump in and educate us.

The point is between free agents becoming restricted free agents and each team being able to protect more players, none of the real quality players will hit the market unless he's a real head case or a team is trying to dump dead wood without cap ramifications. That will leave teams like the Seahawks who need more than just a couple of players without a major source of replenishment. We'd better hope they get the CBA worked out and the cap stays in place or it might take much longer than we all hoped for to get the team re-built and back on track using just the draft. Guys like Spencer and Sims could become absolutely necessary to retain because there will be no replacements available.

1. Joe Montana '78
2. Joe Theismann '70
3. Daryle Lamonica '62
4. Steve Beuerlein '86
5. Rick Mirer '92

Berry Not Making Top Ten?
written by BillT, January 02, 2010
Here's a few quotes from various sources (Walter Football, Chattanooga Times, and Wikipedia). I think Berry will become a doninant player in the NFL. He is being hailed as the second coming of Ed Reed and who wouldn't want Ed Reed on their team? I will be surprised if Berry makes it out of the top 6 players drafted. I haven't seen a reputable mock yet where he makes it out of the top ten. I would be totally happy with him as our first pick if we can get our LT problem solved elsewhere.

Eric Berry was selected as a team captain and is a preseason All-American and was a unanimous All-SEC preseason choice. In October, he was named a midseason All-American by The Sporting News.[12]

Again Eric Berry was nominated as a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, the Lott Trophy, and the Chuck Bednarik Award. He won the Thorpe Award and was named a unanimous All American for the second time in his college career.

One of the best safety prospects to come along in a very long time. Eric Berry, a first-team All-American, had 72 tackles, 8.5 TFL, six passes broken up, three sacks and a whopping seven interceptions (two for touchdowns) as a mere sophomore. Safeties seldom go in the top five, but Berry could be an exception.

Berry has never been a typical defensive back, and not just because he's lined up at practically every defensive position other than tackle.

The son of former UT tailback and captain James Berry, Eric started the first game of his college career and was a Freshman All-American. He was named a team captain the following preseason -- an unprecedented title for a sophomore.

He responded with one of the best defensive back seasons in college football history, and he's been placed on several All-America teams this season despite playing a different role, closer to the line of scrimmage and generally being avoided by quarterbacks like he had swine flu.

"A lot of times on film, you can watch people point him out before the snap and make sure they go to the other side of the field," UT junior defensive end Chris Walker said. "It's pretty funny."

It's also ineffective much of the time, Vols junior wide receiver Gerald Jones said.

"You can try to avoid him, and you can throw away from him, but he's still going to get near the ball before the play is over," Jones said. "His range is ridiculous. He's just a really smart guy, and he's a really great athlete.

"He's the best DB I've ever gone against, period, and he makes me a better player."

" I haven't seen a reputable mock yet where he makes it out of the top ten." LOL - BillT, classy as ever.

So prey tell me, Bill. Which team in the top six drafts Berry? In my non-reputable mock, I've got three defensive lineman, a quarterback, an offensive lineman and a receiver going in the top six. Three of those top six own a top class safety already. All six of those teams are completely miserable and cannot afford a luxury like a top six safety. The receiver only goes 6th overall because the top OL/DL/QB is gone and Holmgren is, as we know, likely to build a new offense in Cleveland.

Eric Berry is not 'Ed Reed'. It's a completely lazy comparison people make who haven't seen much of Berry. I've broken down tape from five Vols games this year, pain stakingly going over every play. Berry is not Ed Reed. Sure, put the ball in his hands and he's a playmaker. So is Louis Delmas, and he went in round two last year. So is Earl Thomas (who has 6 more interceptions this year than Berry, btw). The rest of Berry's game is nothing like Reed. He very very rarely wraps up his tackles. It's always low, take their ankles sort of stuff. It's lead to too many missed tackles during this season for a prospective 'top six' talent.

Aside from that, he just whiffs too many times. I always hear about his instincts - but I've seen people run past Berry when he's up to the LOS without getting even a hand on them. He also struggles against tight ends in coverage, big RB's like Ben Tate had a field day on him (and there's a lot bigger guys than Tate in the NFL) and he couldn't get close to Dexter McCluster against Ole Miss.

Put him in a good defense and he'll be fine. I have him going to Pittsburgh at #16. That would be ideal. He can develop as a man (still a little under sized and skinny) improve his tackling and general basic skills alongside an elite safety whilst also maxing out his ability with the ball in his hands.

