The Good:
- The Offensive Line - I thought, in general, they looked very good. I didn't see a whole lot of cut blocking, which Unger said was the biggest work in progress in his post-game interview, but I think that will eventually get there. In the meantime, if the Hawks can protect Hasselbeck and live off the pass for the first four to six weeks, we should be just fine.
- Matt Hasselbeck - Hass was not holding onto the ball for long, and was generally finding his receivers / tight end. His connection with Housh is coming along famously, but he also nailed Burleson twice for 49 yards, and Carlson a ton.
- John Carlson - What can you say about him? I think we're already taking him for granted. Carlson may well end up being Hasselbeck's tallest receiver, but he's also one of the strongest and slickest when it comes to finding a way to get open. He has a nose for finding spots in zone coverage, and can beat any linebacker in the league in man coverage. Carlson's blocking has improved a great deal since last year. If he doesn't make it to the Pro Bowl this year, I will be shocked.
- Aaron Curry - Curry had a good game. We still expect more from him, of course, but he was solid and looked more like a player than a thinker for the first time. At one point, he chased a Chiefs RB down coming from the right edge and pulling him down before he could squirt out the left side. He also proved that he can and will hit hard. Nice.
- Bonus one: Josh Wilson - He started off a bit rusty, but generally did an exceptional job of sniffing out screen passes, positioning himself well in coverage, and continues to prove he is a big time blitz threat. His attitude in his little sideline interview was exceptional.
The Bad:
- Defensive front seven - Okay, they weren't bad so much as they just weren't good. We still aren't seeing much pressure being put on the quarterbacks. I think that Cassel's injury actually hurt the Seahawks as we had game planned a bit against Cassel and their passing game, but when he left the Chiefs largely resorted to the running game. The Hawks started out too slow and not quite strong enough to stop the RBs from getting to the edge.
- Cameron Morrah - He really hasn't done anything right this preseason. Joe Newton wins the spot by default, but unfortunately he is built like an inverted triangle, so I worry about him. Will Morrah be part of the first five cuts?
- Devin Moore - Justin Forsett he ain't. Moore has had a few runs where he looked good, but just a few. I love the guy, met him at a signing and he seemed like a great guy, but he isn't making the team this year and I am not certain he'll be on the practice squad either. If you can't shine against the third stringers in the worst conference in the NFL (AFC West), when can you shine?
- Edgerrin James - He was suited up early for some photo ops, but was in street clothes for the game. Mora announced that he would not play on Thursday either. James is largely a known commodity, but I don't like the unwillingness to play in the preseason. Isn't everyone fighting for a roster spot? Evidently not. I think this goes more to Mora than Edge, and really, it's not a big deal, but I still don't like it.
The Ugly:
- Field Goals - Seriously, wtf? 0 - 3? It definitely looked like the grass was wet at first, which is stinks, but still. Zero for three? Also, Coutu again proved that he can't kickoff.
- Greg Knapp's Play Calling - Not always, but some series I just sit back and go, "really?" I want this team to be trying on every play. Run up the middle, run up the middle, screen pass (all to D. Moore) is not inspired play calling, especially not after an interception from the defense. That's not good teamwork.
- The Announcing - Who gave Curt Menefee and Warren Moon their jobs? Is this some sort of work release program? These guys are atrocious. Where's Raible when you need him?
- Jeff Rowe - Sorry, cheap shot, but every time I see him I wonder why Shrek is wearing a helmet.

I think your comment on Edge is a little ridiculous. How are you giving a guy that has been here a few days crap for not playing, especially when Juice hadn't played last week and needed to play a bunch and the fact that he can get majority of the snaps next week when Juice isn't going to play. I don't like defending players for many things but, come on.
If the Seahawks can get the running going really well, they'll have the caliber of offense like the Colts and that might lead back to a deep run in the playoffs.

I liked seeing edge taking notes on the sideline with the RB (?) coach. JJ and J force looked solid.
Those 3 straight Moore plays may have been more about giving him a chance to make the team than actual game strategy.
Wasnt our front seven getting pretty consistant pressure? I wish Cassel had stayed in though because he'd have been a better test for the D.

O-line was decent, but I am still concerned about Lock. While he did not get blowed off the line this week, he still got beat around the corner on at least one play and the defender got to the quarterback. Maybe I am being unfair and quick to judge, as I guess it takes time to adjust, but I can't help but ponder - is this our future L/T?

its the preseason people! they call plays to see guys perform not necessarily according to the down and distance. it is PRESEASON. there are so many positive things to look at that complaining about play calling is hilarious to me at this point. the D isn't going to show all we have in PRESEASON so yeah maybe we are not as aggressive, again defensive play calling can be somewhat attributed to seeing certain players play, or lack there of. we have 100% more to be happy about compared to our team status this time last year

Of course Edge didn't play. While they didn't declare for sure he wouldn't beforehand, I was sure he wouldn't. Why? HE DIDN'T PRACTICE IN THE 11 ON 11 DRILLS at all this week. In other words, he hasn't actually run any of our plays even at practice speed with the actual lineup. In his 2 days of practice he: did individual and group drills, did the warmups, and watched from the sidelines and took notes. He hasn't even played in practice yet, so it was for sure too soon to have him play in a game. This coming week he will get a couple of practice days in, then he'll play against Oakland.
I agree with others that it was pretty harsh to judge Edge the way you did, and also, to be dissapointed with the D-line, as they did get quite a bit of pressure, just not a ton of sacks. They were bad early against the run, but Mora, in his post game press conference, said they were misaligned on a couple of the big run plays. It was about getting reps and setting up right, and they are still learing the plays. They just blew their alignments a bit and it cost them a couple of big gashes, other than that they stopped the run decently too. Mora said he wasn't that worried about it, as they will get that ironed out in practice. New plays, new personnel, occasional mistakes are still going to happen yet in basic things like alignment and forgetting what your assignment is.

