The Wife and I took the day off of work to check out the first public training camp this morning, and it was awesome. Here are my thoughts:
- Play of the Day: In the two-minute drills with the first team, Hasselbeck lobbed it up about 25 yards out to Houshmandzadeh. Housh had two guys on him, pulled up, jumped high and snagged the ball at his highest point. Good for the offense, but lets hope our secondary gets a little more physical before it's Larry Fitzgerald in a red zone offense.
- Play of the Day - Runner-up: Seneca Wallace nailing Justin Forsett deep with a well-thrown ball. Forsett had about two yards on Will Herring, but had there been safety help that ball might not be thrown. Still, this was basically the play we used to send Mo Morris on all the time to draw the Safety away as a decoy, nice to see us using Forsett in the passing game (even if it is with the second team).
- Steve Vallos: Vallos was backing Spencer up at Center, and unfortunately, not doing a great job doing it. There were at least two, maybe three poor snaps by Vallos. I do like him, but he did not look ready to start today.
- Max Unger: Unger was solid at guard and was definitely a step-up from Vallos when he was playing center with the third team. I wouldn't be shocked to see those two switch depth spots by the second week of the preseason. Unger's motor was going on pretty much every play that he was in there, and for a guy who is nearly 300 lbs, he looks fairly slim.
- Leroy Hill and TJ Duckett are the same person. They look exactly alike with helmets on, which is a complement to both. They are beasts. It would be terrifying to line up with them as a blocking assignment. Hill looked very good, Tatupu looked better.
- Justin Forsett looked very good. He caught everything thrown to him, had a few excellent cuts, and just looked tough and ready to run. I like Devin Moore, I think last year, Devin Moore and Forsett would be a contest. As good as Forsett was last year, he is looking much better right now and did things today that he wasn't even on the field for last year. Everyone seems to be getting a shot, and Forsett will be taking carries this year.
- Jamar Adams looked fantastic. I said yesterday that CJ Wallace could be a darkhorse contender for Russell's spot, but how about Jamar Adams at SS and Grant at FS? Just throwing that out there. He's probably not ready to start yet, but he had a nice interception (really a strip/interception). He sees the ball and attacks that area. We'll see more in the preseason when he can tackle, but we know from his time at Michigan that he is very capable of wrapping a guy up.
- Walter Jones is unbelievably strong. He was not on the field, but was throwing the medicine ball at the far side of the field. Most guys were getting it 10-15 feet in the air, Jones had it at least 30 feet and didn't really look like he was trying that hard.
- Cory Redding is the strongest, slimmest 292 lb man you'll ever see. He is who they thought he was.
I've got plenty more thoughts, but look for Zach's coming a bit later this afternoon. I'll get the best of the 500 pics I took up in awhile.
