Yowzers, a lot of people were pissed at my post yesterday. Good. I was pissed, I'm tired of this disfunction, I'm tired of Houshmandzadeh popping off, I'm tired of how this once great team is looking a lot more like a perennial bottom dweller than a five-time division champ. I am pissed off about it. Like I've said before, the time for rational thinking will be here soon. I'll get a jump start now.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh is a talented #2 WR, much more so if he has a true #1 drawing a double team. He lacks the speed, the hands, and by his own admission, the ability to get open in two-man coverage. If you can't get open when you're being double teamed, you will not be a number one receiver. Ever. That's what makes #1s special, that's what makes Randy Moss a hall of famer. Houshmandzadeh has simply not lived up to the promise that he made to Seattle fans, and that is why I dislike him -- though that is 100% adjustable based on his performance next year. It's taken to a different level by his attitude and apparent lack of respect for people around him (at least, relative to the respect he exhibits for himself). I defended him early on in the season, I called it "swagger." I don't think it has raised the team up and given them all confidence, so I've got to remove that label.
Deion Branch is not a talented receiver any longer. His injuries have slowed him down too much, and that was his only sincere weapon. He seems to drop more balls than he used to, and he cannot get open on almost any route, regardless of the coverage. This wouldn't be a problem if he was simply a slot receiver with no one significant behind him, but that is not the case. When we use three wide sets, Housh moves into the slot (which he should) and Branch slides out to flanker (which is absurd). A third round draft pick was spent and another (2010) traded for Deon Butler. He should have been in the game a long time ago. That is not Branch's fault, it's Knapp and Mora, but the fact is that Branch adds the least to this offense and is paid the second most. As for Branch saying, pompously, to the fans "you're either with us or you're against us," probably nothing irritated me more. We are still showing up 67,000 people strong to watch a team that is 9-23 in the last two years. We are WITH the team, Deion, just not you.
People are saying I'm being too negative. You're right, I am. It's a very negative time for the Seahawks, what do you expect? This is poorest state that the team has been in under Paul Allen's ownership, and if you want this blog to sugarcoat that and be all candy and tulips, it's not going to be. I've tried to put a positive spin on as much as I can throughout this whole abyssmal year, but we just laid three flipping ostrich eggs in three straight weeks. It's embarrassing. Here are some positive thoughts that I can come up with though:
Nate Burleson is an excellent number two receiver, and was fine as a quasi-number one. He is also the quietest and probably most explosive of any of our wide outs. He does not have the raw physical talent that Houshmandzadeh has, but he is much better in open space and represents a threat any time he touches the ball. I would not have a significant issue with a Burleson - Houshmandzadeh - Butler trio next year, but Housh needs to be inside as much as possible or we need someone better than Burleson in order to free Houshmandzadeh up in man-to-man more often. Knapp has been terrible at creating that match-up all year.
John Carlson is finally getting a chance to show the kind of playmaker he can be when he's allowed to be one. There was a period in the middle of the year where we were all, I think justifiably, a little concerned. He is who we thought he was, and that is phenomenal. John Carlson needs to be a centerpiece of this offense going forward, and I think he will be. There is no single player on this offense that gives me more hope than Carlson, especially because he has already proven that he can succeed with multiple QBs (in fact, he was arguably better with Seneca, but there are clear extenuating circumstances).
Max Unger has played very well all year, including the last two games at center. He gave up one monster sack where he just whiffed on a guy, but other than that, he's been solid. He looks like a keeper for certain, and with Sims playing pretty well too, we might be closer than we think to having at least one side of the line locked up. That line can be "fixed" with the 2010 draft and could be playing at a high level together by 2011. If the Seahawks can grab a solid guard in free agency, the process could be sped up quite a bit.
Defensively it's a lot easier. I think we have a very talented defense that is just not playing at a high level right now. All of our Linebackers are potential pro-bowlers -- Leroy Hill, Lofa Tatupu, Aaron Curry to start, but how about David Hawthorne? Kid has been a stud filling in for Lofa and making a lot of people even forget that the quarterback of our defense isn't out there. Make no mistake though, he isn't. This team immediately gets better with Lofa Tatupu out there, which is a key, key thing to remember as we crawl back into contention in the next year or so.
Josh Wilson has been excellent all year, clearly the best performing member of our secondary at this point. He's a playmaker, yes, but he has also become a solid cover corner. Trufant has had a very bad year, but that shouldn't really come as a huge shock. Tru missed all of training camp and never learned this new Tampa 2 scheme first hand. I believe he'll be back and more adequate than ever before in 2010.
Brandon Mebane. He hasn't really blown the world up like we expected, has he? That's too bad, but it's not a surprise. There is no pass rush from the outside and Colin Cole hasn't been as good as promised (but he has been very stout against the run). Mebane is still an excellent player and has huge, huge upside in this league. If we can get him a serious pass rush threat on the edge (Osi Umenyiora wants out of NYG, in case you hadn't heard), Mebane can become a dominant player in the middle. Imagine putting a true nose in next to him (if, say, 360-lb Terrence Cody falls to the second) and you've got an incredible line.