Hey, we were a well-deserved 4-12 last year and our head coach quit. Our best corner and offensive lineman have yet to practice. Considering all that, things are going very well indeed. Starters are getting their work in, roster guys are getting their looks (and some of them are looking pretty good), the team fitness looks very good, and everybody is staying healthy. And they're winning, They may not be dominating, but they're not getting shoved around, either. That's all I expect from the preseason. The sooner it's over, the better.

But, in his defense - he didn't have many opportunities and the line didn't give him much to work with. I like the kid, alot. Not sure if he makes the PS either. I think he should though. We need a RB for practice who is not a starter. He is a good project, IMO.

I wonder why it's so hard to take a kickoff... Brandon Coutu has enough leg to kick long range field goals... doesn't he have enough leg strength to kick field goals or he doesn't have control if he put everything he got?

In the pregame radio interview Ruskell said that Edge didn't get any off season work like mini-camps or trainging camp and while in shape is not in football shape. Ruskell said that Edge didn't want to embarrass himself but he wanted to suit up and go through the warmup drills to get a feel for the way they do things.

It was the same thing with Lucas when we first got him. He was not quite in "football" shape but quickly got going.
How about Jennings? He actually looked half way decent out there last night. That should have been an INT in the endzone, but if he had a better feel for the end of the field he would have been a wideout. Hes not rolling over and dying on us just yet.

You are right about it being PRESEASON. I personally have been relatively happy about what I've seen in PRESEASON. I thought that the O-Line looked pretty good against KC, the passing game began to seriously assert itself, and JForce ran pretty well in the zone blocking scheme.
I like the way the team is coming along. The final preseason game will be a chance for some guys on the bubble to make the team, and for the O-Line to keep gelling. There won't be any major developments but it will still be fun to watch.
Edge does not need to practice after all the years that he has in the league. Save him for when it really counts.
My major concern going into the season is the DB crew. Thigpen was able to complete too many passes to too many wide open receivers.

Jennings certainly was looking better, but I still have a complaint about his almost interception. While he had every chance to catch the ball with his hands, he still missed and caught it with his face. it's still an improvement, because last year he would have fallen down at the goal line and that would have been a touchdown for the Chiefs.

Ditto about Edge....you can't judge him for not playing. The guy just got there.
Right now, Lock looks like a serviceable replacement while Walt gets healthy, but I would be really scared if he was our permanent LT. Hopefully TR will draft a LT next year in the 1st and put Lock back on the right side, where he belongs.
Biggest relief....Julius Jones looked great and JForce looks like he will be a really good complimentary back.
Biggest concern....the secondary.

I actually liked the play calling where we ran the ball. This isnt Holmgren any more, and we need to learn to run the ball. The chiefs feared the screen play, and because of it doubled forsett on the play where carlson caught the TD pass. I think this is a big deal.

I do agree !!! Very hard to stand those kind of plays in a preseason game
Maybe we just wanted to give the football away to set back our D on the field (not much playing time so far). Otherwise, I apply for the OC job right away, easy football

Apparently the LBs are in a new system that requires them to devote more to correct reads instead of just running forward. Sort of like the difference between activity and productivity. They've looked better at it ever preseaseon game so far, and Curry was assignment correct, including opting for coverage on the back when the QB was in trouble which forced a sack by a teammate instead of trying for the sack himself and giving up a major gash for a first down by the uncovered LJ the way JP would.
I would much rather see a dull but effective, assignment correct D that makes routine plays routine and rarely gives up the big ones versus the old "neglect your assignment so you can whiff on a highlight attempt and allow your open man to get 25 yards" method of the last few years.
Nice to see them dominate even while paying more attention to learning assignments than just winning. Now, about those kickers...

At the risk of questioning the armchair GM pontifications of a fellow Addict and apologies to the once-mighty and soon-to-be-mighty-again Purple and Gold, Sanchez had a pretty throwing motion while playing against the likes of WalkingDead Willingham. And Crabtree is the next Brandon Marshall Douchenozzle. The might be productive at this level, but Curry already is.
If all we see out of Curry is what we saw Saturday night (staying assignment correct to force a coverage sack, making devastating open field tackles on big backs, running down ballcarriers from the opposite side of the field to save TDs) he will pull his weight nicely. I'd have personally liked to have seen Moreno and the DB from Ohio State in a trade down, but nobody wants those high picks as it can turn you into the next Detroit with all that cap money tied up in a bunch of too-raw players.
And, it is the Freakin' PRE Season. And the entire preseason is against the worst division in football. Glad the first few games look like an extension of preseason from here. I think that we will have a great passing game and a better running game than 2007, with the D being mostly good enough to minimize the big play and stop the run cold. And if you never need to kick a field goal because you always get to the end zone, why worry? Which will mean plenty wins.

One bad game at field goals is not a worry for me, if they keep it up then I'll start to worry. But this is their free-be.
Speaking of bad and the ugly anyone watching the man that was once Orlando Pace get his butt handed to him by Denver? Maybe Denver's pass rush is better than we thought.

The good:
Housh. 5 catches for 60 yards and a TD, not bad considering he played 30 snaps.
He looked like a man against the boys last night. Put Housh, Burleson, Branch and Carlson on the field at the same time, go four wide with Butler............and how does the defense cover? You can't double them all....
I have the feeling that Matt has been working on the short game all preseason, getting the timing down and now it is there. And now that the 'Hawks have a couple of deep threats in Nate and Butler, this could be fun.