Put him on Tampa Bay's roster and he'll disappear. Team's in the top 6 won't go near him because they have much bigger needs than a luxury like safety, and because the hype is just a little too much.

If I'm Seattle, I don't even think about taking Berry in the top ten. I'd sooner take Mike Iupati (G, Idaho) than Berry. I'd take Anthony Davis if he's there. I'd be all over Derrick Morgan. CJ Spiller and Joe Haden are better value. The two DT's are a given and I'd rather take a punt on Bradford or Mallett. Berry? I'd only consider him with our second pick - and even then it'd have to be because other guys had already gone.

My mock might not be 'reputable', but I've watched more tape than Walter (who I'm in regular contact with - he's watched EVERY NFL game this year... kind of limits the college stuff)... Lord only knows how 'Wikipedia' is a reputable source - and what's the Chatanooga Times when it's at home? I've watched the tape, everything's archived on the blog. I might not always be right, people don't have to always agree, but I put in the hours.

I see Eric Berry's as a top 10 talent but I would be very surprised if he actually gets drafted that high. No matter your opinion on him, he just doesn't match any team in the top 10's needs.

Okung wont slip past Detroit or Kansas city so forget about him. I personally think Campbell will be a better player in a few years, sorta like Jones being better than Pace.

IMO Spiller is too close in skill set to Forsett so I think we go corner or guard with Denver's pick, and get a bigger back like Dwyer in the second.

Staton,

Last year you wrote a similar piece dissing Oher when I was touting him. So far, he apprears to be the best OT taken in the last two years. Anyone who watched college football and didn't get caught up in the combine and all the petty things that were being bandied about knew he was a real player who has dominated despite his problems growing up. He overcame a ton of troubles and showed that same determination to make it on the football field excelling for his whole career. Now I don't watch college football much but I did watch Oher a few times and knew he could be a player. You seem to get fixated one one player or another good or bad and either over hype him like Crabtree last year or try to knock down other analysts analysis of a particular player like Oher. That's ok but why make it personal with the "BillT, classy as ever" shots? I never mentioned your name or your site whatsoever. Are you that sensetive that you think everything is about you? How did I know you'd bring up Michael Crabtree? It's like we've gone back in time 12 months. You've not addressed any of the points I've made, you're just harping on about last year. My points about Michael Oher were true enough so that enough NFL GM's passed on him into the 20's. Put Jason Smith at right tackle for the Ravens and he'd look world class too. Fair play to Oher for a very good first season in the NFL - but he's in a much better situation than Smith and as I remember, I never said Oher would be a 'bad' NFL right tackle, I merely said he shouldn't be a top five pick to play LT on a bad team.

I have no agenda. I don't get 'fixated' with anyone. I call it how I see it - I'll always engage people who disagree and I like to think I back up my points of view with reasoning.

I never mentioned your draft site either. In fact, I have no idea who you have the Seahawks selecting right now or where you have Berry placed. I tend to look at mocks where they are considering all teams needs not one specifically directed at the Seahawks or any other team. That's not a knock on your site either. I'll get over and read your stuff when the season is over and we really get into the options.

If I'm going to say something about you specifically, I'll name you or your site. Otherwise it's most likely got nothing to do with you.

Trading for Brandon Marshall would be a horrible Idea. Might make sense if we had an OL and a young QB to at least be hopeful about.

Eric Berry would certainly help the Hawks but, considering positional value, I don't think it would make sense at picks 5-10. If it isn't a LT, a DE or a DT then there better be a pretty darn good reason, IMO. Of course, it will be just a little clearer once our actual position in the draft is determined.

I'm fine with not getting a lot of free agent action this offseason, it's a bad way to build teams anyways. Go look at the top seeded teams in the playoffs, and check who their biggest FA acquisitions were. Young, healthy players, like Hutch and Asante Samuel. They don't go after 30+ year-olds like Ruskell did. If the Hawks could get someone like Logan Mankins it would be worth overspending, otherwise stick to short contracts and 2nd tier FAs.

Getting an explosive, young play maker like Brandon Marshall would go a long ay to make this offense alive.

Getting at OT and a LG is first. Then Marshall at WR. Then DE.