On offense we need a guard and a tackle for sure. Running back is a need, but I'm fine with Forsett as the starter and Jones as the backup for another year at least. I'd rather wait for Ingram than draft a guy like Spiller or Best who are just Forsett on steroids.
Offense has to be the #1 priority this offseason. If they can actually stay on the field, run the clock out and keep our defense rested we can retake this division. I mean we can seriously win the division next year, especially if Warner retires. He may due to the injuries he suffered this season and if the Cards fail to do anything in the playoffs.

What good does it do? For those who have to play the blame game, go ahead, get it out of your system. You and I know all you will really get out of it is that you get the satisfaction of saying - AHHHHHH..HAAAAAA....... It's YOUR fault!! Ok, go ahead if you must - (I'll wait while you do it.. ^_^)
OK - got that out of your system? Did it make you feel better? NOW WHAT?? Did it fix the team issues? Did it heal the injured players? Did it fix the issues with management? NOPE... But by golly, you got the satisfaction of say AHHHH..HAAA!!
Yeah, I am frustrated, as are many fans and booster club members. Rather than play the meaningless blame game, I say let's put our energy into supporting the rebuilding process and the changes that are about to happen.
Let's all get on the same page - and let's all say, "Ahhhh.. HAAAAAAA.... so YOU'RE the ones rebuilding our team."
GO HAWKS!!

The rest of our selections in various order are guard, pass rush, upgraded corners, and a stud safety.
Future franchise quarterback: Meaning, a quarterback who is going to take over, but is willing to be trained for a couple years without complaints. Aaron Rogers is a good example of how a system should work a quarterback toward taking over. Not like Smith, or Bradford, or countless others who came right out of college and got tossed tot he wolves. Nothing sucks worse that being "ate by the wolves and then shit off a cliff."

Thank You!
I would rather have the "negative Truth" Then the "sugarcoated Lies". I like this reporting...DONT STOP.....In a time of disfunction and adversity people want to turn their head and ignore what is going on. I dont, I want to hear what your saying cause this is the seahawks right now. This is as real as it gets.

Omar--also a good post. I sure hope you are right about Bradley. Some of his schemes have worked well--but he's just been too inconsistent. I would LOVE to see us get Osi Umenyiora at DE, but you better believe the Rams will go after him now too with Spagnuolo knowing exactly how best to utilize him.
Red Bryant better start stepping up in preseason, or he may be toast. Guy was projected to be a second round pick, now maybe we know why he fell. Im still rooting for him though.
I agree that Bradley deserves another chance, but if we can steal a good DC, maybe we could keep Bradley as assistant DC/LB coach and let him learn.
All I want now is a new OC, one who has some new ideas and doesnt play not to lose but plays to win.

