John Boyle wrote a nice article about Curry signing and coming to camp. As I made a comment on yesterday, the length of the deal was a sticking point and it was a nice piece of work from Tim Ruskell to get Curry signed to a six year deal when most of the top draft picks were being signed to five year deals. From Ruskell:

Seahawks president Tim Ruskell said it was important to get Curry signed to a six-year deal--most rookie contracts for first round picks are five-year deals--because the team wants the linebacker to be a part of its long-term plans.

"We were adamant on the length of the deal, and that isn't the way the other deals have been going, so once that was accepted I think that was the turning point," Ruskell said. "These deals are so big, so we just wanted to get as much time as we can, have him be a Seahawk for a long time."

Billy McMullen was released to make room for Curry on the roster. Mora said that Curry had missed a lot of camp so far and had a lot of catching up to do but it's good to have the last piece of the defensive puzzle finally in camp and the Seahawks firing on all cylinders.

With the uncertainty of the future of the NFL with respect to the draft, rookie salary caps, new rules concerning acquiring free agents, and the potential of uncapped seasons ahead, it made sense to lock Curry up for as long as possible under the current system that everyone is familiar with. A team only gets so many chances at a top player like Curry and Seattle definitely plans to make him one of the centerpieces of the defense for years to come. Building the defense around him dictates that you want to make sure he'll be around for as long as possible so the six year deal was worth the extra week's wait in my opinion.

Mike Parker and Chris Sullivan along with guest writer DSA Hawker have been doing a great job of attending training camp and bringing exclusive Seahawk Addicts reports of the progress. It's great to have someone out there who is football savvy giving first hand information and telling it like it is whether good or bad. This blog is the place to be if you're craving the last word on how the Seahawks are progressing and who's got it going and who doesn't. Stay tuned.

Hasta,