And your idea of getting a young QB just makes this rebuilidng process longer. When given a talented OL and a RB hasselbeck is elite. When you get hit as much as he has this season your timing is gone because you are inticiapting getting hit.

So we need to go OL (LT,LG,RG), WR, RB, DE,DB

There is no way a team with so many holes can afford to take Berry that high. He is clearly no carbon copy of Ed Reed. The Hawks HAVE to draft a LT and it's painfully obvious. If we could go back in time, would most teams that passed take Oher if they could? Probably, but that is a pointless conversation now. Michael Lewis sure sold me on him being the next Walter.

So many holes, we have to focus on the most critical ones. In my opinion, these are LT, RB, DE, OG and a development QB (please please something better Teel and Sencat).

Rob,

You know Rob, you're really seeing ghosts here. I mean you've not been a regular poster on here for awhile now and I'm certainly not trying to persecute you as you seem to think. I don't notice who is writing what a lot of the time and by the time I read down to the bottom of the comments, I don't remember who wrote what. If I'm directing a comment at someone specific, I always put their user ID at the top (I always have to go look it up). If I'm just responding to a comment made by someone in what I consider general conversation, I don't. I just put my two cents worth in. In this case, I had just been browsing a couple of draft sites before I read the new comments on SA so draft sites and where they had Berry was fresh in my mind.

I guess you're a little sore I didn't browse your site too but that's no reason to be so sensitive. I wanted to qualify that I was looking at draft sites being run by guys who are either paid professionals or have a track record not just reading all the private "garage" mocks out there and taking my source material from places with no credentials. Your site actually never entered the equation one way or another since I hadn't been there.

If someone makes a comment about something you said and mentions draft sites in some context, you can't automatically assume that they're talking about you and your site. Once again, I never called your site non-reputable and never thought it or implied it except maybe in your mind.

You're unforgetable Rob. If I had wanted to put a little dig in your blog, it would have been made clear to all (otherwise what would have been the point). As it was, I was talking about small time draft rags being non-reputable and you jumped up and let everyone know you thought it was your blog I was talking about.

The comment I made was directed at "the guy" who said he didn't think Berry would get drafted in the first round. It turned out to be you with a whole lot of implications that weren't really there. Notice that after that, I addressed my comments specifically to you with "Rob,". You'll know if I'm trying to start something. I certainly don't consider a disagreement over where Eric Berry will get drafted to be worth much of an argument right now.

TacomaHawk,

My fear is if we win today, we'll be 10th or 11th and all the blue chip offensive tackles, defensive ends, and the two great defensive tackles will be long gone along with the top two or three quarterbacks and Berry so we'll be looking at being at the top of the second tier of round 1 players. I'm still hoping we lose to Tennessee, Washington and Cleveland win and we're in the 5th spot where we could get one of the absolute blue chip talents available this year. Suh, McCoy, Okung, Clausen, Bradford, and a couple of others could make it a very interesting top 5 and if the Hawks were sitting there at number 5, anyone could drop to them like Curry did last year. We'll know soon where we draft.

Lars,

actually, your moves are what's gotten the Hawks in the mess they're in right now. The last thing the Hawks need is another Patrick Kerney or Mike Wahle, productive for one year of massive long-term contracts. Giving those types of deals to 30 and over players is monumentally stupid. Housh is just another example. He will be 33 when the next season starts, do you think he will get better over the next 3 seasons? Well, the Hawks will be paying him like he is. Go ask Raiders fans what it's like to have their team be $48 mil over the cap because they paid too much for crappy players in decline. Those moves simply snowball until you're in a tailspin you just can't pull out of.

As far as Brandon Marshall goes, this all started because of an article written by Mike Sando. He suggested trading Denver's pick back to them plus Branch. There are so many things wrong with this that it's hardly worth discussing. Firstly, the Hawks will likely cut Branch, so why would Denver trade ANYTHING for him? Second, look at history. Joey Galloway, a lesser WR than Marshall, fetched 2 first rounders from Dallas. Cinci's asking price for OchoStinko when he was on the market? Also 2 firsts, which Daniel Snyder wisely (and amazingly) declined. So, for BOTH our 1st round picks do you still want Marshall? Is that what you'd call "bold, smart and calculating?" Me either.

"Getting at OT and a LG is first. Then Marshall at WR. Then DE.
And your idea of getting a young QB just makes this rebuilidng process longer. When given a talented OL and a RB hasselbeck is elite."

