Even though negotiations with Aaron Curry still aren't bearing any fruit, things could be worse in Seattle.
We could've drafted Michael Crabtree.
According to this report, a league source is saying that agent Eugene Parker is telling the 49ers that his client, Crabtree, will sit out the 2009 season and re-enter the draft if the team doesn't give him what he wants.
At least Aaron Curry seems to be cordial and respectful about his proceedings, but the fact that a) they're holding out on an offer already on the table, and b) Tyson Jackson isn't close to getting things done, either, is a little disconcerting. We want Curry on that field, and we want to see him make an immediate impact on a vaunted defense.
Still, imagine if Ruskell and company had decided on Crabtree, and we'd have the situation happening in Seattle that's currently taking place in San Francisco. It would be a disruption to everything Coach Mora has worked so hard to install in these players, and would lead to exactly the kind of media frenzy you don't want surrounding your team during training camp.
On the bright side, maybe the Seahawks secondary will have one less threat to worry about twice a year from here on out. We'll have to wait and see how this debacle pans out.