People are giving Hasselbeck a free pass right now because it appears clear that no one could succeed in these circumstances. That doesn't mean people couldn't be doing better, even much better, than Hasselbeck has done with these tools. I'm not giving him a free pass, but I also haven't found it useful to look too deeply at him until the season is over.
The main reason no one is criticizing him though? He's man enough to step up and take full blame for his poor performance, and honestly, he's the only one doing that from up top with Ruskell and Mora to the bottom with Butler and Roy Lewis. When someone holds himself accountable, the media is going to do less finger pointing that direction.
written by Steve S., December 30, 2009
Burleson is a likeable guy and a decent #3 WR, but far too inconsistent to ever be anything else. Looks like the Seahawks need to start shopping for another starting WR in the offseason, along with all the other needs.
Branch, I think, can be safely cut without incurring a bad cap hit.
Carlson is a tight end. Tight end is a complementary position except for a very few dominating players, which Carlson almost certainly will never be. He's a good, solid player at a complementary position and everybody needs to just be satisfied with that. Enough with the Carlson fetish.
Unger looks promising and is just about the only keeper on the o-line.
The defense not only is not playing at a high level right now, they haven't for years. The recent collapse is merely an extension of a trend that has been going on since Ruskell arrived. If cap dollars were no object I would be sorely tempted to dump the lot of them except Curry, Wilson, and Mebane, and even those latter two I don't consider exceptional players. Trufant I would probably keep another year in the hope he can regain a little of his edge. The rest of the Charmin Brigade needs to be cycled out.
written by omar little, December 30, 2009
I'm talking about a guy who can play on the left side of the line and put left tackles to shame. We have not had this in years. Can Nick Reed be this guy? Maybe, its not unheard of for a late round pick to become a starter and a pro bowl level blayer. Jared Allen, Trent Cole and Rob Mathis were all 5th round picks and pro bowl players.
But regardless this is a talented defense that is only missing a pass rusher and possibly a safety to make it a special unit.
written by Seahawk Addicts, December 30, 2009
As for Carlson, there's a reason he is often compared to guys like Jason Witten. He is a solid tight end who represents a serious threat when matched up with a linebacker or safety. In 2008, he consistently found the open spot. He has had less opportunity to do that this year because of the O-Line backslide and idiotic OC. He is in the upper echelon of talent for TEs, and should be looked at as such. If he can better his blocking skills and land with an OC who can actually use the talents of his players rather than trying to pigeonhole them into his hasn't-worked-yet scheme, Carlson could be a key cog in the same way that Witten, Cooley, Celek and Clark have been (assuming for a second that he has a QB who can get it to him). Maybe he is overly fetishized, but he is still probably the best TE to play for the Hawks and is the only guy who seems able to make plays on this team the last two years.
written by TacomaHawk, December 30, 2009
Why does it have to be one extreme or the other with so many people? I mean, why can't folks acknowledge that even behind a great OL, Matt's skills are deteriorating and he will probably not play beyond his contract here.... and yet still acknowledge that the Hawks' OL is well below average, especially in pass pro and that he can indeed throw more than 10 yards.
And for those who seem to care SOOOO deeply about converting others to their opinions.... try not making such absurd comments and you might be more successful. While we're all on the subject of calling people out, I am specifically thinking of SSReporters... you make valid points and I'm thinking "ya, I can see that" and then you throw out some ridiculous statement like "Matt can't make an NFL throw" or "Knapp is a better playcaller than Holmgren" and you lose all credibility.
While "blame" and finger-pointing are typically negative, there is definitely some critical analysis that needs to be made about this team after a train wreck of a season. I am hoping for a GM who can do that, and then make the kind of wise decisions to right this ship.
GO HAWKS!!

Matt is hurting, and on the edge, but with a good RB and OL, could still game. But, we have neither, except that JForce is good for moving chains. Spiller and Best are just Jforce on steroids? uhh, no. Jforce could kick their asses, except that he would never be able to catch either of them. That's the difference. If either of those two pop through a hole, they are GONE. Jforce is gone for ten yards, then the left DE outruns him down.
Nick Reed as a killer rDE? huh? dude, wake up.
Housyobitch? good #3, that's it. Dion Butler#2 and a good draft pick like dez.#1
Left tackle is a big priority to say the least, duh...
O-Line? duh, we suck. Draft one or two.
One guy had a clue here. The offense needs to stay on the field and score some points! Draft A STUD or TWO O Lineman. Buy one in the off season. The WR's and RB's would seem a lot better if the O=Line would do ANYTHING ! Even JJ would be ok.
FIRE FrankenKnapp! and Jim Bore-ya too. Not to sure about the DC, I don't know enough about D to talk shit about it, other than they need a DE who can get his ass into the backfield enough to create some HAVOC. Also a big NT would be good. I'm thinking red Bryant is a BIG BUST
I would trade our two #1 picks for suh and a 2ond round pick. That dude is Reggie White reincarnated. He will dominate for a long time. Tell me he isn't going to make somebodies D good instantly.
Did I say fire the damn coaches? My dog could call better plays while licking his butt!
Did ya see Cutler win that game? Sweet!, I hate Favre egomaniac, Did you see that puke bucket run into the camera scene when Susie was trying to interview the WINNING QB, and hug and kiss the Cutler? He was thinking.."how can I get some TV facetime?" "I know!, I'll go french kiss Cutler while HE's on TV!" Ya JerK! go away loser! Why do nobodies show up to be the newest greatest rookie WR when the QB is Peyton, or Cutler, or somebody like that? Ya. I Know..
Finally, play TEEL in the final game you moron. ya think he might lose the game? huh? huh?
You stupid she-man loser whiney faced moronic polka dancer of a coach! Of course we're going to lose you idiot! The team has quit on you. I have never left at halftime since the beginning of time, but now I have! TWICE IN A ROW! Because of frankengnat and bore-ya!
If you play Teel, the team might actually play a little, to see what the kid can bring, because regarless of your sorry ass, they are interested in the future of this team. Don't even think about playing Seneclod, that dude is thicker skulled than my brick driveway.
Happy new year my brothers!

