In the last couple of weeks we've heard a few different sources say that the run game won't really get going until the second half in Knapp's ZBS offense, because it takes time to break down the defense. Okay, fair enough, but how does that actually look over the course of a year? That was the question I had last night, so I took a look at the Football Outsiders quarter-by-quarter DVOA (click for explanation) of every one of Greg Knapp's offenses since he's been a coordinator. Here's what it looked like:

(Click for Bigger). As you can see, Knapp's offenses have gotten quite a bit worse over time, which is definitely a function of his crappier teams. He inherited a very solid system in San Francisco (01-03), before heading to a bizarre offense in Atlanta (04-06). Oakland (07-08) was, and is, a mess. Still, you can see that, in general, first quarter is a pretty weak one for Knapp's offenses, with second quarter fluctuating a bit. With 2004 as an exception, the third quarter tends to be Knapp's strong point. Unfortunately, things get uglier as he enters the 4th Quarter.

So, those are the raw info pieces, but relatively speaking, how does it look? Click on for one more chart, this time it's NFL Ranks.