So, you want an OT, a LG, Marshall, a DE, oh, and a RB. I'm assuming you want said tackle to be better than Locklear or Willis, and that you'd like the DE to be an upgrade over LawJack and Tapp. How are you gonna manage all of that, plus a RB with 2 1sts and a 2nd, AND still get Marshall? Hoping Denver would simply take a big sack full of trash from us? (Kerney, Branch, Tatupu and Jennings)
And to top it all off, you want to build it all around a QB who will be 35 and has been injured 2 years in a row? Are you sure you're not Al Davis in disguise?
Sorry Lars, this isn't Madden '10, this is real life, and the things you're talking about are just not realistic.

I still believe that IF Matt is allowed to stay upright and has people he can throw to and runners that strike fear in opposing Ds he can get it done for several more years. But you can say that about most QBs in an NFL uniform. I assert the loss of Mack Strong did a lot more to hurt this offense than losing Hutch.

This team needs blockers more than anything, and guys that won't fall down on first contact or wilt in anticipation of an expected hit. More guys like Forsett. I wouldn't even mind if they don't fit the size or other moronic combine criteria (see Raiders for effectiveness of combine numbers as a measurement of NFL productivity) as long as they can play effectively.

LT seems a given, as does a fast, punishing runner such as Gerhart. Monster DT, the next Kenny Easley and a WR with Jervicius size, hands and toughness with 4.2 speed ought to help.

This team is a lot closer than it looked this year. A lot of the aging vets that have giant cap numbers will be gone, freeing up big bucks, and there is no cap on paying coaching or front office talent, plus Paul Allen isn't an idiot like Dan Snyder or Al Davis, and is a better guy to play for than Jerry Jones, thus putting him in the front ranks of deep pocket owners.

With a few crafty additions and subtractions, it will make for at least some entertaining football in 2010, and give this team the dominant place in the league we all know it can have after that.

I would love to see St. Louis pass on Clausen for Suh. I don't think they are that dumb but if they do pass on him, he will fall close to where we are drafting. KC, and Tampa won't be drafting a QB and I think Holmgren gives Quinn one more shot. I also think Cleveland won't replace one Notre Dame QB with another. Washington will take him if they are drafting ahead of us but i'm not sure what the draft order is as of now.

Clausen is a pretty special player. I don't get why people are so down on him. He comes from a pro style offense, with a highly respected coach and play caller as his mentor. We have to take him if he falls to us.

I always like to help the needy learn so I will teach you. Follow the NYJ way of doing business. It's fans like you that liked ruskell in the beginning and now don't cause we arent as good as u thought.

They Jets drafted a young Lt and C 2 years ago in Ferguson and Mangold and then signed Woody and Alan Faneca and now have hte best OL in the NFL with young and vets.

And they have Braylon Edwards who would be like Marshall for the Seahaawks.

So I would actually be making the Hawks better unlike you with the signing of crapy 2nd tier FA's and low level rookies. That is what we have now.

And I actually know what I'm talking about, not in Madden. Signing Mankins, drafting a LT and RG in the draft is better than your plan.

Sorry but I'm a winner and I want a winning team something your idea wouldnt give us.

Lars,

you need to learn how to read, go back and see what I said about Logan Mankins.

I see you've pared your wishlist down a little, forgot how few draft picks the Hawks actually have? I'm sure in Madden you pulled off an awesome trade of Branch and Kerney for a 1st round pick though. I heard the Lions are in the market for a 33 year old DE with 5 sacks.

And Braylon Edwards has the 2nd worst hands in football, behind DHB. That's exactly why he's a Jet and not a Brown.

But hey, after that move fails you can always blow your remaining cap money on ANOTHER wide receiver... who needs defense, right?

"The Broncos sent Marshall for an MRI on his hamstring after he complained of the injury during Wednesday's practice. According to team sources, the test indicated that Marshall's hamstring was healthy.
The latest showdown between the head coach and the Pro Bowl receiver actually began the week before when Marshall excused himself from practice, complaining the cold weather was making it difficult for him to breathe.
Then, as the team reviewed tape of its loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, in which Marshall dropped several passes, McDaniels mentioned that certain plays had to be made. Marshall apparently felt he was being unfairly singled out for criticism."

ya, that's what I want on my team....