I heard Hugh talk about this on the round table too. He kept talking about all the routes that TJ could run to beat that coverage and he was right, those other routes would be more effective. But that wasn't the route TJ had. He can't just break off his assignment and go wherever he wants.

As for Deion Branch, I have no idea why KJR even let him on the radio. What a joke he is and he's the one who started this whole thing. Deion shut your mouth. I'm sure the Seahawks would have been fine without your 27 garbage-time yards per game this season and I'm certain they'll be much better off when you're gone. You're the definition of a "bust" and there is zero reason why anyone should listen to what you have to say.
Deion said "either you're with us, or you're against us." So calling out your fans, your teammates and your coaches is how you're supposed to act when you're "with us"? Deion, you're the one who's "against us" you fool. Right now it's figuratively, but thankfully after this next game you will literally be somewhere else. Good riddance you glass-bodied, ignorant, waste of resources. Don't come back.
Nate Burleson makes me proud to be a Seahawk fan. I believe that he is the key to getting TJ's mind back to where it needs to be, with his team working to get better every day.
written by Brandonc, December 30, 2009
I'm sure Hasselbeck would be the stud QB you want if the Hawks weren't robbed of their superbowl and he most likely would of won MVP of that game as well.

Did you really say that Forsett is better than Spiller or Best? I mean I like Forsett but he is not as explosive or reliable as either of those two would be. You can't coach or suddenly gain raw speed, and those two have it and Forsett doesn't. They definitly seem to be a better version of Forsett to me.
Oh, and who is to say that Reed can't be something special at DE??? If your all for giving Teel a shot at being the QB of the future, why can't you accept the possibility that Reed can be a starter also? Kinda illogical on your part but whatever...
written by omar little, December 30, 2009
His numbers over the past 3 seasons speak for themselves. He is the most productive possession reciever in the NFL over that period, he is not a number 1 guy, but he is far from being a #3.

How could Haseelbeck ever build a rapport with this physically and mentally challenged WR?
News update #83: the fans are in the clear majority "against you". You may have been lucky enough to collect 2 rings (thanks to the Pats), but you can be happy to know that you are solidly in the Top 3 on the "T.R. worst moves ever" list.
peace out DB.

1. Rams - Bradford or Clausen
2. Lions - Okung (OT, must protect Stafford)
3. Bucs - Suh (DT)
4. KC - Davis or Williams (OT, Pioli understands positional value, reached for Tyson Jackson last year vs. Curry, must protect Cassell better)
5. Browns under Holmgren - Trade down with Bills or Redskins so they can take Bradford or Clausen
6. Raiders - Dunlap, Morgan or Berry
7. Seattle - Gerald McCoy (DT) Jackpot!

diehard82,
Kampman would have to come pretty cheap, he's 30 and had knee surgery. Not sure he'd be much of an upgrade over Kerney if at all.
I love McCoy though, and if he was there when the Hawks drafted I would LOVE to see him be the pick.

Add a new safety and more importantly a productive pass rusher and this defense is pretty solid. Trufant will bounce back and Wilson will only get better. Cole and Mebane will also benefit greatly from a legit edge rush. Bradley will continue to grow into the DC that we all expected when Monte Kiffen spoke so highly of him.
On offense we need a guard and a tackle for sure. Running back is a need, but I'm fine with Forsett as the starter and Jones as the backup for another year at least. I'd rather wait for Ingram than draft a guy like Spiller or Best who are just Forsett on steroids.

I think he is still a solid possesion guy, but he scares NOBODY deep. Shit, even any of our CB's could keep up with him.
Now if you have Butler and a Dez, or even Burly for that matter, then ya, Housey is a #3.
His mouth is a lot faster than his legs are...
But I do think he has decent hands too.
He is just getting older and slower, thats all...

check it out, it is now 2010 and Sunday will be the last time you see a Seahawk take the field until late summer. stop your bitching! you are all sounding like a bunch of fucking high school girls! AKA D Branch... the time will come when a new GM is named and changes will happen, we know this. just be patient until then and stick a sock in your cock holster. there is no I in team and (we) who invest our time, emotions, ect. in the Seahawks need to stick together and weather the storm that is about to hit this off season.
the future front office needs to take appropriate precautions before training camp next year. go into camp with known reasonably aged healthy players and not over the heel injury prone ones. and you may end up with much better results...
